KICKSTARTER: Pebble E-Watch (1 Viewer)

Otis sporting the white Pebble this morning with the dressed up look

I don't care what Zed thinks, I think it's a pretty cool looking watch.

Casual, different, etc. If I wanted another dressy watch with a black leather band, I have plenty.
You're grown up now Oats. That watch isn't appropriate for business.
Disagree Chet. It's a new world out there. I wouldn't wear it in court, and probably wouldn't wear it on a first meeting with a client, but otherwise It's :moneybag:

Exactly. You woo your GF and when she becomes your wife, you let yourself slip.

Client: I haven't seen one of those before.

Oats: I got it on KS. It allows me to control the music on my iPhone.

Client:

So by "disagree", you mean "agree"?
"Appropriate for business" is a wide range. What I do in my office, what I do in other law firm offices, what I do in one client's office vs. another -- these are all business environments. And the rules aren't exactly the same as an appearance before a federal judge. (And, by the way, 99% of federal judges wouldn't give a hoot, but for the same reasons I won't wear a "loud" tie in court, but would on normal business occasions, the watch is plenty appropriate for business).

I guess part of whether it's appropriate for business depends on your aspirations and the image you want to portray.

Do you want to continue to portray yourself as a broke college kid, or do you want to portray yourself as a successful partner? You can figure out which person would wear the pebble watch in a business situation.

So far pretty cool. Some hiccups with Bluetooth and setup, but working well now. Can't wait till they add email alerts. But texts and phone calls is great. No grasping at all your pockets to find a phone when you feel a buzz, especially when it's just Righetti with some weird one liner shtick you aren't going to respond to. The music control is also more useful than I expected--great for cycling through my Spotify tracks without having to take out my phone.

One downside so far is it definitely affects my iPhone battery life, though ill need to live with it more to see how much.

All in all it's a cool device and I can definitely see the value in these smart watches.
I'm guessing that is due to the bluetooth being on and used so much, probably the biggest negative about the watch.
Right. I don't expect it to have a major impact for me. I charge every night and plug in and charge at work, as I was already running dry by the end of the day sometimes if I didn't charge during the day. So my charging habits are such that it's unlikely to affect me. But if you're just a nighttime charger, I could see it having an impact. And when I travel, I always have my Air, and always hook up to that to charge.

Otherwise really liking it so far. OC Zed tells me he thinks it looks ####. I think he's ####. I'll post a pic.
:bye:

Also, from our other buddy...

It looks like you're from the future of the distant past.

It comes down to...I'd rather have a nice watch and look at my phone than wear a battery-drainer around my wrist. Good for those who like it, though.

Smartwatches are something that tech is going to take advantage of, but tethering it via Bluetooth just to advance a music track or check notifications at the expense of battery life is kinda useless, unless you have a phablet that takes more effort to lug around and pull out of a pocket. Even then it's a waste because a phablet needs a lot of battery.

Actually battery life today is much better. It may be that all the screwing around with getting it to pair and updating the software last night and this morning drained it much worse. It may not be that bad.

Only you guys can turn a thread about a cool gadget watch into a fashion thread.

We aren't the ones trying to look all Harvey Specter sporting one in a backseat like you were Miss Daisy.

Update? Was looking in to this for Christmas. I work in tech so I can get away with wearing it around. Is there any functionality that's actually useful if I'm not a big runner and don't listen to iTunes on my phone/?

Update after having it a week. Love this thing. Much more useful than I imagined. Aside from enhanced nerd cred, it allows me to keep my phone in my pocket pretty much all day. As a compulsive phone checker person, this is a good thing. I am really enjoying it. Plus I now have Otis's wife's email address and she and I have become pen pals during the day while he is at work. Thanks Otis.
Trading it this weekend for an apple tv2. It's a neat device but completely non essential. Since i don't use it for fitness stuff it became a buzzer on my wrist that, when activated, meant "reach in your pocket and check your phone."

Like you said, its a fun gadget but I definitely agree that we're a ways off from wearable tech being useful.

Now is a bad time to buy Apple TV. Update likely coming very soon.

It's a 2, which can be jail broken and sold on eBay for $250.

I'm completely out of the loop. Why are the older generations more expensive than the current generation?

The 2 can be jail broken in a way the 3 can not.

What is the range on the Pebble? Thinking of getting one, since I walk around my house a lot and don't always have my phone in my pocket. Was thinking this way I could get texts and stuff (or at least notice of them) without carrying the phone. I could leave it in a charger to avoid battery drain too.

Bluetooth so ~20-30 yards I suppose.

Can you jail break your pebble? Might make it worth more :D

Do you think it would work one floor of a house to another?

And Pebble is dead. Customers no longer will get support, warranties void, those that went through their second round are screwed. They are supposed to get refunds but I wouldn't count on it.

Can we change this to a general crowd funding thread? There may be some interesting ideas out there worth sharing.

Smart watches in general have been pretty underwhelming and outside of the fitness tracker space I can't really see a way forward.  And you can't really avoid the fact that any watch that is designed to do anything but tell time just looks like complete ####.

It's a shame they are gone. While I was never a fan of the design I did appreciate the price at introduction and really appreciate displays that you can se e outdoors in full sunlight. Too many wearables have screens and navigation UI's that are nearly impossible to use on a bright sunny day(especially if you wear polarizing sunglasses). If nothing else Pebble offered a different option than the rest of the smartwatch landscape.

Nice youtube vid here: " RIP Pebble: What To Wear Next "

I think the Vector Luna in the link above looks pretty nice, and the model I like the best...

https://www.amazon.com/Vector-Watch-Smartwatch-30-Autonomy-Notifications/dp/B0169MX2NE

..... has been as low as $181 this year. Still haven't pulled the trigger but the battery life has me tempted.
