SLIDELL ?? Any news on Slidell? tv networks don't know anything, and I don't see anything on wdsu.com
From the blog at weather.com, which has been pretty comprehensive:Slidell, LA

http://www.wwltv.com/local/stories/WWL082905ross.

86c6840.html

Synopsis: City of Slidell: Lake waters are beginning to recede. The City has experienced major flooding from Gause Boulevard south. There is major tree and power-line damage city-wide. All major arterial roads are impassable.

http://www.acadiananow.com/apps/pbcs.dll/

article?AID=/20050830/NEWS05/50830008

Synopsis: The mayor announced that the I-10 twin span bridge connecting New Orleans with Slidell and the Gulf coast was destroyed. "The twin span is gone," Nagin said. "We have an oil tanker has run aground and is leaking oil."

http://www.nola.com/newslogs/breakingtp/

Synopsis: The storm flooded huge swaths of the city, as well as Slidell on the north shore of Lake Pontchartrain, in a process that appeared to be spreading even as night fell. Across Lake Pontchartrain and closer to the site of Katrina’s landfall, thousands of homes in Slidell flooded. From the Interstate 10 overpass at Slidell's Old Spanish Trail, the only visible structure from the dense commercial intersection was a boat bobbing on the waves.

&template=breakoutlocal.html

Synopsis: A local news channel talks about Slidell being underwater and how people are having trouble retrieving information from the area.

Just wanted to add my prayers for everyone down there. I really appreciate the updates you all are giving. Websense blocks everything here at work and all I can get is CNN and their site is about 3 hours behind.

The footage on CNN of the man (Harvey Jackson) whose house split in half and he lost his wife was heartbraking and one of the saddest things Ive ever seen....
I saw that live last night on the local Mobile, AL CBS affiliate. The 2 people on their anchor desk asked to take a commercial break to compose themselves at the end of that report.

Toenail sent me to this site.

Scroll down to Slideshow: Katrina's Force. There are 39 pictures. The fourth picture is near where our client lives. :(

GB all of these people. Houses being moved into the street, some house floating down and crashing into the highways, people swimming to safety. Such devastation. This is unreal.

I've got several folks from Slidell staying with me. They've been frustrated as well. The best source of info (how accurate??) is from the this forum on the wwltv website.
thanks!

I saw that too. One can only hope that someone will want to take that man and his two children in. Sadly though, I see that man and his two kids clinging to life as a homeless family. Even the reporter was emotionally affected. :(

Theres a few more slideshows at http://www.wwltv.com/ right underneath the picture at the top of the page...The AP slideshow link has 100 pics, the other has about 25 or so....

Your client is Grimmace?
I don't have her exact address as she gave us a PO Box as her official address. This is the street where she see her doctor which I can only assume is relatively close to her.

yikes... someone posted this on NOLA.com

CNN is reporting people jumping from the upper deck of the Superdome. Mass chaos inside with water now flooding the entire city. Gulf of Mexico can not be stopped. CNN saying there may be sixty feet of water in NOLA by six pm.
(sixty feet, is that accurate??, i only thought i was tops 8 ft below sealevel)
Typo? Maybe they meant 6 feet.
this sounds like complete garbage. the lake is flooding us to begin with and nobody is jumping from the upperdeck....sounds like geraldo at it again.
The Gulf of Mexico and the 60 feet thing is BS. However, it was a reporter inside the Superdome that called CNN with the report of someone jumping from the upper deck. I too would wait until this is confirmed. Regardless, the tensions inside the Superdome will reach a breaking point soon. They really need to get those people out of there and bus them somewhere else. Maybe they should use some of the State University system to shelter these people in a much better environment.

I saw this thing on tv where an oil platform is up against a bridge.WTF?!?!? How in the world does that happen? Why didn't it just sink in the ocean?

CNN confirmed that a man jumped from the upper deck and killed himself....he was acting normal, playing cards or backgammon or something and just jumped.

btw saw on Foxnews ten mins ago that there was 9" flooding in the French Quarter, but a) not serious damage considering other parts are under 10 ft.b) sounds strange since FQ is above sea level.{:-\

they're built to float, and have these ballasts that they flood with water to anchor them.i guess it broke off the ballast part.

It broke free from the moorings and slammed into the bridge and got stuck...I think it was a barge...

the city is a tea cup. fq is the highest, but when the rest fills, it does. :( some reports have the main flow of water just heading that way. that could be the cause.

Not all of New Orleans is below sea level.

it is a platform not in service at a shipyard in mobile that came loose. not anchored down

Even if you steal what you need to survive, the law will still come down against you. I remember this buddy of mine who stole a loaf of bread and some candlesticks during the French Revolution. He got busted and was pursued for the rest of his life by a meddling detective named Javert. despite his subsequent rise to prominence, the crimes of his past came back to haunt him.
Who is this man? What sort of devil is heTo have me caught in a trap and choose to let me go free?

It was his hour at last to put a seal on my fate

Wipe out the past and watch me clean off the slate

All it would take was a flick of his knife

Vengeance was his and he gave me back my liiiiife.....
Feh...I bet the detective who chased him was also born into despair, and choose to work hard and rise above his meager beginnings. I doubt seriously the detective was a nobleman.
You know nothing of Javert!I was born inside a jail

I was born with scum like you

I am from the gutter, too!

If you listen to the report...it basically explains this:It was a "Floatel" (floating hotel) which is used to house & feed the oil platform workers. It had been in Mobile Bay being worked on, and was ripped from it's moorings.

And here's the powerful part... It was was pushed UPSTREAM in Mobile River by the storm - not downstream by the river itself. Only thing that stopped it was the bridge.

from wwltv.com:" Residents will probably be allowed back in town in a week, with identification only, but only to get essentials and clothing. You will then be asked to leave and not come back for one month."

:o those pics are insane.

I guess I was lulled into a false sense of optimism after hearing the hurricane shifted a bit, and much of NO didn't seem to be terribly affected. But as rescue teams are going out, and more news is coming in, it's only now starting to sink in as to how terrible this has been. Three guys in my FF league live down there, NO, Mandeville and Slidell...and it's really not looking good for any of their houses...luckily they got out early enough. I dont' really wanna think about their situations, much less those of the people in miss and alabama. It's almost enough to make me want to go down there and volunteer to do whatever I can to help out this weekend, and if not that, at least donate blood and money to the red cross.

As I suspected. A good man rising from the ashes of a broken life. Shining like a beacon in the night - a star even - reaching out to a man fallen from grace.

www.nola.com has decent information, better than the national sources.
I have some issues with some of the national coverage, but I'll leave that for another day.
The funny thing about the national coverage was that at first they were hyping the doomsday scenario and were criticized. Then they spent 12 hours or so saying New Orleans was spared. Now we are back to the doosday scenario again, only this time the media doesn't seem to be grasping the severity of it. Damned if they do, damned if they don't.

Congress Vows ReliefThe U.S. Congress is poised to pass legislation to speed disaster relief to communities devastated by Hurricane Katrina. The Federal Emergency Management Agency has $2.5 billion dollars in funds available for immediate assistance, such as emergency shelters, food, and medical care. But longer-term assistance, such as help in removing wreckage, rebuilding homes, and repairing highways and federal facilities will require a major infusion of cash provided by Congress.U.S. Sen. Thad Cochran, of Mississippi, said, "This is going to be the most expensive natural disaster that's hit the United States in history." The powerful Republican chairman of the Appropriations Committee vowed quick action when the administration sends lawmakers a request for aid. -- Associated Press

Request help - Does anyone know the status of this area of Biloxi? Or can you point me to a site that shows the status of certain locations? Thanks!

Below is from a recent email from my mother. It's her brother's family that we're concerned about.

We tried calling Carl last night -- call did not go through. They live at 7508 Macon Ave. I did a mapquest search and found that it just south of I-10 (it appears their development backs up to I-10) and I heard parts (or all?) of I-10 were flooded. They appear to be about 3 - 4 miles from Biloxi Bay.

We have no idea if they evacuated ahead of time but I very much doubt they did b/c they were there for Camille and they escaped with only some shingles off the roof of their house. I have been looking at the internet throughout the day but have not heard what you reported about HUNDREDS DEAD in Biloxi. We're really concerned but have no way of knowing anything. I tried calling Bonnie today but they weren't home, although if she had any information, I'm sure she would have called.

I'll let you know as soon as we hear something.

Since no one seems to have info on the street name and where it's located in relation to the damage in Biloxi, is there a site I can go to where I can put in the street name and see where it's located in relation to the parts that were hit so hard?
Biloxi: Massive damage in east end of city. . . almost total devastation primarily south of the railroad tracks near Lee Street, Point Cadet and Casino Row. . . Beau Rivage still stands. . . Hard Rock Casino, scheduled to open in early September, suffered 50 percent damages. The signature guitar, said to be the world's largest, still stands. . . At least five casinos out of commission. . . St. Thomas the Apostlic Catholic Church, which sits on U.S. 90, is gone.SunHerald

According to a yahoo map, Pass Rd. is just a few blocks west of Lee Street and Point Cadet.
Pass Rd runs parallel to the coast, a few blocks inland.google maps

Put in Pass Rd. Biloxi, MS for a decent map of the area.

I hate to say it Mrs. BRS, but that's not a location I'd like to be in. Hope everything is OK as can be with your client.

oh dear Lord, more news is worse...being reported on foxnewsMayor of NO is saying city is devastated; no widespread power for 2 months; no school for at least 2 MONTHS !!Bourbon & Canal have gone from dry streets this am, to about 9" under water now.WWL radio is only station up & running, so they are broadcasting on ALL frequencies to relay information.local parish president says: "This is so much bigger than we ever feared, we don't know how to proceed"

I truly can't believe how bad this is getting. I'm really grieved by what's going on in and around New Orleans. My heart goes out to all that are involved. To Tipsey and all of the fbgs involved, you all will be in my prayers. I'm deeply saddened by what I'm seeing. Good luck and God bless you guys. :(
