Last night on the North Shore. This is the most awesome place on earth. Saw Ben Stiller, Laird, and Gabby Reece. Ate at the Dophin 3 times in a week. Hanalei is where I'd live if I had F U money.
Going next April. Torn on whether to stay north shore (scenery) or south shore (beaches). Would probably be looking at a vacation rental as we'll have 3 couples there + a few youngins.
@tommyGunZ and @Random how were your experiences staying in each place? If you were to do it again would you switch?

Loved the Hyatt. Unfortunately we were on the go the whole time we were in Kauai, and really didn't get to enjoy the resort like we should have. It was one of the nicest resorts we have ever stayed at. Never even made it into the pool. Definitely liked the north shore better, and it was over an hour drive from where we stayed, but our location was great for splitting the island. South shore (where we stayed), is pretty central between the Wimea Canyon and North Shore. If you stayed on the north shore, you would have 2? hour drive to the Canyon.
Went in June. Stayed at the Hyatt south shore and rented a jeep. We Kayaked the Na Pali coast (17 miles), hiked the Kalalau trail (only the first 2 miles, still stunning), hiked a few trails in Waimea Canyon, took a doors off helicopter tour of the island, dove in Queens Bath. Agree, that place is stunning.

We stayed in a condo on the Southside, swear to God it was like $800/wk 10 years ago when we went. We had to drive an hour to get to the North Shore but we went in May.
-the condo sat right on the water with big rocks along the shore, waves crashing into it all day and night, very soothing to sleep to, we never stayed up much past 9 or 10 most nights, exhausted from all the day festivities and outings.
This site can save you a lot of money. Forget the resorts unless you plan on using them, we were hardly home except to sleep. Condos have kitchens, you don't save money because groceries cost more however if you simply like to cook for yourself instead of just eating out, again a condo might serve you well.
-We went on a time share and made out like bandits, forget which one but it paid for a couple meals and one of our island tours.
Poipu is on the South side of the island but look at the weekly rates on these condos as you scroll towards the bottom. I understand it forces you to drive a little more but I think you're gonna explore the island anyways. 1 Bedroom cottage in Hanalei will run you triple, but if you have the money it is beautiful.
