Had one of those shocking epiphany moments when I was out and noticed all the ketchup bottles stayed out on the tables all day.

Then i read the bottle and noticed it says it does not require refrigeration

:mindblown:

Always thought it was one of those refrigerate after opening type of things for some reason

I'm still keeping mine in the fridge!

They leave 'em out on the tables all day at restaurants.

edit- but I'm still keeping mine in the fridge, too :hifive:

Fridge. Finally got everyone in the house trained to put it away there.

Instead of leaving it on the table, the counter, the kitchen island. Not opening up that can of worms again.

There is so much sodium & acid in ketchup that bacteria won't grow in it. However, it stays fresher longer in fridge.

If you go through condiments pretty quickly I wouldn't worry about keeping them in the fridge.

I prefer my condiments warm if they dont require being kept cold.

My MIL has an annoying habit of refrigerating nearly everything. She even keept vinegar in the fridge. I buy a lot of fruit and I cant stand that she puts it in there too. I cant stand cold fruit and I always eat it before it gets bad.

So far she stopped with the fruit.

Last week I bought myself my own bottle of hot sauce and kept it in my shelf space. She put it in the fridge sp rather than say anything this time I just continued to movr it back to thr cabinet. This went on 2-3 times a day until she stopped.

Yesterday I bpught a summer sausage from Aldi. I told her twice that it does not require refridgeration until the packaging is open.

She said ok.

I woke up this morning and it is in the fridge. Guess we have to do this passive aggressive dance again.

Not to hijack, but you live with you MIL too?

Since I use catsup once every six months, I keep it in the fridge. I really don't like the stuff, except as an ingrediant in other things....

For a freeloader, you are kind of a PIA.

I pay a third of the rent, among other things.

My girl and I were going to look for a place 2 months ago but they thought it would be better if we stayed. I took the savings and started a business, which when it takes off they wont have to worry about anything.

A. Restaurants go through it quickly enough that leaving it out isn't an issue. But if this bothers you, don't bother watching the ketchup bottle cannibalization that goes on at the end of the night.

B. Cold ketchup sucks.

Ah. My situation is different. My MIL is freeloading with us. Wish she paid a third of the mortgage, among other things.

Does she help around the house?

Freeloader isnt a nice or accurate term unless a person does nothing within their means to help.

Help around the house? No. Here's just a glimpse of what she is like. She lives with us M-F. She's the only coffee drinker in the house. Every morning she makes a pot, drinks some, leaves for the day leaving the pot dirty. She rinses it out the next day and repeats. The only time it gets cleaned is on the weekends when my wife does dishes or puts it in the dishwasher. Now, that's not the worst I have to deal with, but that's just coffee. She doesn't contribute financially, doesn't clean or do chores.

The whole situation is a long story, but freeloader is 100% accurate.

In that case you are right.

She should at least be doing the household chores during the day. Do you have children that she helps with at all? Im all ears if you want to vent the story.

She works during the day so she is not around. My kids are 11, 13, and 17 so other than rides for the younger two, they don't need a lot of babysitting.

My in-laws "retired" and built a house in the boon docks, except, oops, she can't afford to stop working. She asked to live with us during the week for 4 months until she found something closer to their new house. Fast forward 22 months and she is still here. She is generally a selfish and doesn't show a lot of respect for other people. Plus, she hasn't uttered one word of thanks since moving in. We're at the breaking point so after hinting a few months ago she needed to find a new situation, my wife finally had the conversation with her that she needed to find something else. My MIL professed she couldn't afford to do anything else. The very next Monday she came back, and I mean the very next without exageration, she showed up with a brand new leased 2015 Rav4. My wife drives an '06 Sienna and I drive a '99 Camry. Needless to say I'm at the end of my patience with her.

Editing to add, sorry for the hijack. If she's not out by April 1 I will be starting my own thread on this ordeal. I'm optimistic it is almost over.

To bring this back on topic, a cousin of my MIL's used to drive around with a bottle of ketchup in his glovebox. They're from the UP, though that probably goes without saying for someone who keeps ketchup in their glove box.

I offered rent since I moved here in september. They said no and to save.

About 2 months ago the MIL's temp job ended so I insisted on giving them money since then.

Since I have been here I pay for the things I use. As well as renovating the kitchen among other fix it jobs all over the house. I do any chores I can find or have been asked to do from day one.

I hope I dont see that thread come april and it all works out.

What does "UP" mean?
Upper Peninsula, as in Michigan. They are a different breed up there.
I learned my factoid for the day.

How are they different up there?

Glorified Canadians?
They take pride in their simpleness I think. They have a ton of nick-nacks around the house like a "Upper China Holder" on the wall which holds a stack of paper plates. They put ketchup on everything. My wife moved out of the UP when she was 2 or so, but I still laugh at some of the stuff she puts ketchup on. They rave about these things called "pasties" that is meat and potatoes wrapped up in a calzone type crust, except it is completely devoid of seasoning or flavor. My MIL has to bring back a case full every trip back home though.

Sweet hairy Moses

 My wife found it absolutely mind-blowing that my parents always refrigerate the ketchup. I really don't care one way or the other.... food I typically eat with ketchup is fast food so I just get the packets there. If it's home-cooked food, chances are I don't need it.

Bull

What do you mean she brings a case? Companies make these and they still have no flavor?

What do the companies call them? Nobody in UP knows yet that pasties are what cover up breasts in lame strip clubs?

This is fascinating stuff

British foodNow it all makes sense
From the link:The Upper Peninsula of Michigan.

In some areas, pasties are a significant tourist attraction, including an annual Pasty Fest in Calumet, Michigan in late June. Pasties in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan have a particularly unusual history. Many ethnic groups adopted the pasty for use in the Copper Country copper mines. The pasty has become strongly associated with all cultures in this area, and in the similar Iron Range in northern Minnesota.
