Keeper/Draft setup problem (1 Viewer)

A friend started a new league last year. At last years draft we decided, without putting much thought into it, that we would do a 1-player keeper. So now our draft is coming up, and essentially you can keep one player in place of your first round pick. Draft order is set worst to first, so the first round will look something like this.

1. No keeper

2. No keeper

3. CJ2K

4. Foster

5. Rice

6. Calvin

7. Rodgers

8. Charles

9. McCoy

10. No keeper

Commish wants to do straight serpentine, but I think that clearly screws the two worst teams (neither are my team), as they get the top picks but have no shot at the top 5-7 players and then have to wait until the end of the 2nd. Should we do 1-10 again for round 2 and then serpentine after that? Or just scrap the one keeper altogether? Is there a fair way to do it? I have never done any keeper before. How do these usually go?

TIA

What we did with this (although we keep 4), is that everyone who does not wish to keep 4 can participate in a Prior Draft to the Regular Draft. They then get to pick up anyone who has not been picked as a keeper. This way it helps the lower teams come closer to parity. So they will designate those as their keepers, and then go into the Regular Draft.

I got a Keep 4, and we don't serpentine.

Last place gets 1st pick in every round. Keeps the parity, and is very important to have great keepers.

that makes sense. but with only keeping 1, it would seem to swing it too far toward the bad teams to go 1-10 every round.anyone out there do a 1 or 2 keeper?

I think a better solution is stick with serpentine, but let owners select which draft spot they get rather than force it on them, with order of selection being worst to first.

what we have done is moved the guys with no keeper (1,2,10) to the back of the first round and everyone starting at #3 moves up. So 1 would be 8, 2 would be 9, and 10 would stay 10.

We then serpentine so 10 would get 10,11 and so on.

We used to do it this way, and it is tricky. In your situation, I think you should* go Team 1,2,10,1,2,3,4,5,6, etc then serpentine.*I say "should" but what you really need to do is switch this thing to an auction-keeper right now. It's the perfect time and it's incredibly simple to do this early in a keeper league. Drafting is terrible and there will always be these fundamental issues about "what's fair". There isn't a right answer. Auction is the right answer.Make the change now and let the league thank you later.

By the way, my league has done the "select your draft spot" for years now, and it's clear that numerical order is far from people's preference. The league champ almost always ends up with pick 9 so that seems to be the least desired, and the runner up normally ends up with 8.

I've found it just makes a lot of sense to let the owners decide for themselves what is best for their team. Some may want pick 1 because they want the first choice of remaining players plus two picks at the 2/3 turn. Others may see 5 or 6 non-kept players they really like and so want the 1st/2nd round turn to be able to get two of them. If the goal is to give the worst teams the best chance to improve, then give them the choice to do what is best for them.

We keep 1 and thought about switching but we've done 1-12, no serpentine and to be honest I like it. I know where I draft and don't have to "reach" and honestly it doesn't seem to complete ruin the guys drafting late. Yes it makes it harder but we have had repeat champions etc etc.

We ended up moving the teams with no keeper to the end of the first round and doing serpentine from there. So the 7 keepers essentially became the first 7 picks. Teams 2,3,and 10 had no keeper so they ended up with picks 8,9,10 and then the first picks of the 2nd round. Seemed to work fine for everyone.
