Kreutz Walks Away from Saints (1 Viewer)

As I wrote in the OL article...

"They let Jonathon Goodwin go who was fading at Center from where he was but then they settle on a fossil that ranked almost dead last in 2010, Olin Kreutz. Now Kreutz has been on perennial bad lines in Chicago and was always thought of as the best part in that mess but still he is old and a liability on almost any OL in the league."

Guy was terrible.

It's telling that Saints fans favor De La Puente, a journeyman who has been on six teams in 3 years and never played center until a few weeks ago. :lmao:

Wasn't he a captain of the team?

Late in his career, he was awful on the field, an old finesse center playing in a league that had moved on.

He was always trumpeted as a leader, but to me, it appeared that the chicago newspaper writers got all their "behind the scenes" team news from him, so they carried his water in the papers for at least two years. Every city has one of these guys and the reporters really cry when that person leaves.

The Bears line is better without him. Likely the Saints will be better without him.

Fine career.

If the Saints are not able to run the football when they need to they won't go far in the playoffs.
I think it might be a factor on Payton wanting to throw it 45-50 times instead.
Excellent point TD, weren't they supposed to run the ball more this year and part of the reason they reloaded at RB?
I think that was the point, but just not executed for whatever reason. Rotoworld's take had an "odd" blurb that he "looked to be 275 lbs. dripping wet". Not sure what the average center weighs today, but that sound like early 90s/late 80s (or "one-cut") weight for a Center. My "guess" is that he is old, tired and doesn't see it as a good life move to put on 25+ pounds as a guy in his mid-30s. While some may feel he is giving up, I think he is being responsible by admitting he just doesn't have it anymore and letting the team move on.

This probably has other fantasy implications, with Chris Ivory about to come off PUP and a roster spot suddenly open.

Since Payton won't personally be able to run for a while maybe he thinks the team shouldn't either. I too thought the Saints were supposedly committed to the run this year but I guess that hasn't worked out so well for them. I think Kreutz had a decent year last year after 2 bad years (supposedly playing with an injury during the bad years that was fixed by surgery in the 2010 offseason) but his skills have definitely declined. I think this is a selfish move because he is quitting his team. He shouldn't have signed a contract if he had any doubt about his passion to play football. If the Saints told him that he stunk up the joint and he was no longer in their plans this season than I might be able to understand this move. Maybe this did happen so he decided to walk away. Kreutz has always been a bit of a head case.

Regardless of the past few months I'd like to see him retire as a Bear. That being said, this may be my last on field memory of Kruetz. I love the way he looks up for the license plate number at the 25 second mark.

The video has been acting weird, so if it doesn't play click ahead 2 or 3 seconds and it should start.

14 seasons and 195 games, not like he had much left in him anyway. I can't evaluate o-linemen worth a damn, but he usually had a high rating on Madden...great career, enjoy retirement.

I'm sorry. I'm not a guy who thinks this is a noble thing by Kreutz. I see it as quitting on his teammates.

He thinks he is making too much, take a pay cut. He doesn't think he a starting center, be second string. Support the next guy. But don't quit on your teammates. I don't care what he has in his tank. Heart goes a long way.

I have tremendous respect for what Kruetz has done in the NFL. And I really don't care that much about the move. The next guy will probably be better than him anyways. But I feel bad for Kruetz. He will always remember how he ended his career. Not with a bow, but with his tail between his legs. Beat. Quitting.

Maybe I'm being too tough on him. Maybe there is more to this than we know. But at first blush, I'm disappointed in the former Bear. If he had doubts, he shouldn't have come back at all.

The saying "passion is gone" is an euphemism for "I have enough money so if you don't want to play me, I don't need to be standing on the sidelines and be a cheerleader."

Or it's a euphemism for "the headaches are getting too severe and I'm on the verge of getting addicted to painkillers".

:goodposting:

He was outplayed by De La Puente after he got hurt. Instead of being benched, he quit. So what? He has earned the right to call his own shot. The Saints and him are both better off.

That week 2 win was important. Thanks for stopping bye, Olin, and good luck going forward.

Exactly. And regardless of the reason, the man made a decision that he thinks is best for him and likely best for the team.Who are we to judge? People.....We are a trip!

That's a pretty good angle Sea Duck. Obviously all speculation but that wouldn't surprise me. Tough moment because the coach got hurt even though folks are blowing it off as nothing. They really need leadership and if Kreutz couldn't play he should have gone to the front office and asked what they wanted him to do. Maybe he did.

One of the website just posted an interview with backup center Brian De la Puente saying he had been working with the first team since Wednesday.I'm guessing everybody noticed Kreutz sucking and they asked him to take a seat and he didn't care for that idea.

I find it interesting that they call this "walking away" rather than "retiring". One sounds a lot worse than the other.

I think it's a pretty apt use of the phrase. Retiring is what you do sometime between March and August. Walking away is what you do sometime between Monday and Friday...in week 7.

went to bears training camp in bourbonnais, il years back, this was was a maniac. was screaming and saying weird #### the whole time.

There's conversations missing here. I am extremely confident this was not sudden. MoP and 10k others knew this day was coming, the Saints had to. I would guess he spoke to Payton, his OL coach, his agent, and even Mawae.

I didn't have the pleasure of meeting Kreutz ever but it's not hard to get a work hard, warrior type impression from the guy. I distinctly remember questioning him as a top C, watching some Bears games and being thoroughly impressed. He was battling anyone and everyone while his fellow linemen were getting owned. I don't think I've ever seen an OL take on so many extra blocks. They usually do their assignment and possibly take on another. He was onto his 3rd or 4th guy and (yes) the QB was taking a lifetime to chuck it and the RB could have run backward faster than he was running. I firmly believe guys like him are why the Bears improved from a bad team.

We praise Hester for squeaking by 6-7 guys on a run back and rarely beat up the ones that missed their blocks. We should, but we just don't. I'm telling ya there's some guys that were on those Bears teams that had to do far more than they should have, but they did and deserve some credit.
