Kevin Mitchell Has Passed Away (1 Viewer)

Have received the news that former Redskins linebacker Kevin Mitchell has passed away today. Michell, who was a second round pick by San Fran in the mid 1990s and played for the Skins from 2000-2003, was just 36.

Details are still coming in and I have not heard anything official. There are some rumors that it may have been related to sleep apnea, but please, that is not confirmed and just something making the rounds. Mitchell was a star at Syracuse when I was there, and had a tremendous reputation on campus as a leader, a player and a person.

There are still severla people at redskins Park who knew him well or played with him, and form what I gather the team is trying to get mroe information on the tragic loss. I am sure many of you have fond memories of his play - big blocked punts or interceptions - and we'll all keep his family in our thoughts and prayers.

Isn't sleep apnea when you stop breating in your sleep? I might suffer from this condition. My girlfriend tells me that I sometimes stop breathing while sleeping. Crap, I didn't know it was that serious that you could die from it. Is there a cure?

It is serious... Stopping breathing for even five seconds wrecks havoc on your heart...If you are overweight, lose some weight...You can get a sleep study and they will probably give you a CPAP machine to help so that you don't stop breathing in the night...It sucks wearing that mask at night for the CPAP machine...

A lot of overweight people suffer from sleep apnea. I would definitely get with your Dr if you suspect it. It can be fatal. You can get a C-PAP machine (basically an oxygen mask) & use it during sleep in case you stop breathing.EDIT: Woops. Didn't see posty's post saying virtually the same thing. My bad.

Thanks for the advice. The thing is, at 6'0", 205lbs I'm not overweight. I carry my weight well. Most people think I weigh about 180lbs.If stopping breathing for 5 seconds wrecks havoc on your heart, it doesn't seem to effect swimmers very much.

Get the sleep study! A doctor will determine if it is anything to worry about. 5 seconds may not seem like a lot, but imagine if it happens 100 times every night for years. Now imagine where you have spells where it happens a couple of minutes at a time. It's serious! get checked out.

I totally agree... During my sleep study, they said that I was having 97 episodes (on average) of sleep apnea every hour... And sometimes, my heart stopped beating for those couple of seconds that I was having the episode...
