Keeper League Rule Question (1 Viewer)

I'm in a league thats been around for several years, and this is the first year that we are doing a keeper league. We are allowed to keep any 2 players for one year, and give up the same draft pick where they were originally drafted. There has been some debate about keepers, and I just wanted to see what the general rule has been regarding this subject. Here is the question that was posted on our message board:

"How do offseason rosters work? Is it possible that we can make trades after the Super Bowl, but before the deadline for declaring our keepers? Say, for example, I decide I want to keep Addai and Peterson. Can I trade Brady to some team with less quality keeper options for a draft pick upgrade? What about if someone has only 1 good keeper option. Could they trade that 1 great option for 2 players that would be keepers?"

The person that posted this question drafted Addai, Peterson, and Brady in the 1st, 2nd, and 4th rounds. He can only keep 2 of these players, but which ever player he doesn't keep will still have value. Should he be allowed to trade his non-keeper for draft picks AFTER the season?

EDITED TO ADD: This is what someone's response was on the message board:

"I don't think you would be able to trade Brady because once the season ends you only have 2 official players. All of your other players are technically not on your team anymore, therefore you can't trade someone like Brady."

Just trying to get an idea of what the general rule is here...

I am friends with a league that does do the trading. I don't think citing a technicality is an answer. Make a decision based on which way is more fun.My question to you is, the same round? I've been doing this stuff for 20 years and I've never seen anyone NOT promote keepers -- 2-3 rounds higher, 5 auction dollars more, keepers absorb 1st or 2nd round picks...

My keep 2 league has a rule that the end of the regular season rosters are "locked" as it comes to keepers. At that point those players will remain in your franchise's control until keeper declaration is due, for us thats in mid Aug. We encourage offseason trading and the trading of keeper quality players for draft pick improvements. Keeps the interest up during the offseason. One thing we did with keepers, which helps both competitive balance and limits the length of time you can keep a player, was to slot a keeper into a draft position 2 rounds earlier than he was originally selected. This improves balance, because the top 2 rounds of the draft every year gets returned to the draft pool, meaning that most of the studs are available, so it doesn't take years to rebound from a bad team. Also, this creates a natural limit of how long you can keep a player.

This is one of the reasons why our league does post draft term contract commitments rather than post season keeper selection.

I've done both. It does tend to keep the league a bit more competitve if you lock the rosters after the season.

Yep. My keeper leagues do this as well because it helps poor teams still have much better talent available with their earlier picks. I can see wanting to get something by trading away some of your talent if you have a great team, but it does hurt the rebuilding teams that need access to all of the available discarded talent.

You will find many ways to handle this, so in the end it's what your league prefers, but I look at it this way...

You have a 2 keeper league... and the keepers cost you draft picks...

Just based on those 2 things, I would lock the rosters... make them declare their keeper if they want to trade...

Once I declare my keeper I can trade him... for draft picks or a draft pick and someone elses "declared" keeper...

If you allow the full roster to be traded, then declare 2 keepers... you kinda defeat the purpose of 2 keepers and the cost of draft picks... if I finished the season with a strong roster... I could end up with 2 keepers and a bunch of draft picks for other players and deplete the draft pool... Why not just play dynasty at that point...

In my keeper league, we lock rosters til the day of the draft and don't permit the trading of picks for players. Perhaps we should consider offseason trades but when we originally allowed picks for players it devolved into poor teams "renting" their marquee players for picks. As we limit a player's keeper eligibility to 2 years and alternate a between 2 players and 1 player as a keeper each year. I think that if you can find a way to keep all teams competitive and still trade keepers great, if not just do the keepers...
