It's not comfortable and not as convenient for people to get up down if they are in the middle (longer benches)

No back support. Everyone has to sit exactly the same distance from the table. That's a recipe for disaster with competitive kids.
At least with the Amish stuff, you can always order new chairs if you come to hate the bench.

if one person has to get up, it disturbs whoever else is sitting on the bench. often, both people have to get up. if we want use the 4 chairs and sit across from each other, the bench has to be moved and "stored" somewhere else. currently we have the 4 chairs around the table and bench at one end. that end is against a wall, so it doesn't look too awful. but it doesn't look good. we also can't walk around that end of the table with the way it is now.
mostly, it's uncomfortable. god speed with the wife.

The one good thing about the bench is that it is easy to store and use if you don't use it very often. We have 4 chairs and the bench. 95% of the time the bench is in the office/spare bedroom. The only time ours gets brought out is if all of the kids are home for a meal. It is handy because I can just bring the bench out instead of multiple chairs. It sounds petty and it is, but it is still handy. I agree though, I couldn't see sitting on it every day for meals.
