Killing Rampage near UC Santa Barbara (1 Viewer)

Extremely sad day in our household.
Not as sad as it could have been though. Glad to hear all are well in yours and if your daughters knew any of the deceased, may they be strong for those families.
First girl killed at the sorority played water polo at Westlake High School, where all 3 of my kids went. Freshman. I can't imagine what her parents are going through.
It feels like being punched in the gut just thinking about any of the parents.

I've only met one person with aspergers and it's eerily simalar to the way this kid talked and acted. Not the content of his words but in general. It's horribly tragic but I'm not sure what we learn from this. I'm not sure what the solution is either.

The arguing about gun laws don't hold up in this situation since he fatally stabbed 3 people and he had no actually criminal activities before this anyways. According to Wiki, aspergers is now on classified on a autism specutrum. So, I don't think you can just have a blanket policy that says people with any form of autism can't have guns. Again, the guns aren't the problem the person is. So, how do we correct this?

It seems he was seeing multiple specialists so the basic structure was in place to help him. How did they not pick up on this? Maybe they did but can't do anything. Is displaying warnings signs but with no actual crimes being committed, some a psychiatrist be allowed to lock someone away in an institute? I personally think that is an extremely slippery slope.

I refuse to accept the answer of "there's just crazy people." It's a cop out. It is true but there's more to the story. His aspergers alone didn't bring him to this but I'm sure it played a major role. I doubt there is a single thing we can point to and declare as the problem but let's add up all the parts so we don't have this happen again.

I wouldn't doubt that having things handed to him like that was in exchange for love. This kid felt nothing since 14 and I'm guessing all is life. He's probably a case like many kids of actors/directors etc that don't receive the love they need and are pacified with expensive things. Or if he really did have Asperger's Syndrome too bad it was never diagnosed. He would have received therapy as a small child and watched closely.

His parents were involved enough in his life to make their 22 year old son take down youtube videos. And it seems he was seeing therapists.

On 5/18 he posted that his parents discovered the vids and had him take them down but they will go back up in a few days.

Seems the parents should have contacted the police instead of asking him to take them down!
From what I'm reading, they did.

Attorney Shifman said the Rodger family called police several weeks ago after being alarmed by YouTube videos “regarding suicide and the killing of people” that Elliot Rodger had been posting.

Police interviewed Elliot Rodger and found him to be a “perfectly polite, kind and wonderful human,” but noted that he had few friends and no girlfriend, he added. Police did not find a history of guns.

My nephew has Asperger's Syndrome (AS) and I have taught several students with AS. In my opinion, the greatest challenge with AS students and my nephew: when outcomes are perceived as being less than their perception of perfect.

Disgust, disrespect, and contempt...pretty much the gambit of secondary emotions. Secondary emotions are powerful, as they tend to linger in an individual's mind. It takes a great deal of time and trust building to develop a relationship in which the AS individual trusts you and your perception of reality.

BTW: I'm not an expert but I'm pretty sure that Asperger's has nothing to do with it. I'm willing to say that there is a lot more going on here. Of course this is what a lot of people are going to hitch their wagons to.

Oh and the Asperger's would explain the terrible "acting" in the video(s).

Watch "Lee Harvey" here. Great example.
Yes because comedy fiction is sooooooooo close to reality.

BTW: I'm not an expert
See what I did there? That's where you should have stopped.
Funny thing is...I'm right.

I was just using the clip from "Stripes" as an example of that disconnect between what most of us see as real emotions and reactions.

No, the funny thing is that you've convinced yourself you are right.

He wrote in his manifesto that if the cops searched his room that day it would have been over.

Something called the 4th amendment would have stopped them. Damn the Constitution and all.

He had 3 guns legally registered to him. If he was deemed a potential threat, it would be nice for the police to know he had them in advance.

Was there any info on the guys he stabbed at his apartment? What was his issue with them? I am assuming they weren't really friends but just room mates that he found through Craigslist or something.

Of course it's going to happen again. The search for perfect safety, just like the search for perfect justice, is a worthy goal, but we're never going to reach it. It doesn't mean we should stop trying, but there are limits to what we can do and still have a free society. And having that free society means accepting that there will be tragic occasions sometimes.

Of course there's going to be these kinds of things but like you said kind of said it doesn't mean you stop looking for at least improvements.

But the main thing about my earlier post is that I'm not sure what the solution or learning point is.

brutal. I went to westlake as well. That was a while ago though. Played baseball with Mike Lierberthal which dates me.Glad to hear your kids are safe.

Sounds like the "system" worked about as well as its going to. The parents notified the police. The police interviewed the guy. In addition the guy was in therapy, so it's not a case of a mentally ill person not getting help. As regards gun laws, Califonrnia already has some of the strictest in the nation.

The point is this: as a society we did everything we could to prevent this crime, and yet it happened anyway. I can't think of anything much more that we could do. Some guys just fall through the cracks.

He didn't even fall thru the cracks. We just can't predict the future.

I always wonder in these cases, did the guy go into this knowing he would die? Did he think he could actually get away somehow? Was he always planning to off himself or was that a choice made in the heat of the event?

From the manifesto:

“When I see the first police car come to their rescue, I will drive away as fast as I can, shooting and ramming anyone in my path until I find a suitable place to finally end my life.”

We did a training workshop back in August dealing with school shootings. One line from an expert on the topic stuck with me "we have to assume that school shooters have two goals: to kill as many people as possible and to die."

Yeah, it ends that way so often that I think at this point it has become this narrative that the killers play out. It is supposed to end with their death. I'm surprised more of them don't try to or think they can escape.

Damn, Judge. Glad to hear your girls are OK.
So long as they don't go to the SB Zoo today.
Et tu, Brutis?I wrote that it gave me chills. That's it.
Tim accusing someone of racism again. Par for the course.

Urban Dictionary: Brutis. A badass redneck that is really racist and likes to get drunk and fight everyone, while yelling racist slurs. Wow Brutis is the biggest crazy redneck ever.

Bigot.

I'm reading "My Twisted World". I got through the first 70 pages and it's pretty sad. I brace myself for much darker stuff in the second half.

Would love the Cliff's. Can't see forcing myself to slog through it, but can't help feeling a morbid curiosity.

- girls don't find me attractive

- girls spend time with unattractive guys and I'm attractive

- girls must bow down to me

- all girls must die

- I am a God

- I am going to laugh now

- The answer to this Sudoku puzzle is impossible to solve
