Kenny Irons (1 Viewer)

I think Kenny Irons is very underrated from a dynasty perspective due to the fact that he will not give you immediate returns (barring an injury to Rudi). However, I think he will have the second best fantasy career of any RB drafted this year because:

1. Rudi won't be around as long as you think. He only has 2 years left on his contract and he has had a lot of carries the last few years. This is his 7th season in the NFL. The Bengals won't bring him back, IMO.

2. Chris Perry isn't a long term threat. He can't stay healthy and the Bengals don't love his rehab effort.

3. Kenny Irons has looked fantastic in both the rookie camps and early in training camp. He has a burst that Rudi does not and in his prime will likely put up even better numbers than Rudi (Why? Rudi did not have a single 25 yard run last year. )

4. The Bengals offense will be one of the league's best for a looooong time. Carson Palmer is signed through 2014 and is just 26. Chad Johnson is signed through 2011. Chris Henry, if he can get his life together, will be a very dangerous long term #2. LT Levi Jones just signed a huge long term contract and the Bengals are decently well stocked with good young OL (Whitworth, Andrews, Ghiachuc).

Overall, I see Kenny Irons as a guy who in 2 years will be in a situation as good as or better than Joseph Addai. He will be the man at RB in what very well could be the NFL's best offense. If you can deal with 2 seasons of him getting mediocre numbers (barring injury), I think there is a very good chance that he will end up being a good #1 Fantasy RB. And judging by where he is going in both rookie and other dynasty drafts, that would make him a HUGE steal.

I have him as the RB3 in this class. I think he's pretty underrated by the masses.
I like Jackson a tad more and a healthy Bush more as well... I have Irons as the clear #5.

I guess this is what I don't understand. This year? Ok, maybe. But, what is Jackson's future on a Green Bay offense starring Aaron Rodgers and Greg Jennings? And the Raiders, even assuming that Russell isn't a bust, have a long ways to go. They don't have a great OL, a top 5 QB, a top 5 WR and a top 15 WR. The Bengals have one of the best offenses in the league and most of the group is young and signed longterm. And their current starting RB (a 4th rounder who is not spectacularly talented and can't catch) is annualy a lock for 1250 yards and 12 TDs. I'd argue that Irons is on a much better offense and one that currently has a top 10 back. GB and Oakland RBs are basically worthless. A starting RB for the Bengals is a surefire #1 or 2 RB, can the same be said for Oakland and Green Bay?So what is it then? Do people see some huge talent gap? Irons was a mid second round pick. And you really can't say it was a reach type pick (like GB's selection of Jackson, arguably) because the Bengals had bigger needs elsewhere and just went best player available.

Its opportunity. A dollar now is worth more then a dollar two years from now when who knows what the NFL will look like. Rudi's the man in Cinnci right now and Cinnci has a shown its willing to draft RB's high as backups. Perry had injuries to set him back but even when healthy they seemed more then content to use him as a third down back. Jackson especially has the chance to help fantasy teams for well before Irons would get starter touches. Lots of talented players waste away careers behind other guys, and whether Irons is better or not isn’t a grantee he’ll be the #1 back in Cinnci anytime soon. Based on his draft spot he has value but he has more risk and a longer wait for payoff at the moment then Jackson and should be behind him.

I'm not as high on Irons as others. He is not in a great situation to start anytime soon. I think he was drafted more because of Perry always being hurt than to be a future starter. I watch him play and don't see anything special about him. He has some speed and elusiveness, but I am concerned with his build being big enough to take the pounding, and to be an inside runner. He is not a great receiver, although he has the athletic ability to improve there. He gets manhandled picking up blitzes. I see a RBBC player at best.

Irons is one player that the staff disagrees on in the rookie rankings. Three have him in the top 15 (10, 12, 15), and three, including me, have him lower (22, 23, 25).

 I have irons #5 (after Bush, before Henry)

Just had a rookie FA draft, and I think Irons, while I don't see him being a spectacular pro, at least represents good value. I think because of his size and situation people are letting him fall pretty far. I got him at 6.1. Even if hhe doesn't pan out that's a pretty good bet.

Originally I was down on Irons because he had a really underwhelming senior year, but when I went back and looked at his ypc, it was still really good, well above 4.5. Still, it's disturbing that his cpg went way down his senior year.
