KC Offense (1 Viewer)

Tried searching for the Official Chiefs Off Season thread but couldn't find it, so forgive me it if this is a honda.

Thigpen started to perform well last season (at least from a fantasy perspective) once KC began to air the ball out more often. IIRC, I remember Herm employing a more spread-oriented offense with no huddle. Correct me if I'm wrong though...

However, I'm baffled at what to expect from Cassel and the new offense for KC? Do KC fans think Haley will commit to a similar pass happy offense as in Arizona? Will Pioli have his own wrinkles to install in the offense? Any input is much appreciated.

I expect the Chiefs to pass a ton, and Cassel to be sacked the most in the league. The Chief OL is one of the worst in NFL, if not the worst. I expect Engram to have a prominent role, and do not have a good feel for how LJ/Charles will be used.

Good stuff, thanks Jeff. I notice you have Cassel ranked as a low-end QB1/high-end QB2. Personally, I consider him the riskiest QB out there right now - low floor, yet high ceiling. The one and only thing I do feel comfortable about right now is Bowe.

As a Chief fan, the Cassel signing was perplexing. Thigpen had really come on at season's end (including being the MVP of our Fantasy Bowl for my team) and suddenly he's sat on the bench again. I think this points to a different approach on the offense. It will look like New England's, meaning they'll run with LJ when they can but air it out with Cassel and Bowe if necessary. Unfortunately, as someone else pointed out, the O-line is mincemeat so don't look for much scoring. LJ will have some good games against weak defenses (especially Denver) but will be worth little in most games. Bowe will probably be the only consistent performer, more so now that Gonzo is gone.

They have Brandon Albert and Brian Waters, two players who are around pro bowl quality, dont think its as terrible as people think. Anytime you have a standout OT like Albert the rest can be meshed together with good coaching.

After the safe and sure top passers, I prefer to shoot for upside over the steady QBs that you would not want to start any given week

I agree.

A few of my random thoughts and expectations for my Chiefs this season.

I expect KC to pass quite a bit, because they'll HAVE TO. They're going to a 3-4 scheme from a 4-3 and are just starting to get players that fit. Most of who they have now may or may not transition well. They aquired Vrabel and Thomas at LB not only for leadership but to provide some tackling ability to aid the porous DL in the running game.

Cottam, 6'7" 270, will stay in to block and aid the Oline. This kind of made the Gonzo trade work. They got value for an aging QUALITY player that would not be fully utilized like in the past. Last year Cottam did show he is a capable receiver when called upon.

Engram was brought in to be the short, safety valve type receiver in 3 wide sets to make up for the loss of Gonzo in the pass patterns. Terrance Copper was also quietly signed.

LJ could be on thin ice. He's about one more barroom broad beating away from getting cut, if he doesn't anyway. His blocking skills are almost nonexistent and as I recall he complained about how he was used last year when Gailey let Thigpen go pass happy in the "spread" type offense they ran. Charles should see time in the backfield on passing downs. He's a better receiver, offers speed and CAN'T be any worse at blocking.

Thiggy did well once they let him move around and escape the rush behind the "somewhat lacking" Oline. He may get another chance this year if they don't block better.

There are two issues at work:First of all, Thigpen's mobilty made that line look better last year than it was. Opposing teams were able to put pressure on Thigpen with ease. This is one reason he had so many rushing yards in 2008.Secondly, Matt Cassel takes a ton of sacks. He holds the ball too long and is not overly mobile in the pocket. He was sacked a league high 47 times last year ... while the Chief passers were only sacked 37 times. Thigpen's mobilty will be missed this year.

Assuming LJ gets injured/in trouble again - what is the pecking order of the remaining backs? K. SMith, J. Charles, and J. Williams? Who best fits what they will try to do this year?
