Middle Aged Dummies - Artist - Round 5 - #1's have been posted. Link in OP. (15 Viewers)

My first spin of (last) week was a weird one but I've gone back to it a couple of times since

The music is notionally Jazz but the guitar/guitar/bass/drums lineup makes it feel more rockish. The leader Ches Smith is an incredible drummer and his rather unfortunately named Clone Row band are extremely locked it. Like I said it's weird but it won't sound completely alien to people who've liked King Crimson's 21st century live recordings or post-prog stuff like black midi. They're playing in my neighborhood in October; Mrs. Eephus is usually up for shows but this one may take some work on my part.

Don't know if anybody will see this as the nerds have migrated to a different thread but here are a passel of MADs adjacent albums of the week

Single named lady gets top billing even though it's a remix album

Has a MAD ever done Alice Cooper?

Obscure covers album by Paul Weller with lots of guests

Afrobeat from Fela's grandson

and an Allman son

Live Elton from 1977

Live Numan from 2022

Live James Talley  from 2002

Yet another Peter Buck side-project, this time with Luke Haines of the Auteurs

Nick Drake's estate empties the vault

New remasters from Be Bop Deluxe and Renaissance

A "reimagined" version of a Bruce Dickinson solo album :oldunsure:

Plus Tyler Childers, GWAR :headbang:, Fitz & the Tantrums, Patti Griffin, Indigo de Souza, Freddie Gibbs, Ryan Davis & the Roadhouse Band

My first spin is the new solo album from Cory Hanson, front man for sensational LA psychedelic band Wand who I've repped on this board for years. This album is a complete change in direction from Hanson. The guitar freakouts are replaced by a throwback mid-70s singer/songwriter sound with Cory's sweet and clear vocals accompanied by strings and horns. It's quite lovely but it's so normal it's weird considering the source.

I’ve never heard of most of the songs that Weller covers this time around, in contrast to his previous covers album Studio 150, which was mostly familiar pop, soul and rock numbers.

We’re hitting counting crows tomorrow.
I did not like them when they first hit in the '90s. I think their new album is really good.
New album? Like you, I didn't care for them in the 90s, but ive listened to the first couple albums a ton since then. Yet another band i shoould add to my "explore more" pile.

Have a great time, Oz!
It's called something like Butter Miracle. It's getting a bunch of spins on WXPN the last month or so. I'm assuming it's all new songs - keep in mind I don't know their entire catalog well at all - since I've never heard any of them in the past.

Another Afrobeat/Highlife one. K. Frimpong’s “Blue Album” showed up on iTunes and Spotify today. I had the lead track “Kyenkyen Bi Adu M’Awu” on my Afrobeat list. But his stuff has mostly been relegated to compilations, and The Blue Album as a collector vinyl. I’ve never listened to the original Blue Album. Happy to see some of that getting re-issued and put on streaming.

Dave Stewart covering Dylan
Tried listening to this one last night. It’s such a pointless album as it’s straight up solo accoustic covers and Stewart’s voice is so weak, you miss the Dylan vocals.
I’d pay big money to hear the 27-game-winning ex-A’s pitcher to cover Dylan.

I did see Black Jack McDowell's band play at Maxwells in Hoboken many years ago.
Did he give the audience the finger as he left the stage?

He was actually a pretty nice guy and hung out in the crowd and talked with people before and after his set.

I also saw Alexi Lalas' band play there which was also a lot of fun. He played a few RATT songs.

Did he give the audience the finger as he left the stage?

No, but it does remind me of seeing J. Mascis at the same venue, Maxwell's. The way the venue was set up the artists come up a stairwell and had to walk through the crowd at the bar to a back room where the bands played. In between sets when Mascis was coming back to the stage my friend, asked him to play his Bowie cover (Quicksand) and was greeted by a "**** David Bowie" from J.

That felt like a middle finger.

Thanks, I’ll take a break from Ozzy to give it a spin

It's been a heck of a last few days. But finally:
The #1s. Part 2.

Meat Loaf. General Knowledge: A little past the super big hits, but I’d never dived too deep into his catalog. Impression: He’s a performer that knows his style and 100% goes for it. You’ve got to appreciate that. The #1: A bit of an epic, though short by his standards. Very catchy and his style of romantic.

Hugh Dillon. General Knowledge: Pretty sure it was none, though see next category. Impression: A lot of these songs felt familiar, or at least in my wheelhouse. Kind of a Petty/Dylan voice for someone from Canada. The #1: Not that you could plan it, but obviously a timely Ozzy reference. This one hit me just right today.

Luna. General Knowledge: Another artist I’ll have to put in the “none” category. Impression: Lots of that dreamy, indie pop vibe that could hit me perfect depending on my mood. The #1: “23 Minutes in Brussels” might have made my “Number Please” list if I’d known it existed. Certainly vibed with me pretty well.

Metallica… just kidding.

The Doobie Brothers
. General Knowledge: Vying with Pumpkins for best known of this group. Impression: Some unknowns early on, but top half was filled with songs that I know, love, and possibly hadn’t heard in too long. The #1: Funnily, spotify “spoiled” this by playing “Listen to the Music” after the last countdown. Yet I eagerly listened to it again.

Billy Joel. General Knowledge. I’d argue in the top 5 best known overall, though this list had a lot I’d never heard. Impression: While some favorites got left out, I really appreciate the different look at an artist people think they know. The #1: I’ve heard “Vienna”, but not in a long, long time. With that comes a bit of a (happy) flashback.

Arthur Lee and Love. General Knowledge: Pretty much his/their hits, and nothing else. Impression: Definitely has elements I enjoy and certainly was/were an influence. Plan to revisit the full playlist. The #1: Ooh, this one connected with me immediately.

Beck. General Knowledge: Yeah, knew him pretty well. Impression: I get leaving off “Loser”, especially since he’s got plenty to explore. The #1: By now you’ve found that Sea Change is my favorite Beck album too. “It’s All In My Mind” is an excellent choice from there.

John 5. General Knowledge: Hmm. I didn’t know his resume, but certainly knew most of the bands chosen. Impression: Understandably a bit of a mixed bag, though he had many strong performances throughout. The #1: Not familiar with this one, but at minimum the guitar work was very good.

City and Colour. General Knowledge: A little from previous M-AD stuff, but not much overall. Impression: Very strong. His style is pretty much in my wheelhouse, so I appreciate the fuller look. The #1: “Sleeping Sickness” appropriately had a bit of a sleepy, and soft feel, and some catchy parts.

The Waterboys. General Knowledge: The big hit, and maybe another song or two? Impression: Like I said in the spotlight, it took a bit to warm up to them, but around #20 they were a threat to be in every spotlight. The #1: Though this is another list that’s not in order, this song was another great selection.

Eric Clapton. General Knowledge: A rare situation where I’ve heard a lot but have rarely to never put on an album with him. Impression: The choices were largely what you expect, but the playlist had lots of stuff to love. The #1: “Crossroads” is of course well-known and (personally) highly appreciated.

Ferry Corsten. General Knowledge: None, though partially because I don’t really visit this style of music. My loss? Impression: A bit hit and miss, though certainly more than I liked than what got listed. The #1: “Out of the Blue” has the feeling of something I’d hear during an action scene, fast beats and smooth energy.

Cornershop. General Knowledge: The big hit and nothing else. Impression: Very unique style, and I mean that as a sincere compliment. The #1: I really enjoyed the rhythm of “St. Maire Under Cannon”; definitely several catchy grooves in there.

With this post and the avatar switch, I assume that was an official declaration of your Rd 6 artist?

Yeah, I guess you can take it that way. Mostly the switch was just because. But yeah, let’s roll with the Prince.

That is quite the undertaking! Look forward to it.

I’m surprised it hasn’t been done. Song list is already 40+.
I think I’m going to do this in chronological order, paying some attention to the stuff that happened throughout.
Obviously there’s a lot more online for him than Caro.

And a few collaborations.

The Mrs and I are seeing the mighty Lord Huron tonight!
@KarmaPolice They are playing WXPN's Free at Noon on Friday. It can be livestreamed on xpn.org at noon Eastern/11 AM Central.
Thanks for this. Am i reading the site correctly and you need to sign up and its limited access? I was confused by the "sold out - rsvp" part when i was scanning just now.

I think that's just for in person attendees in Philadelphia.

Gotcha, thats what i originally thought, but didn't know if they limited online views as well. I will try to poke around more tomorrow, that would be fun to watch with my daughter on Friday. She has been listening to the Lonesome Dreams album all week.

Correct. I’m saying you can hear the performance live-streamed when it happens. xpn.org at noon Eastern/11 Central on Friday. There are no limitations on that. At the top of the page there is a link to listen to the live feed of the radio station.

Unusually light day for MAD adjacent album releases

155 tracks of Billy Joel

89 year old Buddy Guy wants to let you know he ain't done

Single named lady of the week has some lovely shoegazy dream-pop

Live album from a single named lady who made my list

Five hours of late-period Elvis rarities

Some Maynard James Keenan side project

The Warlocks

Post-Motown Holland Dozier Holland compilation

Afrobeat of the week comes from Guinea

Not flying, just burrito. I think it's a tribute act with some old timer guest stars and some recycled Gram vocal tracks

New Hayley Williams isn't on Spotify yet

We should all chip in and get the first item for Uruk-Hai for Christmas/Hanukkah/Kwanzaa/Festivus

With vacation and post-vacation work crunch over, I can finally finish out these playlists.

This was another great playlist with lots of heavy hitters.

Three known-to-me favorites from #2:

Try a Little Tenderness (Otis Redding) -- THE definitive soul music performance? Maybe.
Save It for Later (The English Beat) -- Have loved it since its first appearance on MTV way back in the day.
Master of Puppets (Metallica) -- THE definitive '80s metal performance? Probably.

Three new-to-me favorites from #2:

Stranger (Shack/Michael Head) -- Swirling and lilting. There are touches of Forever Changes here, but also the lighter side of Paul Weller's solo work.
Lust to Love (The Go-Gos) -- Successful from a songwriting perspective and a music-that-grabs-your-attention perspective.
Sugar Street (Conor Oberst) -- Dylanesque but not in an obvious way.

Lust to Love (The Go-Gos) -- Successful from a songwriting perspective and a music-that-grabs-your-attention perspective.
Great taste. That’s such a perfect pop rock song.

Careful there—some clown is going to read that while listening to it in beautiful weather and think, "well, gosh, that could the best album I could possibly imagine myself hearing! I might rank that as my favorite album ever!"
