Keeper Leagues. timing of deadlines/draft order (1 Viewer)

One of my keeper leagues is set up where you can keep up to 4 players, 2 offense, 2 IDP and surrender the pick of where you took the player the previous season.

We usually have a deadline to submit our keepers around right now. There are a few owners complaining that is too early. And other owners complaining that they want to know the draft order at least 2-3 weeks before the draft. What do other folks do out there? We usually pull the draft order (randomly) once all the franchise players are revealed. What say you?

Yeah it's certainly not a direct translation. I commish this league and if for some reason we ever decided to randomize draft order I would likely do so on August 8th (when keepers are due). This provides plenty of time or folks to strategize around their picks. That said, I like the simplicity of using reverse of finish order.

I commish this league and if for some reason we ever decided to randomize draft order I would likely do so on August 8th (when keepers are due). This provides plenty of time or folks to strategize around their picks.
It definitely gives plenty of time to strategize, but there are other folks who want to push it until 1 week before the draft.
 
Our keepers are due a week before the draft which is week 3 of preseason. I also have a provision that if one of your keepers is injured, suspended etc before the draft that you can remove him from your keeper list. You don't get another keeper but you're not stuck with a guy on IR all year.

Our draft order is based on previous standings as well so that doesn't help you much.

 
My league keeps up to four. If you keep 1 you first pick in round 2. If you keep four your first pick will be round 5. Draft order is based on last years finish. Keepers are anounced right before the draft. Nothing like the fog of war to make things a little more exciting.

 
I commish a Keep 3 league.

Draft order of the NON-playoff teams is determined on the date of the NFL Draft in April

(gives us something to trash talk about in the spring).

We announce our keepers 1 week before the draft date (which we try to schedule as close

to the beginning of the NFL regular season as possible).

What would be the argument for not determining the draft order early? Just curious. I think most people want to know earlier.
 
I commish a keep 3 league and this is what we do:

Aug 8th - submit 3 keepers (this date may move every yr, but coincides with the day of the Hall of Fame game)

Aug 9th - announce all keepers to the league

Aug 9th thru Aug 15 - 1 week trade window where owners can wheel, deal, make changes ($1 each)

end of Aug 15th - all keepers lock until the draft (which is usually a couple of days before the opening night Thurs game)

This way:

1-I get my owners to submit their keepers early, (without them playing "games")

2-They get to see who wasn't kept, look at the draft order, and maybe make a deal to either change a keeper or move up to possibly draft someone

3-Between Aug 15th and the draft date, this gives them enough time to plan.

It is not necessarily that they want the draft order determined late, but those people are saying that the importance of having the keeper deadline late outweighs the importance of having the draft order early.
 
Why not determine your draft order first? I would think that has some input as to what people keep. For instance, if one team had a stud for offensive keeper 1 but was weary on the 2nd offensive keeper, knowing if they will pick first or last in the first round could weigh heavily on the selection.

 
I commish 1 league where we declare 3 keepers, 2 days before the draft and have that 2 weeks before the season starts. We also have to give up draft picks for a player, so we know the draft order in advance. Our league the first pick goes to the winner of the consolation bracket from last year, or 5th place.

So your draft order is determined before the keepers are announced. I'm not sure I like that idea.
Depends on the amount of keepers you have I guess. We have 7 so our order is in reverse finish of prior year standings.
 
Our draft order is randomly drawn at halftime of the Super Bowl

We are allowed to keep 2 players

The keeper players are due the Monday before a Saturday draft. Trading can begin the day after keepers are declared. Guy can only trade their keepers and draft picks.

 
I'm in a 9 man dynasty/keeper league and our draft was June 6th.. We usually determine draft order few weeks after our superbowl.

 
In my keeper league the rules state that the keeper deadline is approx. 7-10 days prior to the draft.

Our draft order is also pre-determined based on prior year results.

For 2010 for example Keeper deadline = Aug 30 and Draft Sep 6.

I've played in lgs where keepers are due July 31 to early Aug and every couple yrs something happens to a keeper during the 3-4 weeks until the draft /auction. In that particular league there was no provision to alter or change keepers and the team was in big trouble right out of the gate. Makes for unhappy Franchise!

 
Two keeper leagues, both use reverse order draft, both allow us to keep 6 or 7 players: In one, keepers are declared late July and the draft is (this year) August 21. In the other, we declare keepers about 10 days before the opening day, and draft the weekend before. Both are open for trades (but no FA selections) between keeper lists and the draft.

With the first you get some action and focus far earlier in the summer. I like that. With the later league, you get to know who is hurt and depth charts/camp battles before you have to declare. I like that. :lmao: I think whatever your league prefers will work, as long as there are several days between naming keepers (and setting draft order) and drafting. I don't think trying to pressure guys into instant decisions makes for good choices - and that gives them a reason to blame the league and rules for bad choices.

 
For those of you who base their draft order on inverse of last year's standings...do you do a serpentine draft or a straight 1-12 draft? What's the reasoning behind that?

Ours is a straight draft for rounds 1 and 2 and serpentine afterward.When we changed from redraft to keeper (circa 2005) I communicated a lot with the staff here on how to make the conversion. Bill Davies was awesome and helped me out a ton. Here is an excerpt from our email exchange on draft order for keeper leagues.
We have another theory we feel good about, although not nearly as brilliant as the square root solution. You are correct in expressing your concern about the relationship between prior year's finish, keepers and draft order. We have tried to address it with the following: In any form of keeper league, draft order ought to be determined, at least in part, based on prior year's finish. However, it's not that simple. We suggest a straight draft order (like the NFL) for as many rounds as you have players kept and then going with a serpentine order after that. AS AN EXAMPLE: 12 team league. Roster size is 16 players/team. Standard 2 player keeper league. 1st place team is Team 1, Last place team is Team 12 and everyone falls into place. Keep 2 league. 12 teams. We have to submit our protected list on 8/15. Draft is 8/29. I think it's the right balance between allowing owners to wait a bit into training camp before making a decision on who to protect and giving enough time for draft prep based on who is protected.

We had out draft order out since January to promote trades (teams can trade draft picks). Draft order is set by 2009 records for first two rounds. Worst team gets first pick of first round and last pick of second round. Remaining rounds are done by random draw. So, if Team A gets 1st pick of round 3, he gets last pick of round 4. Then there is a draw for rounds 5 and 6 and so on. Been doing it the same way for 10 years.

Friday august 20th keepers are due. email starts with last years champ and goes all day until last years worst team.

Draft is the 28th.

If I keep Chris Johnson and he blows his knee out the week b/w keepers and draft, I can cut him, but cannot keep anyone else in his place.

We've never had any issues with this format.

The large keeper/16tm/idp league I head up we always have the keeper lock date to be the Weds before the Hall of Fame game and the draft is the day after the Hall of Fame game, so everyone knows what the dates are going to be. This gives the teams a chance to look through the pool of who is not being kept over that weekend. Early drafting makes preseason relevant to player moves in August, keeps it interesting.
