Kerry Rhodes Semi-Slow Start (1 Viewer)

Islander

Rhodes had 4-1 in week #1 with one pass defended, and 5-1 in week #2. Nothing else. Not particularly bad, but based on FBG scoring, this is 8.25 pts per week. This compares to his 2006 average of 12.2 pts per week and his 2005 average of 10.5 pts per game. Norton and Bloom projected roughly 13 pts per game this year. I have not seen the Jets this year. Is there anything unexpected in the defense after two games that I should be aware of or it's just that Rhodes had two slightly below average games and there is nothing to worry about for his future production?

I'm not too concerned yet. Rhodes has been the second best tackler up the middle in both games. Kenyon Coleman (Week 1) and the corners have been very active tacklers, though, which has hurt some of the opportunity. I've got the BAL-NYJ game on the DVR to review; if something stands out, I'll post.

I traded for him this past week. Gave a top LB. I was disappointed in his performance. I hope that changes, but i am starting to think you never know with DB's.

I watched most of the game and he seemed to be around the ball often, just not in on the play enough. Made a couple of nice stops at the LOS though. He was creeping up a little more this week than last and was sent on a couple QB hunts. Personally, I think he is just starting to warm up. Plus it seems the Jets D is going to be on the field quite a bit this year. I wouldn't panic yet. Adrian Wilson started off slow this year also. There isn't much reason to think these two FF superstars won't come around.

I had him on my team last year and certainly appreciate his talent but understand what you're saying

His stats so far are typical for DB's and definitely Rhodes. Last yr for me, he came up huge 3-5 games, but he probably had 3-5 games that were like, was KRhodes playing? He's kind of like the Chambers of IDP's. I have a feeling with the type of team they have his numbers should be similar this year.

I have no doubt he ends up a Top 10 DB, but I also have no doubt he posts as many duds as he does games with like 8 tkl, 2 FF, 1 INT. Just seems to be his/Jets game

With that in mind, Clemmens or Pennington starting this season could influence that

Erik Coleman, the other starting safety, was inactive this week. That had to have had an impact on the game plan for Rhodes.

Will it be back to bad when Coleman comes back? Anyone know what the injury is or how long Coleman might be out? I thought Rhodes was an SS when I drafted him, but is he really an FS?

 Hindsight is 20/20 but I suspect E Coleman out had a lot to do with it. I should have foreseen this.I think Rhodes is a must-start for as long as Coleman is out because the Jets use Rhodes differently. Once Coleman is healthy, I think Rhodes is very iffy again.

I hate Rhodes. We need an IDP venting thread. Amen.
this is the first week i benched himgd it
me too
me three  I should still win (:gowittengo:, Oh yeah, & Crowell to, tonight) but it would have been a GOOD win if Rhodes had been in.
not me! :moneybag:
Back at ya....Never bench your studs! (I'll admit, I was ready to click the change at 12:30 Sunday, but didn't)....

Rhodes had a pro bowl type of year last year playing along side Coleman. I don't think Coleman has much to do with it, I think it is much more about the game plan. That, and the fact that even studs can have some slumps in their numbers. I've been sticking with him in the two leagues that I own him in, and will continue to start him on a weekly basis. He has a lot of big play ability, but no player can do it for 16 weeks, every week.

Rhodes is a great player, no doubt, but roles do change. The talk has been that he's playing further back from the LOS, but played closer this past week. To me that screams FS or SS. So I'm just trying to get some clarification as to his role this year. I've seen sources list Coleman as an FS and as an SS, same with Rhodes. What's the truth? Or is it like the 'good' old days with Herm where they're interchangeable?

Mangini is always changing up his schemes. Sometimes the FS and SS are interchangable, in other game plans, I've seen Rhodes look more like a FS than SS and vice-versa. When Jacobs was in the backfield, Rhodes cheated up in run support. When it was Ward, he backed off a bit. The Jets have seen a lot of spread formations this year, and sometimes that dictates where he lines up. The Giants don't show many (if any) 4 wide sets. I'd venture to say that Rhodes is a better play against teams that don't spread the field often. Then he plays up, gets more blitzes and has better tackle numbers. In short, I see inconsistant numbers for him, but the avg points per week will be there when all is said and done.

True, but Rhodes' worst 4-game stretch in 2006 was weeks #14-17 with 28.75 pts. In 2007 weeks #1-4 he had 31.25 pts. Rhodes did not have a "bad" stretch like 31.25 pts in 4 games until the very end of 2006. So when a stud has his worst four games at the end of a season, and then the first four games of the following season are equally "disappointing", that raises my eyebrows. Obviously it helps gain insight if we could see all games. But for those that can't, all we have to go by is the numbers. I can only conclude that something has changed in the defensive scheme to make Rhodes less worthy of a start, unless we can make the argument that 8 sub-par games in a row is just a fluke (actually 9 because week #13 last year was not so good either). Eight or nine in a row was getting too big for my taste and not fluke territory anymore.

Well, I think that today's numbers helped my argument some. Rhodes is, and will be a solid FF scorer this year, not every week, but end of the season numbers should land him in the top ten. From a week to week standpoint, it's about matchups and the defensive game plan. Philly doesn't spread the field much. That usually means Rhodes will have better numbers. He becomes more of a focal point in the game plan, gets more blitz calls, can free lance and jump routes more often. Against spead formations, he's going to stay at home more often.

Based on that logic, Rhodes is not a good start. Norton has Rhodes DB2 for the week#7 matchup against the Bengals. Not sure I agree with that.

Cincy, spread offense, bad week for Rhodes, good week for Jets' CB's. This is clearly a more than a trend now.... also of note was Elan playing for Coleman. He played OK, but made some big mistakes. I'd expect to see Coleman start next week.
