keeper league question (1 Viewer)

My league may go to a one person keeper league this year, and I was curious how different leagues handle the process of deciding who to keep?

Do teams announce all at once? Do you roll out the announcements one at a time? Are announcements made before draft order is determined or after?

Obviously there are many ways to get this done, I am just curious what is the most popular method.

We have a 2 keeper (optional) league and they are announced about 5 minutes before the draft starts. Most teams keepers are known before then, but they are official at that time.

3 keeper league. We draw for draft position 1 week prior to our draft. Owners have 24hrs. to declare their keepers after they learn there draft spot.

We have a two player keeper league and our deadline is June 1st also. Most of the NFL trades are complete then (I forget the actual deadline), so it requires a bit of guess work to select the players. The mantra of the league is to mimick the NFL as closely as possible, hence the trade deadline has importance.

I set the date for keeper lists to be in to me a month ahead of our draft. That gives everyone a month to plan their draft strategies after knowing who is being kept. It's also right around the start of training camp, so not all questions are answered yet, which adds to the strategy.

Works well for us.

do most of you just announce everyone at once, or is there a set order to the announcments?

Also, for June 1 announcers, has anyone ever kept a player who then blew a knee during camp and was out for the season?

2 Keeper leauge,we announce a week before our draft.

We actually make cuts in April, additional cuts in June and cut to the final guys the week before.

Owners need to email me their keeper lists by the deadline, and then I post them on our league website for everyone to see. Some owners send theirs in a week or two early, some wait until 5 minutes before the deadline. Once an owner submits his list though, he can't make any changes to it. Once they are all in, I post them on the site at the same time.ETA: I have a separate email account I only use for commish-related activites. They send the lists to that email, and I don't open them up until I have everyones after the deadline. Helps avoid any potential issue of 'unfair advantage' for me seeing people's lists ahead of time.

I'm in a 12 team keep-three league. We have a bit of an odd rule that you declare the keepers a week after the Super Bowl. Yes, people have gotten bitten before (Ricky Williams). Its not the best, but its certainly unique.

Also, as for declaring keepers, we send them to the Commish. I'm not worried about his using our keepers to his advantage.

Our in season rosters are 18 players and team defenses. No restrictions on number of players per position. We keep 5 players, no more than 2 per position......your choice of any on your roster. Most keep a QB, 2 RB's and 2 WR's. Some choose to keep a TE and forgo the QB. Some keep 2 QB's and only 1 WR. All of us keep at least the minimum of 2 RB's. To risky to do otherwise. All other players must be dropped by the cut-down date of the LAST SUNDAY in JULY, midnight. This is 1 month prior to our draft, which is held the last Saturday in August. Cutting of players can be done at anytime after the season is over and during the off-season, but most wait until the last minute. The cuts/drops must be done on the league website by each individual owner.

Limiting the keepers to no more than 2 per position restricts the stronger teams from stockpiling a crapload of RB's or WR's. Some of us are pretty well stacked and must either drop these players or find a way to trade them prior to the cut-down date.

We are approaching our 6th year. In the first 2 years the cut-down date was the first Saturday in March, which is our Awards meeting. Folks wanted a longer time frame to decide who to protect/keep due to possible NFL draft ramifications and possible injuries suffered during training camps and pre-season games. Yes, during the first 2 years we had some complaints due to injuries occuring to players after they were protected.

This process of waiting until the end of July seems to work out great and we've had no complaints since the date was pushed this close to the new season. Still, anything can happen in the month between the cut-downs and our actual fantasy draft. Some guys wanted the cut-downs done on draft day, but that gives little time to prepare properly for the draft, so hence the 1 month window between cut-downs and the draft.

Hope this helps some.......

Last year we switched to a keeper deadline of just 48 hours before the auction. The league decided that having the player's most current status available was more important than having advanced knowledge of who everyone was keeping.

it sure does! Thanks for all the replies. I see advantages of doing it early and advantages of doing it on draft day. Any other thoughts?

Yes, in fact we had an even worse scenario when Ricky Williams left the Dolphins. One coach had already declared him as a a keeper. Part of the challenge of a keeper league is how to deal with such developments. The intent of a keeper league is that no coach starts at the same position and with the same needs. BTW that coach who had Ricky did not complain at all. He took the challenge and made it all the way to the championship game. He won coach of the year in our league.

While having the most current info/status available for each player is important, our secretary (me) needed a reasonable amount of time to prepare all the paperwork I generate for our league, while still managing my own draft preparation and needs. (I think) I probably go a little overboard with paperwork for our league, but I've gotten no real complaints yet. Most are happy with all I provide them. No, I do not do their pre-draft work for them, and everyone is expected to maintain their own paperwork, with regard to their team.

Yeah, I usually post keepers on the league website within an hour after deadline. What we've found is that most of the keepers are generally pretty easy to figure out beforehand and the few who aren't are usually not enough to throw off anyone's auction plans. As auction guys, we're pretty accustomed to the dynamics of player availability changing rapidly.

I run a league that keeps a total of 7 players. The deadline to make your keepers and cut the rest of your roster is one week after the superbowl (to allow for any injuries).

I like it this way because it really takes alot of strategy and forward thinking on who will be worth keeping next year vs not taking into account possible trades, free agency, roster cuts, and draft moves. You really need to know what you are doing to make good selections.

We keep 3 total players (2 franchise players and one free agent) that must be named by mid June. We then prepare for our free agent signing period which starts in early July.

Keep 3 league.

We have to choose 1 player about a month before the draft. One week before the draft we choose the other 2.

When I first found out we were doing that I thought it was dumb but I actually like it. It forces you to make a decision and gives you a clue as to what everyone else is doing.

Keep 7, contract-based league. Deadline is August 1, with the option to change one keeper after that. Final deadline is 1 week prior to the draft.

My keep 3 league declares before the 1st preseason game is played (~Aug 6th).The list is published and for the next 7 days, all owners are allowed to trade for other team's keepers, or non-kept players. At the end of the 7 day period, the keeper list locks in place. If a season ending injury does occur after the lock, that owner is allowed to seek relief and change their keeper but must pay a monetary penalty to the transaction pot.We like it b/c it gives teams a chance to see other team's keepers and make trades if they can (trades are difficult in this league & I'm trying to prime the pump). Also, I'm not saying that it would happen in our league, but we'd rather not have an owner bolt on the league right before the draft if his keepers went out for the yr.
