Middle Aged Dummies - Artist - Round 5 - #1's have been posted. Link in OP. (9 Viewers)

Live version from Malmo, Sweden in 1996: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v4E15yWgYH0 This is the longest and best live version I have heard.
@rockaction This version is almost punk -- or at least the punkier side of shoegaze. It's noisy and chaotic and rumbling. The shakiness of the audience-shot video unintentionally captures the vibe perfectly.

The English Beat Family Tree #1

Mirror in the Bathroom

Artist - The English Beat
Album - I Just Can’t Stop It (1980)

I mentioned with my last writeup that the tiebreaker that pushed this to the #1 spot was that to me this song was one of the defining New Wave songs of the 80s and one of my favorites of the era.

Everyone always thought the song was about cocaine, and Wakeling used to complain that people (especially in the US) would always come up to him and say this song was their “favorite” with a wink and a nose tap.

Wakeling actually wrote this when he got up to work one morning after having way too much to drink the night before. He was looking at himself in the bathroom mirror questioning how he got to that point - locked in the bathroom with only himself and his thoughts and the mirror facing back at him.

The bass makes this song for me, but the sax and guitar play anre awesome too.

wat?

You’re kidding. Wow, that’s a tough one. I used to do that. Did he quit drinking and caterwauling after that?

From what I could tell in looking stuff up for this exercise, it sounds like Wakeling was popular in the British tabloids due to his partying and various romantic romps for quite a while, so I doubt he changed his ways too much.

So I can do the above post for anyone if they want it. Let me know. Spreadsheet has the, across, but for some reason, they post down on the MB starting this round.

And because Of the way the MB and the Google form changed before Round 5. I'd really like future rounds to only post Spotify songs on the spreadsheet The Y2 links don't post the song title and It looks awful IMO.

Also, typing the song name doesn't show on the MB any longer. So it might just be the Spotify link. I'll test that out and make sure.

The secret life of six
Means having fun
When everyone's inside
He's in the sun

Six knows how to stand on his head
Six knows how to stand on his head

Six knows how to stand on his head

Great list, possibly the best all around, definitely among the most recognizable

New to me, added to likes
Radio King
If I believe
Suspicious minds - love the song, did not know this cover
Who’s gonna lite it up

Favorite is tough with so many known and great songs. Cocaine, 1979, 30 days in the hole, you don’t bring me flowers, mad about you would all be strong contenders most rounds. As it is I need to announce a tie between paradise by the dashboard light (partly due to frat parties) and the legendary, one and only, Dock of the Bay

Thanks again for running with this JML. It got me listening to some of my favorite records that I may take for granted.

Also, once again I apologize for not adding songs to get my list to 31. I think I was kind of oblivious to how important having a full set was to these rankings.

Kudos to those who put this show on and to all of the members who participated. (y)

Echoed thanks to Zegras and KP for doing this.

My apologies for not doing the write ups. It was clear from the get-go that Steve Marriott didn’t resonate beyond a few folks here, so I gave up on the write ups. Will still post my Spotify playlist when I’m back from vacation next week.
@zamboni - I get it, because I felt the same way about PUTS after a bit. Here is why I feel bad when I fall behind on my comments and shoutouts because I was digging most of the tunes in the 10 spot. Yes, I was distracted more than usual with other stuff, but I also struggle a little bit when people do artists that have multiple incarnations of bands and music, especially if it sounds anything like another band in the playlist. I tend to get them confused, which is another reason why I sometimes wait for hearing the artist playlists individually so I can focus more and get an even better feel for the music. As always, appreciate the effort you and all the others put into these threads.

(Well, not Teengenerate. There would be no mistaking Teengenerate if you knew them.) But surely like even the 2000 bands like The Mooney Suzuki or any of those would-be MC5 types.

This is excellent. Thanks for the shout out. Him with the tambourine while the guitars are going crazy seems sort of funny. Another clip to that performance lists The Black Pumas for some reason. Is that them, maybe? They’re incredibly proficient. If he hired them to tour with him in ’96 that must have cost a pretty penny.
The backing band is Baby Lemonade. They worked with Lee for some of his shows in the 90s and then became the permanent “Love” in 2002 after Lee got out of prison. After Lee’s death, they have toured as The Love Band with Love’s original lead guitarist John Echols. Baby Lemonade rhythm guitarist Rusty Squeezebox took over as lead singer.

The post-prison renditions of the Forever Changes songs sound nothing like this at all. Those performances are more intricate and controlled. Probably because Lee himself was more under control.

Thanks. They looked like such '90s hipsters, and there was an obvious generation gap there with the caucasian dudes' long bangs flowing all around and whipping in a circle next to Arthur while they just played their instruments all primal and crazy whirling dervish-like. He had his tambourine and dignity even with his straightened hair, but it looked like he had no idea what to do as they rocketed off somewhere into space with those soaring solos. "A few whacks of the tambourine on the inside of my palm and that'll set it right, I guess," he seemed to think. But that paints a picture of a guy who looked bad. He didn't look bad at all, but it looked like he wanted to dance and get rid of that thing. Funny that he still was hitting it and it was freaking loud over those guitars. How? Was it amped?

That was crazy rockin'. Thanks again for the shout-out.

I was not a fan of the themes in this format. The playlist was a complete mess and was meaningless as it was hard to know which song goes with which theme.

Just my .02 but would probably sit out another straight up “theme” draft, like that last one, and wait for the next MAD artist round.

I don't know if anyone is interested, but you could do my playlist please. I'm not that Spotify savvy.

It definitely made for a more unpredictable listening experience which had it's +s and -s. I liked the break, but i am also fine with whatever someone decides to start. I do slightly prefer artist format, though.

It wasn't that they were bad songs or it didn't flow, but unlike the artist one where I start to know which artist is coming next I would have no idea which songs were for which themes. It also leads to people putting some "bad" songs on their list just to fit a theme.

That said, I'm busy with the album countdown (it takes up most of my FBG time) so may need a break anyway, so don't let me influence anything - just making conversation basically,

Yes, we entered them with our #1 song, first and her #1 song is on top. It's correct.

Michael Head #2 - Shack - "Stranger" (1995)

Sorry I fell behind at the end with my write-ups. Mrs. Eephus' birthday festivities were the main culprit but I wasn't near the keyboard much for the past several days. The final two songs in the countdown are both Shack tunes.

"Stranger" is from their lost and found album Waterpistol. It's a jazzy waltz that pays homage to Head's 60s West Coast influences. The trippy lyrics could refer to LSD or it could just be Mick trying to be deep. There are no trumpets but Head's vocalized bah-dah-de-dah in the bridge makes up for it. The instrumental section that follows demonstrates once again what a tight band Shack was/is. The interplay of John's modal guitar runs with the rhythm section is gorgeous.

Michael Head #1 - Shack - "Streets of Kenny" (1999)

Closing things out with another trumpet-free song from Shack's masterpiece HMS Fable. It was recorded around the time Mick kicked heroin for the first time. "Streets of Kenny" is one of the prettiest songs ever written about trying to score some drugs. It tells the tale of Mick searching around the Kensington neighborhood of Liverpool for his fix. He's unable to find his usual connections but he still maintains "I don't want a bag/I want a big one". It's like the Liverpudlian version of "Waiting For My Man" but the guitars soar instead of slice.

This is how I feel too. I found putting together the themed list fun, but also felt it didn't quite resonate as much as getting to know specific artists. That being said, I do have a theme in progress but depends on how it shakes out if I contribute. I do have a round 6 artist keyed up if the group goes that way.

Here's the Michael Head playlist. Thanks for all who listened to his music. If everybody listened to all 31, the resulting 837 streams would have earned Mick $1.99, assuming he owns 100% of the rights which he probably doesn't.

Thanks for all who participated. I listened to every playlist (partway through the #1s), mostly while walking Lou and thought this round flowed better than some of the others. I appreciated that some of the people who chose better known artists went with lesser-known live versions.

I felt the same. Enjoyed the theme, but when I was listening in the car, a bit tough to figure out what theme a song connected to without being able to look it up. I (perhaps mistakenly) think my Afrobeat worked despite that as easier to identify, and could probably cook up something similar if do theme again.

But I mentioned already that have been working through Aretha if/when do artists again.

Except that we ran them last to first. This playlist begins with the encore. Not that it matters. It's just weird.

A little bit of Monica in my life
A little bit of Erica by my side
A little bit of Rita's all I need
A little bit of Tina's what I see
A little bit of Sandra in the sun
A little bit of Mary all night long
A little bit of Jessica, here I am
A little bit of you makes me your man (ah)
Mambo Number Five

It’s weird when for whatever reason a list doesn’t quite hit like others. Good songs throughout, but I enjoyed 6 more.

I just posted them in the order submitted on the google form

Yes, we entered them with our #1 song, first and her #1 song is on top. It's correct.
Except that we ran them last to first. This playlist begins with the encore. Not that it matters. It's just weird.
It’s not a playlist - he’s just showing each individual list when he posts that and that’s how we each submitted our lists.

The #1s. In Playlist Order. Part 1. (Part 2 Hopefully later today)

Belinda Carlisle. General Knowledge: Near the highest, between The Go-Gos and her solo work. Impression: A bit of a flashback, mostly high-spirited and catchy stuff. The #1: “We Got The Beat” is pretty simple yet always causes some head bopping. It’s also true of this playlist!

Michael Head. General Knowledge: I didn’t recognize the name, but ended up knowing some of his work. Impression: Incredibly strong. This is in my wheelhouse, and I plan to hit the full playlist sometime soon. The #1: “Streets of Kenny” is generally a softer song, if definitely with its explosive side.

People Under the Stairs. General Knowledge: None, though admittedly they’re in a genre I’m pretty blind to. Impression: More hits than misses. Some catchy bits and familiar samples, along with a healthy sense of humor. The #1: I genuinely enjoyed “Here, for a Good Time” and it seems like a very appropriate choice.

John Waite.
General Knowledge: I knew several from The Babys and a few from solo work, though I’d forgotten about Bad English. Impression: Definitely partially a flashback, but also many great songs I hadn’t heard. The #1: I know this list was in album order, but “When I See You Smile” is a pretty worthy top song regardless.

Golden Smog. General Knowledge: Basically none. Impression: A very pleasant surprise, so they probably showed up in favorites as much as anyone. Definitely plan to revisit the playlist The #1: “V” fits right into their style

The GAP Band/Charlie Wilson. General Knowledge: Knew some of the songs, but most were brand new to me. Impression: Lots of soul, lots of power. Generally music to get you into good spirits. The #1: Obviously their most famous song, but it still hits hard

The Beat (Family). General Knowledge: Quite a few from The Beat and probably all of FYC, though General Public was unknown to me. Impression: I’ve got to appreciate a mix of styles and personnel that carries high energy throughout. The #1: I’ve probably heard this, but it doesn’t immediately hit me. Jazzy and catchy as always, though.

Caroline Esmeralda van der Leeuw. General Knowledge: Absolutely none. Impression: Probably my favorite new experience, and that’s underselling it. May influence my round 6 pick. The #1: “Back It Up” is another great song with a familiar feeling to it, with good musicianship backing up (ha?) Caroline’s strong voice.

Neil Diamond. General Knowledge: Um, yeah, pretty well. Not everything, but reasonably close. Impression: Some surprises, but the playlist hit the spots you’d expect, and I mean that as a positive. The #1: Another song (or combo, really) that I knew, though I hadn’t heard this version, which has a little more rock to it than you might expect.

Steve Marriott
. General Knowledge: I knew enough of the Humble Pie and Small Faces songs that about half the playlist was familiar. Impression: Hard-hitting blues-y rock that I really enjoyed throughout. The #1: Definitely knew this one too, if not this live version, which was a strong performance.

Conor Oberst. General Knowledge: I’d more heard OF Bright Eyes than heard FROM them. So essentially all new. Impression: Generally soft and ethereal yet with power and emotion behind the songs. The #1: “Poison Oak” is a heartfelt story song, and certainly I resonate with having a song about loss (/suicide) as the top selection.

The Smashing Pumpkins
. General Knowledge: From these artists, perhaps second best known going in. Impression: Pretty familiar territory, though admittedly many songs I hadn’t heard in a while if at all. The #1: Hard to say what would be my top choice, but “Disarm” is definitely a contender, its lyrics and strings gripping.

Otis Redding. General Knowledge: I knew a fair amount by him, which I’m sure isn’t surprising. Impression: A classical performer with a lot of class and his own style on songs ‘new’ and old. The #1: “These Arms of Mine” is short but right to the point, a soulful romantic song.
