The #1s. In Playlist Order. Part 1. (Part 2 Hopefully later today)
Belinda Carlisle. General Knowledge: Near the highest, between The Go-Gos and her solo work. Impression: A bit of a flashback, mostly high-spirited and catchy stuff. The #1: “We Got The Beat” is pretty simple yet always causes some head bopping. It’s also true of this playlist!
Michael Head. General Knowledge: I didn’t recognize the name, but ended up knowing some of his work. Impression: Incredibly strong. This is in my wheelhouse, and I plan to hit the full playlist sometime soon. The #1: “Streets of Kenny” is generally a softer song, if definitely with its explosive side.
People Under the Stairs. General Knowledge: None, though admittedly they’re in a genre I’m pretty blind to. Impression: More hits than misses. Some catchy bits and familiar samples, along with a healthy sense of humor. The #1: I genuinely enjoyed “Here, for a Good Time” and it seems like a very appropriate choice.
John Waite. General Knowledge: I knew several from The Babys and a few from solo work, though I’d forgotten about Bad English. Impression: Definitely partially a flashback, but also many great songs I hadn’t heard. The #1: I know this list was in album order, but “When I See You Smile” is a pretty worthy top song regardless.
Golden Smog. General Knowledge: Basically none. Impression: A very pleasant surprise, so they probably showed up in favorites as much as anyone. Definitely plan to revisit the playlist The #1: “V” fits right into their style
The GAP Band/Charlie Wilson. General Knowledge: Knew some of the songs, but most were brand new to me. Impression: Lots of soul, lots of power. Generally music to get you into good spirits. The #1: Obviously their most famous song, but it still hits hard
The Beat (Family). General Knowledge: Quite a few from The Beat and probably all of FYC, though General Public was unknown to me. Impression: I’ve got to appreciate a mix of styles and personnel that carries high energy throughout. The #1: I’ve probably heard this, but it doesn’t immediately hit me. Jazzy and catchy as always, though.
Caroline Esmeralda van der Leeuw. General Knowledge: Absolutely none. Impression: Probably my favorite new experience, and that’s underselling it. May influence my round 6 pick. The #1: “Back It Up” is another great song with a familiar feeling to it, with good musicianship backing up (ha?) Caroline’s strong voice.
Neil Diamond. General Knowledge: Um, yeah, pretty well. Not everything, but reasonably close. Impression: Some surprises, but the playlist hit the spots you’d expect, and I mean that as a positive. The #1: Another song (or combo, really) that I knew, though I hadn’t heard this version, which has a little more rock to it than you might expect.
Steve Marriott. General Knowledge: I knew enough of the Humble Pie and Small Faces songs that about half the playlist was familiar. Impression: Hard-hitting blues-y rock that I really enjoyed throughout. The #1: Definitely knew this one too, if not this live version, which was a strong performance.
Conor Oberst. General Knowledge: I’d more heard OF Bright Eyes than heard FROM them. So essentially all new. Impression: Generally soft and ethereal yet with power and emotion behind the songs. The #1: “Poison Oak” is a heartfelt story song, and certainly I resonate with having a song about loss (/suicide) as the top selection.
The Smashing Pumpkins. General Knowledge: From these artists, perhaps second best known going in. Impression: Pretty familiar territory, though admittedly many songs I hadn’t heard in a while if at all. The #1: Hard to say what would be my top choice, but “Disarm” is definitely a contender, its lyrics and strings gripping.
Otis Redding. General Knowledge: I knew a fair amount by him, which I’m sure isn’t surprising. Impression: A classical performer with a lot of class and his own style on songs ‘new’ and old. The #1: “These Arms of Mine” is short but right to the point, a soulful romantic song.
