KICKSTARTER: Pebble E-Watch (1 Viewer)

Holy crap. I've never done anything on this Kickstarter before, but I thought this iPhone-linked watch was pretty cool, and plunked down 115 bucks or so to back it and lock up a watch for myself. They had like a hundred grand in backers at that point. Not a big deal I figured.

LINK

They're now at well over 2 MILLION, and still climbing fast. Innernets is crazy, folks. Get on board if you wanna be a part of something.

Love kickstarter and the watch is a great idea.

I think the wireless ipad storage is going to be huge too

Saw this the other day and thought about it. I don't really wear watches, though. Looks pretty cool, still on the fence.

Lol at these guys having a goal of 100k and now sitting on nearly 2.5M
I've been wondering if they'll cut off the funding at some point due to overdemand. This could be akin to Groupon overexposure...I wonder how long it's going to take them to fulfill all of these orders.

Only 17,000 people have donated so far, so we can't be talking about al that many watches. Once you scale up for production, it seems like it shouldn't be that hard. Of course, there are always unexpected delays in manufacturing etc. that maybe these guys haven't built into their projected time frame. We'll see.

So if I give these guys 220 then I get 2 watches. I have never heard of this web site
It's a relatively new fundraising website. Companies put their products out there and people can choose to basically donate their money without getting any sort of equity in the company. The company then offers perks/incentives to people who donate money - in this case, you'd get a watch for a discounted price. I've seen it with breweries offering t-shirts/glassware/free beer and restaurants offering free food/gift certificates/etc.

Has anyone considered how California Hold 'Em might fare on that site? I've got a deck of cards.

It's a pretty cool site. Lots of interesting products get their start here. Last year the big idea was the watchband that fit the ipod nano, so you could wear it around your wrist. I've seen interesting camera straps and other photo accessories there too. Oh, and there's a similar site for porn. Of course.

:blackdot:

Does the number of backers effectively equate the number of units they need to ship?

That's a lot of watches.

I've never understood how willing people are to put money into these kickstarters. So you invest in a product but only receive the benefits of a consumer, except there's a very significant chance the company isn't able to keep all the promises they've made and that you've paid for, yet alone the chance that the product never even sees the light of day. So what's the fascination Otis?

Actually, I have supported 2 projects and both time my commitment turned out to be cheaper than the after sale price. But I don't do this for the savings. I like to see some of these product developed, and like the fresh take of independent designers.

:goodposting: Usually the product is cheaper when you preorder it... PLUS you're helping someone fulfill a dream / bring an innovative product to market.

This. There is something neat about knowing you are helping to get a small startup project up off the ground and keep new ideas progressing even when it's not backed by a big company. Besides, I've thrown more than this on a casual bar tab or a stupid woot purchase -- it's not like it's an enormous investment of money.

Yeah they sell it cheaper, but in the case of this watch it's only $25-50 of savings, and for those savings you have to pay 10+ months before actually receiving the product, and you're taking on the risk of the product not being as advertised and the risk of the product not being made at all. I'd like to see some of these products developed as well, particularly the ouya gaming system, but from what I've seen they really offer little in the way of incentives for the amount of risk have to take on.

Bar tabs always deliver the goods though. I can't speak for woot purchases.

So far pretty cool. Some hiccups with Bluetooth and setup, but working well now. Can't wait till they add email alerts. But texts and phone calls is great. No grasping at all your pockets to find a phone when you feel a buzz, especially when it's just Righetti with some weird one liner shtick you aren't going to respond to. The music control is also more useful than I expected--great for cycling through my Spotify tracks without having to take out my phone.

One downside so far is it definitely affects my iPhone battery life, though ill need to live with it more to see how much.

All in all it's a cool device and I can definitely see the value in these smart watches.

I'm guessing that is due to the bluetooth being on and used so much, probably the biggest negative about the watch.

Right. I don't expect it to have a major impact for me. I charge every night and plug in and charge at work, as I was already running dry by the end of the day sometimes if I didn't charge during the day. So my charging habits are such that it's unlikely to affect me. But if you're just a nighttime charger, I could see it having an impact. And when I travel, I always have my Air, and always hook up to that to charge.

Otherwise really liking it so far. OC Zed tells me he thinks it looks ####. I think he's ####. I'll post a pic.
