was given one as a gift last year.  not sure if it would be any different in a fireplace in your house, but it did not work outside in a firepit.  didn't smell anything.

My friend got one of those in a white elephant deal last year.   The paper has the scent in it.  The  log is just a log.   When you first start it, it smells different.   Not like KFC or anything, but different.

This might explain things.  I took it out of the paper when I burned it.

No, because I took out my fireplace years ago. I prefer the smell of regular wood anyway. Also, I live in Florida, so fires are almost exclusively outdoors as it is.
