KR/PR Info or Insight? (1 Viewer)

Is there consensus on IDP players that might get return yards? I have the following as the best potentials:

TJ Rushing, Ind KR/PR

A Rossum, Pit KR/PR

McGee, Buf KR

Finnegan, Tenn ?

Blackmon, GB ?

Sams, Bal KR/PR (? - Figurs)

Miller, NYJ KR

Carr, Oak KR/PR (? - Higgins)

There are others that have shots (Reed, Phi, McQuarters, NYG, others?). As Mike says above, Reed may already be the KR.

Anyone have insights to these situations, especially now that cuts have been made?

Mike, do you see Pearman cutting into any return role in Seattle.

What about in Minnesota what you see Mewelde on PR and Aundrae Allison on KR.

I just did a draft last night that gives pts for returns and ppr..

Holmes is a nice pick, Hester late if you think he'll get a fair amount of catches.

Bush and MJD are obviously huge in this format

What does Rossum do to Holmes return potential?

What's the word on Bobby Wade in MIN?

Any returns coming?

Also, it looks like Hixon and Lance Moore, WRs, have landed the KR/PR jobs for their teams. Will either of them have any role on offense as well?

GREEN BAY

Returner Will Blackmon keeps telling special teams coordinator Mike Stock he 'll have no problem catching the ball on punts and kickoffs in the Green Bay Packers ' regular-season opener against the Philadelphia Eagles Sunday at Lambeau Field. Stock will believe it when he sees it. "I just looked at the punt coverage and punt return (film) and I didn 't see him catch a ball, " Stock said after Monday 's practice. "He was back there, but I didn 't see him try to field a ball. He said he could field them fine, but I was looking for evidence and I didn 't see it. "

Instead, cornerback Charles Woodson, wide receivers Greg Jennings and James Jones, and cornerback Tramon Williams caught most of Jon Ryan 's punts in practice. Woodson held the punt returning job last year, while Williams filled in for Blackmon in the preseason finale Thursday at Tennessee after Blackmon suffered a Bennett 's fracture of his left thumb late in the Aug. 23 game against Jacksonville.

Blackmon is wearing a cast on his thumb and has played cornerback on defense despite the injury. He was slated to take one punt against the Titans but did not. Stock said he will have Blackmon catch punts with the cast in practice Wednesday, although the NFL requires him to wear a different cast -- one with more padding -- in games than he wears in practice.

If Blackmon can 't do returns against the Eagles, Woodson or Williams would handle punts and Williams would line up with running back DeShawn Wynn on kickoffs.

I'd love to hear the answer to the Wade question as well.

I just have to ask this because it makes a massive difference in my draft tonight: Is MJD definitely going to continue as the primary KR guy for Jax? For me, that bumps him up by about 75 points on the year, meaning he's a better pick for me than Henry or even Westbrook. Obviously drafting him that high and finding out that he's been taken of KR might cause me to fall on a sharp sword shortly after the draft

Hey Mike. Is there any point in which a final depth chart (of returners and starters in general) is released by the NFL teams? So many of the teams don't use their regular returners during the preseason, making it quite difficult to determine who is the return guy. In my league's format, Jones-Drew finished 5th (yes 5th) in scoring last year, but it has been looking like Pearlman and Northcutt will be bringing back kicks and punts respectively. His value now sinks to lower end RB2 if he doesn't return the kicks, but I don't know!

I could also love to get my hands on a final WR depth chart, because of those kick returners who end up being high up on the depth chart. Lance Moore (Saints) intrigues me right now, because he appears to be the return guy and has a chance at 4th WR or higher on that team. Any idea if he could be the #3 WR? Thanks!
Teams will have KR and PR listed on the depth chart on their official team webpage, although that may not always be who ends up being used on gameday. That's especially true with returners... since some are at the bottom of the depth chart at their respective offensive or defensive position, they may wind up being inactive on game day even though they are at the top of the KR/PR depth chart. Each week during the season, you can find info on FBG as follows:1. Returnerguys (typically on Wednesday) will have KR/PR player news and notes

2. Players in the News... updated each day thru Saturday

3. Breaking News on Sunday mornings, including list of Inactives
Is Returnerguys on the schedule for this week. I am a subscriber but are new to the site and would like to make suitable changes if Tab Perry, Welker, McGee, and a few others are not returning kicks. TIA

Yes, that would definitely help to see before my draft at 8pm

Right now I'm up in the air as to whether I go Henry/Harrison or Chad/MJD. If MJD is the primary KR guy, it's an easy decision.

Yes, I submitted this week's edition. I'm guessing it will be posted tonight.Be wary of Welker... it looks like a committee situation!

Any other DB returner types a la T. McGee and J. Miller on the radar?

Also, in a PPR league that also awards a point per 25 return yards, would you rather have Jerry Porter or Devin Hester?

ETA: Is T.J. Rushing a better IDP player than Adrian Wilson or Antoine Winfield under the same scoring system as described above?

What is your opinion of Finnegan? Does he have the job and is he a #2 or more likely a nickle?

 Anyone have any other updates? Herman seems to think it will be a committee approach in Tenn, so Finnegan might lose some value there.

I think a sneaky play this year could be Nate Burelson, he may end up as the #2 receiver ahead of Hackett and could be returning both punts and kickoffs.

Mole

The Dolphin's team site still lists Ronnie Brown as their primary kickoff returner. The Vikings website doesn't list anyone (but it's supposedly Bobby Wade). Does anyone have any current insight into either of these situations?

And as far as the kickoff return situation, it's being reported by many outlets that Cam said any combination of Ronnie, Jesse, and Ted Ginn will be back there. But Cam didn't actually say that, at least not in the portion of the press conference that I watched. What he said was he will use different combinations back there. Then he said "it could be Jesse" and that Ted "will probably be back there." He also said he'd let it evolve through the course of the week. He never mentioned Ronnie until a reporter asked if the "Ronnie Brown experiment" was over. Cam then said that it wasn't an experiment and that Ronnie was a good kick returner. What he never did, though, was mention Ronnie's name as a potential kick returner for Sunday. He did say he was good at it and that they'd look at "different combinations." In my opinion, I think we'll see Ted and Jesse back there on Sunday.

MINNESOTA

The Vikings' depth chart lists Bobby Wade as their kick returner and Mewelde Moore as the punt returner, but no final decisions have been made, according to special teams coordinator Paul Ferraro. Aundrae Allison (kickoffs) and Charles Gordon (punts) also are options. "We got some of those young guys some repetitions during the preseason games and obviously we have some experience with Bobby and Mewelde," Ferraro said. "I'm excited about the options that we have there but those are ongoing conversations right now with coach Childress."

Aside from the Colts first punt last night, Lance Moore seemed to be the deep man on all other kicks, and seemed to do ok. That 30 yard punt return was nice, but he didn't really show much on the KR's. Still though, I wonder if Reggie Bush is going to be phased out of the return game.

A little bit discouraging with respects to Moore is that it appears that Patten is the clear 3rd receiver, so I doubt we're going to see too many receptions out of him this season.

Per an interview on Sirius, Bush expects to be incorporated into KR duties this season. I don't think they will phase him out, I think they will be looking to phase him in, at least more than last night. Frankly, it wouldn't suprise me to see bush back @ KR a majority of the time at some point in the future.Or, it could be be a situation where Bush goes on ST when the team needs a spark and a little extra could mean a lot.

CAR – HC John Fox on the kickoff returner position, “We're not saying who we're definitely playing in the game, but he's [Nick Goings] one of the guys. You could see Ryne Robinson. You could see Nick. You could even see DeAngelo [Williams]. I think we have more choices than we had a year ago.

CIN - Released WR/PR Antonio Chatman.

MIA – HC Cam Cameron indicated that kickoff returns will be handled by a committee of WR Ted Ginn Jr., RB Jesse Chatman and RB Ronnie Brown. He noted regarding Brown, "I wouldn't call it an experiment. I think he's good at it. I think he's very good at it."

NYG – Rookie RB Ahmad Bradshaw will probably handle kickoff returns this week, rather than incumbent RB Derrick Ward.

PIT - HC Mike Tomlin discussed the returner situation, "We're going to let those guys compete and watch them. That will be the common theme with everything we do. ... I'm going to call on guys to continue to improve while we're preparing to play football games. We have to continue to grow. I challenged Willie [Reid] to continue to grow. I expect Allen [Rossum] to show what he's capable of and I'll make that decision closer to game time." He further noted that WR Santonio Holmes is no longer part of that scenario, so he can focus on offense, "I think acquiring Allen allows us to do that with [Holmes]."

My first year in a league with return yards so don't beat me up too much.

When looking to pick-up and start a KR/PR, I'm starting to think that teams with bad defenses facing good offenses are the way to go. For example, Sproles in San Diego plays on a team with a solid defense but Cribbs in Cleveland play on a team with a bad defense. Both are listed to return kicks and outs.

So, Cribbs would be the choice here (especially if they are playing a team with a good offense).

Also, if the team playing Cribbs has a kicker who tends to kick the ball out of the endzone which will limit his number of returns, then this might aid in who to start.

Are these the two important considerations?

With B.J. Sams nursing a sore right knee, and Ed Reeds nice return monday. Does this make Ed Reed the priamry Punt / Kick returner in Baltimore?

Earnest Graham seems to be Tampa's primary kickoff returner and, if Caddy misses any time, should also get some touches on offense.

What happened to Cortland Finnegan in Tennessee? He started at corner and had 3 solos & 2 assists, but ZERO return yards. Did someone else return for them?

What is the possibility of getting D/ST rankings for leagues that use KR and PR yardage for the D/ST in addition to the regular D/ST stats? 1 point per 25 PR/KR yards, for example.

Just a heads up regarding the NFL.com boxscores ...

It looks like many of the returns stats for players are omitted from the boxscores. I imagine most leagues are using automated scoring to tally points for this stuff, but if you are using NFL.com boxscores to search out returners for scouting or whatever, it's something to keep in mind. Check the play-by-plays or the stat section for more correct info.

Mike:

What do you think about this signing:

Cincinnati Signed free agent wide receiver Antonio Chatman to a one-year contract. Chatman is a fifth-year NFL player. He was with the Bengals in preseason, but did not play due to a hamstring injury, and he had been released to free agency on Sept. 7.

Does it mean that he could now be up for the KR job because they are not happy with T. Perry? Your thoughts would be appreciated!

Chatman is a punt returner. They may have simply been working around having his salary guaranteed for the year (if that is how that works)?

The Eagles have contacted Reno Mahe...
And Bloom too apparently (from PhillyBurbs' Reuben Frank)

The Eagles contacted both Reno Mahe and Jeremy Bloom yesterday but by last night hadn't made a move. Mahe wasn't in a training camp this year. Bloom has been out of work since the Eagles released him on Aug. 31.

... also this from PhillyBurbs' Mike Sielski's plea to bring Bloom back:

"Mahe hasn't played since last season. Yet because Mahe would be in his fifth year as an NFL player and Bloom would be in his second, under the league's minimum salary scale it would cost the Eagles $510,000 to sign Mahe but only $360,000 to sign Bloom. And don't think that extra $150,000 doesn't make a difference to this salary cap conscious franchise."

Looks like it's Mahe:

Eagles sign returner Reno Mahe to 1-year deal

By ROB MAADDI - AP Sports Writer 2007-09-11 18:49

PHILADELPHIA (AP) -The Eagles solved their punt return problems by turning to a familiar face.

Reno Mahe signed a one-year contract with Philadelphia on Tuesday, giving the team a sure-handed returner with experience. J.R. Reed was released to make room for Mahe.

Who will return punts became a hot topic in Philadelphia because Greg Lewis and Reed each had costly fumbles in a 16-13 loss to Green Bay in the opener. Neither player had ever returned a punt in a regular-season game before Sunday.

Mahe had been out of the NFL since the Eagles declined to re-sign him following last season. The reserve running back was the team's primary returner on punts and kickoffs last season. He averaged 9.4 yards on 18 punt returns and fair-caught 12 others. In 2005, Mahe led the NFL with an average of 12.8 yards on 21 punt returns and had nine fair catches.

Overall, Mahe has averaged 9.4 yards on 64 punt returns in four seasons, while making 35 fair catches. His longest return is 44 yards. Mahe doesn't have breakaway speed and isn't a threat to go the distance, but he catches the ball and makes good decisions.

It's unknown whether Mahe will be ready when the Eagles host the Washington Redskins on Monday night.

Lewis was thrust into duty after seeing limited action as a returner in the preseason because the Eagles cut Jeremy Bloom.

A fifth-round pick in 2006, Bloom spent his rookie year on injured reserve and was hoping to make the team as a return specialist. The former Olympic skier averaged 7.8 yards on 10 punt returns in the exhibition games. The Eagles didn't want to carry six wide receivers and couldn't justify keeping Bloom because he wasn't spectacular.

Brian Westbrook is Philadelphia's best option, but he's such an indispensable part of the offense that coach Andy Reid is reluctant to risk him getting injured on special teams. Westbrook has 35 career punt returns, including two for touchdowns in 2003.

``If it comes down to it, I'll do it,'' Westbrook said after the loss to the Packers.

Reid admitted he was considering using Westbrook.

``There's a possibility on that,'' he said.

But Mahe's return means Westbrook probably won't be used in that role.

Teams have used valuable players on special teams in the past. Tim Brown served as the primary punt returner for the Oakland Raiders for the first nine seasons of his career, even though he was a Pro Bowl wide receiver. Deion Sanders was one of the best cornerbacks in the league, but returned punts throughout his career.

Ravens safety Ed Reed, a Pro Bowler, returned a punt for a touchdown in Monday night's loss to Cincinnati.

Couple Q's that are open for any answers....

Looked at depth chart and it says Finnegun is the KR still and Griffen is 3rd guy on the chart. Anyone here of anythings as to why this got switched on gameday?

Sams is out for the year, who takes over?

Is Drummond the guy in KC as they had a CB, forgot his name, get two KO's as well.

Is Manning the primary KR for the Bears?

Did the Pats kick away from J. Miller?

A. Peterson was the KR for Minnesota in Week 1. Will that continue? Is Wade not going to be doing kickoff returns?

Saw this on KFFL:

Ravens | Figurs to take over on kickoff returns

Tue, 11 Sep 2007 18:18:07 -0700

Jamison Hensley, of the Baltimore Sun, reports Baltimore Ravens WR Yamon Figurs will take over on kickoff returns.

"We'll determine at the end of the week how we want to proceed. It could be a combination of both [Cory Ross and Yamon Figurs]."
