Kraut+Mustard+Onion is the correct answer

unless you're talking about the abomination known as a fat free dog in which case ketchup may be needed to get that thing down

The great thing about a hot dog is the many different ways it can be served.

I say to hell to people who try to bully the rest of society into thinking there is only one acceptable way to eat them and miss out on the heaven that is hot dogs served a million different ways.

I haven't put ketchup on a hot dog since I was a kid but the idea doesn't gross me out.   Seeing someone put ketchup on eggs bothers me.

I'm actually for people putting the wrong ingredients on their food. More of the right stuff left for me.

Proper way to eat a hot dog:

Sub a giant bratwurst for the hot dog

Throw away the bun

Add horseradish mustard, sauerkraut, onions, and relish

Repeat.

Great colleague of mine is a die hard Chicagoan.  Adamant that you never put ketchup on a dog. So we had a bet. If he lost he had to walk up to the best dog place in the city (forgot which one) and loudly say he wanted a hot dog with ketchup while I recorded it. He lost.  The look on the cashiers face was priceless as she tossed him a couple stale looking packets.

I've never understood this type of food snobbery. A hot dog is not some delicacy that will be tarnished by adding ketchup. and LOL at the Chicago people getting all  high and mighty-- you can run your dog through a veggie garden but heaven forbid I put a little ketchup on mine. GTFO
Excellent post.

BBQ sauce can and should be used in place of ketchup in all situation.  Not that I'd rush to put BBQ sauce on a hot dog, but am certainly more accepting of it then something as awful as ketchup.

I always thought the Chicago anti-ketchup thing was funny since they often put on tomatoes and the relish is made with sugar.

Was at Comerica Park on Sunday...Mustard only!

At home I will do the diced onions with a little relish and mustard.

IMO: It's about flavor profiles:

Mustard/Onion/Relish/Kraut all have a certain flavor profile that compliments most any sausages. Hot Dog is a bit of a bastardized version of a sausage, but still falls in the classification.

Ketchup's boring "liquified sugar" profile doesn't really jive with a hot-dog for my tastes... but different strokes for different folks. If you wanna ride teh diabeetus express, by all means.

Who really cares what other people put on their food? It is their food, they are eating it.

For the record it depends on my mood, sometimes I do and sometimes I don't.

Ketchup only but I rarely eat hot dogs

Mustard is disgusting

Not too much to crow about here    I like mine plain, so I can taste it more  (probably had too many, if its possible)

But on that note   How them folks believing its an actual Chicago sauce..

And  On that note   All them Chicagoans not eat Chili dog's..  Which I will then add ketchup,  AND I can taste it too!

I do like to dip corndogs in mustard or ketchup whatever too

I crumble up those ketchup flavored chips and put them on my hot dog.  All the great ketchup flavor and none of the mess.

I'm friends with a dude from Seattle. Told me everyone out there puts cream cheese on their hot dog. Went and tried it. Wasn't that great. Not terrible but no ambition to try it again.

"Everybody" is an exaggeration. Somebody started a "bagel dog" stand about 30 years ago that was in Pioneer Square where all the cool bars used to be. The bun was a bagel/hotdog bun combo and cream cheese was standard, along with a bunch of other toppings.

I used to enjoy them occasionally while drunk, but I haven't had one in forever. I think a few more places might serve bagel dogs now, but it isn't like it is some massive trend or regional food specialty.

My preferred hot dog is a standard Chicago Dog - however when I am grilling at home I typically dress my dog with Ketchup/Spicy Brown Mustard/Relish/Red Chili Flakes/Black Pepper
