Devastation in Biloxi, Miss., is going to be extreme. Storm jogged to the east and spared New Orleans a direct hit, so the Miss. coast and into Mobile are paying the price.

Just because it didn't happen to New Orleans, doesn't mean it's not happening somewhere.

We have a client that is living in Biloxi, Mississippi and was supposed to have a phone conference with my boss today. I just called her, we're in California, to see if she was ok but obviously the phone lines are down as it wouldn't let me through. I'm hoping she's ok. :(

I'm pretty sure the problem is the backside swing of the storm itself. That is what's carrying the rain, so we have to wait until that "arm" of the storm swings over the area and does its thing before we can say it's over.

What that did was take the force away from the city side. Haven't heard but I'd bet Gulfport got nailed, and maybe as far east as Mobile.

Keep in mind that this storm is moving up the Mississippi valley and will continue to dump rain that will flow into the Mississippi, and hence, down into the delta.A lot of water still to come.

And i'm also pissed since the little league world series was going into extra innings and they cut it off like it was urgent when the storm was still 12+ hours away. They couldn't wait 30 minutes to finish off one of the best LL world series games ever? I had to slum and watch it in analog since ABC's HD feed went to coverage of a category 3 hurricane that was over 12 hours away.

I'm happy it wasn't near as bad as the weatherman tried to portray it.

this is true but those lands are diminishing and im sure this storm didnt help. soon enough new orleans will be sitting there exposed. a lot of soul searching is going to have to happen among people of influence of what to do with the levee/pump system, because its not like this is the last hurricane that will ever hit new orleans.

I never saw anyone on any station say this was going to happen. That it could have and didn't is no reason to pooh-pooh the very real danger that NO was in if Katrina had not veered to the east at the last minute. NO missed a worst case scenario by 50 miles, max, and people are already saying it was not a big deal and overblown. I have no doubt in my mind that these are the same people who will be first in line to complain that the alarms were not sounded loudly enough when one veers a touch the other way and levels NO.

Understood--but the immediate surge which would have caused a lot of that flooding is somewhat diminished because of the counterclockwise flow on the west side, and the brunt of the rainfall should be to the east as well. While flooding is still the primary issue with NO it looks a whole lot more optimistic to this point.Check out "Photos". There is indeed some flooding already though it's hard to tell how much.

Pic #11 says a section of the Superdome roof gave way.

Some good stuff here concerning the history behind the levees, etc. The book goes a lot more into the social issues in the south at the time than I would have expected, but it's a good read with some issues that may once again become timely for anyone who is interested.

You obviously know nothing about the city. If a storm hits the right place, yes the city can almost completely be destroyed. We're lucky that it didn't happen, but the possibility definitely exists.Is the media going to exagerate? Of course. But they aren't just making this up. OK, now I'm confused. Your original complaint was that there was too much pre-strike publicity and too many warnings because you felt those warnings were lies. But the people who agreed with you, stayed and are stranded get a "why didn't you listen to the warnings"? Sounds to me like they didn't make the warnings sound harsh enough.

First off ####### :reported:Second - Nobody had a week. Most people went to bed Friday with no worries and woke up Saturday scared ####less. We evacuated at 4pm on Saturday and that was being conservative.. Should they have left, sure they should have - but they didn't have a week.

The media didn't lie about anything - it is definitley possible that the entire city would be destroyed if the storm hit correctly.

I would say, "you had a week notice to get the hell out of there, why are you on your roof and not in another city/state?"Bottom line, I feel for the people in the path of the hurricane (that actually evacuated), I have nothing but sympathy for them. You do realize that the mandatory evacuation was not announced until SUNDAY morning, and likewise the storm was projected (I believe) to not directly hit roughly around NO? Also, alot of people simply did not have the capability to just get up and leave, as evidence by how poor a city N.O. is. Ignorance is bliss.

So for the last week the news was saying that the worst hurricane in history was coming to NO, yet people wait until they are forced to leave?Maybe it's just me, but if someone tells me my city is going to be under 20' of water i'd probably leave, even if it wasn't "mandatory".

Not a week, 24-36 hours.There's atropical depression forming in the Atlantic as we speak that could end up as another hurricane in either the Gulf or the Atlantic coast in the next 7 days. So you're saying anyone who fails to evacuate the Gulf Coast or the Atlantic seaboard at this point is just asking for it, right?

OK, now I'm confused. Your original complaint was that there was too much pre-strike publicity and too many warnings because you felt those warnings were lies. But the people who agreed with you, stayed and are stranded get a "why didn't you listen to the warnings"? Sounds to me like they didn't make the warnings sound harsh enough.

I didn't think the warnings were lies, just somewhat exagerrated by the media. That said, I would have left once the warnings came out, no need to risk my life, a category 3 is still dangerous.Listen, the hurricane sucks, I feel for anyone who evacuated and for those stuck in it.
