Kitna's Backup (1 Viewer)

Who will Jon Kitna's backup be? Orlovsky seems to be listed 2nd on depth charts I have seen, but Joe and the coach talk like it is O'Sullivan's job. Will Orlovsky be the #2 QB when he gets well? And if so, when do we expect him to be well enough to play? I have no clue.

Didn't know Orlovsky was hurt. He was dressed last week on the sidelines. JT was the #2 QB in preseason and if Stanton wouldn't have got hurt and put on IR, I'm not sure Orlovsky would even still be on the team.

Orlovsky didn't play during the preseason because he suffered the dreaded turf toe injury. He told Tony Ortiz (Lions insider, WXYT 1270 AM) yesterday that the toe won't be a problem for him this week. Ortiz pushed asking if he would elaborate further and he just said "no, it's fine".. something to that effect.

I've been thinking O'Sullivan is the #2, but I'm not so sure.. Now that Orlovsky is healthy it could be his job again and O'Sullivan has been in that spot due to Orlovsky's injury.

Maybe Anthony Borbely knows a little more on the subject.

Orlovsky gives them the best chance if Kitna goes down. He has been there just as long as Kitna and should know the offense a lot better than o'sullivan. He looked decent in the preseason before the turftoe. JT looked a little nervous last week and Minny was bringing the heat on him. They looked like a totally different team with Kitna in there.

I think O'Sullivan will remain #2. Martz seems to think he is better equipped to run the offense, and even though he has not played much in his career, he has more experience in the league than Orlovsky, and makes better decisions.

This is definitely a situation worth monitoring because the backup Lion QB will be gold if Kitna ever gets hurt.

I've been thinking of picking up Orlovsky because I just dont see kitna's back holding up. I'm in Houston and I''ve seen first hand what a back injury can do to a player(Mcgrady) for a while it seems fine but all of a sudden you go down and stay down. Anthony do you think Orlovsky can really operate this offense week in and week out or will he be terribly inconsistent?

From rotoworld...

Despite a shaky performance in relief Sunday, coach Rod Marinelli said Monday that J.T. O'Sullivan remains Jon Kitna's backup, leaving him one injury away from a whole slew of passing yards …

While neither backup is all that good, either of them would be a viable fantasy QB in this offense. The passing yards will be there. Look at O'Sullivan's numbers, he threw for 148 yards, a TD and 2 picks in about a half. I'll take 300 passing yards and 2 TD's over a game any time. He may throw more picks, but any QB in this offense will pile up some passing yards.

From what I am hearing around here, Martz thinks O'Sullivan makes better decisions than Orlovsky right now. It did not help that Orlovsky was hurt. For now, O'Sullivan is the backup. I can't say with any certainty how it will be in a month, or 2 months, but my personal opinion is it will stay like it is right now.

Good information here guys, and not to sound rude, but what started this thread? Is there belief out there that Kitna isn't going to last the season because of all the shots he's been taking? After seeing that shot to the back he took in week 1 I started thinking that anyways.

I only ask because I was offered Kitna in a deal yesterday.

Not saying this one piece isn't correct but ROtoworld is the worst place for information. That is based on their opinions and not actual facts. I think JT is 3rd string when the 3 are healthy.

True the rotoworld thoughts but what part of "coach Rod Marinelli said" would make that an opinion?

Rotoworld is correct in this instance. Marinelli stated the above in his press conference.

Probably because Kitna is being beat up and knocked out of the game Sunday by a concussion in the 1st half that he eventually returned from late in the 4th quarter. That and Martz's offense is gaining traction in a big way now.Bulger is getting his ### kicked too. Seems like it's only a matter of time before one or both of these guys goes down for the count.

I didn't read the whole press conference but of course JT is the backup right now. They are the only two healthy QBs on the roster. Was the the "whole slew of passing yards" quoted too or just rotoworlds opinion. I'd bet the latter. And the statement doesn't say near as much if you take that out.

The slew of passing yards comment was Rotoworld. I agree with that too. O'Sullivan threw for 148 yards in a half. The offense will have a lot of passing yards no matter who the QB is.

Lions: Orlovsky returns to practice Thursday 9/20, 11:53 AM CT

Dan Orlovsky practiced on Thursday for the first time since he suffered a turf toe injury during the second preseason game, according to the Detroit News. His status for Sunday's game against the Eagles has not been determined.

Our View: The Lions could have used Orlovsky when Jon Kitna suffered a head injury last week. Orlovsky was the No. 2 quarterback before he suffered the injury and we expect him to regain that spot on the depth chart from J.T. O'Sullivan.

O'Sullivan was regarded as a sleeper a few years ago, and dominated NFL Europe around that time. I don't think he's a talentless hack. Last week was his first real NFL action.

Any updates here? I'd really like to back up Kitna and can't roster both. Lions website says Orlovsky is #2, but I'm not sure if it is up to date.
