I no longer live in Charlotte, but supposedly Greg Cosell was on the local radio in CLT this morning absolutely raving about Benjamin.

Cosell has been a rather trusted evaluator...

He was on last week and then again today. He believes he's a better "route runner" than Evans, just slower. Believes he's as good or better in every measurable except speed. However, he also acknowledges that "router runner" as a measurable is laughable given every single WR coming into the NFL has to learn how to run NFL routes, so he doesn't really see the point in even talking about it. When he comes on the radio, it's my favorite 10ish minutes of the day. The guy is unreal and gives some pretty good insight outside the "draft talking points" that really mean nothing.

Cosell is my favorite evaluator but this is one evaluation I don't agree with. His hands aren't nearly as good as Evans.

He needs to work on his focus with respect to "routine" plays. In the air and on difficult catches, I wouldn't take anyone else out of this class...including Evans. He'll make an unbelievable catch and exhibit unreal body control in the air then drop a ball where he's all by himself as it hits him in the numbers.

Listening to the naysayers, he won't be able to get much separation, so maybe he won't have to worry about dropping many routine, uncontested balls.

Either way, the spaces get tighter moving to the NFL for all WRs and for all of the things Benjamin may lack, he can go get a ball in (or above) traffic.

I laugh, along with Cosell, about that the "separation" shtick. Dude is 6 foot 5. Out of the gate he has separation. I'm interesting in ctsu's breakdown on what he sees on tape when it comes to Benjiman. I don't watch tape like Cosell and apparently ctsu. I just see the games on TV. All I know is Ricky wanted him, Cosell is on board. I guess time will tell.

I don't watch any college football and look only at the break downs. Because of that I don't get caught up in emotion over team wins and certain plays (like Benjamin's winning TD). I don't completely ignore those things but I look mainly at technique and how I think a player's skills will translate.

There are skills that Benjamin possesses that leave the door open for him to become a good WR but I've backed off of developmental WR's in recent years. As a 2nd round rookie pick, sure, roll the dice, but he's not a 1st round pick and there are players I prefer in the early 2nd as well.

Disagree. How do you compare Baldwin to Benjamin? The dude is WAY more talented than Baldwin on all sorts of levels. He may not produce RIGHT away. But once the chemistry is developed, the Cam/Benjamin connect is one QB/WR combinations the NFL is going to enjoy for years to come. Cam has needed that WR1 since he was drafted. Steve Smith did him well and all, but a 6'5" 230-240 pound WR is exactly what they needed since he was drafted. The past few months I have been praying Carolina would draft Benjamin, and it happened. So we will see!

Another tweener WR/TE and I don't recall ever seeing one amount to anything fantasy wise as a WR. Some will bring up Colston, but he really never was TE size. Now if they move him to TE my ears may perk up.

He might have TE size, but I don't believe the Panthers intend to play him there.

As a Panthers fan, I'm hoping in dead wrong. I'm not sold on Benjamin, but he is huge and Proehl really, really wanted him from all accounts.

The bigger concerns for me are low football IQ/intelligence and his former coaches saying he was a slow learner too. I realize he doesn't need to know a full route tree to run down and catch it, but... Gotta know enough to get on the field.

Benjamin has almost 30 lbs. on Bryant (some would to his detriment) but Bryant outperformed him on every metric at the combine by a good margin.

Despite the weight advantage, Benjamin did 13 bench reps to Bryant's 16.

I fell in love when I saw him burn Chris Davis for the winning score in the title game. Who cares about the combine, KB had hops for that ball at the most important time in his career.

Thats all I needed to see to be sold on him.

I just went back and watched some draft breakdowns of his from last season. It's very up and down.

Pros:

- big body

- good long speed for such a big guy

- has some decent deep route moves

- good blocker

- flaws can corrected

- sits down nicely in zone holes

Cons:

- poor separation

- slowish burst off the line and out of hard breaks

- short to intermediate routes need work

- struggles to make catches when he has to bend or rotate his torso

- gives up on plays/tires out towards the end of the game

- doesn't attack the ball

- loses track of defenders

I don't think Benjamin can be a true number 1. He got a lot of single coverage in college, a luxury he won't have with Carolina. He didn't put in enough effort coming back for passes nor did have the nastiness needed to fight for contested balls. He also tended to lose track of the safeties. All this really adds up against him since his specialty is deep routes. He will catch some but he may start seeing ghosts after he takes a few big hits from safeties.

Another major problem is him either getting tired or just giving up on plays. His blocking starts slip late in games and there was a play against Florida where his QB starts to get pressure and scramble. Benjamin is running an inside curl and instead of running across the field to provide at least an option he stops. Standing straight up, arms loosing hanging to his sides and just watching the play. With Cam Newton as his new QB he can't ever do that.

IF he chooses to put in the extensive hard work and adapts a more aggressive mindset he could become a true number 1 and a fantasy stud. His body gives him such an advantage in every route. A well thrown ball on a well ran slant is undefendable regardless of how much burst or separation he has coming out of it. Plus, he already has a knack for finding soft spots in zones.

I think he would be an amazing TE and if he wasn't part of the worst WR corps in the NFL I think he would be moved to TE.

In the end, Benjamin has to large of a hill to climb to get to fantasy gold.

I love the landing spot. Cam should attract plenty of attention from the defense. My main concern is that besides Benjamin who are your weapons? Double cover Benjamin and then Cam beats you? DeAngelo isn't a world beater, I'll let him tear me for 100 yards if it means limited Benjamin (assuming Benjamin does become a threat).

Like the question to me, is whether or not Benjamin can beat double coverage. Even in his division, you've got a great secondary in New Orleans, Atlanta is suspect, Tampa Bay should be well coached. If they run a Cover 2, there are various ways to get Benjamin open assuming he can beat his matchup.

Want to see what this guy can do against scrubs in pre-season. I'm afraid he might struggle as a rookie against saavy veterans. But he should be able to beat some veterans on size alone. He should shine late in the season after most teams get snake bitten. I would draft and hope I could plug him in later in the season for a Touchdown grab or two.
