As the Bears' injury report grew Friday, coach Lovie Smith's plans for Sunday's regular-season finale that has all the intrigue of a preseason game remained shrouded in secrecy.
He would not say if quarterback Rex Grossman would start at Minnesota (3:15 p.m., Fox-32, 780-AM), but No. 2 Kyle Orton received about half the snaps in practice, a clue he will see significant time if he does not start.
''There is a chance of a lot of things happening,'' Smith said. ''I'm excited about Rex being healthy and leading our team right now. We're going up there with all of our guys ready to go.
"There is a chance Rex could play, couldn't play, all of those. I'm going to say that about every guy on our team. If they are healthy, there is a good chance they could play, but they may not. You know how that goes.''
Middle linebacker Brian Urlacher returned after being out two days with an illness, but did not practice. Defensive end Adewale Ogunleye was held out and is questionable with a slight hamstring pull suffered Thursday. Running back Thomas Jones was out, but is listed as probable with a hip injury. The belief is he will play long enough to gain 27 yards and reach 1,300 for the season.
Rookie Cedric Benson, who is questionable, could get a lot of work after completing an entire week of practice. He said a final decision will come today, and he is anxious to get back on the field seven weeks after spraining the MCL in his right knee.
''I did a lot this week,'' he said. ''It looks like [i will play].''
There's no rule for how to handle a meaningless regular-season game. Green Bay was in a similar position coming to Soldier Field for the finale last season. The Packers went with their starters as Brett Favre blitzed the defense for two quick touchdown passes and then Green Bay pulled almost its entire first unit.
The difference is the Bears have a bye, and the Packers had to play the following week, losing to Minnesota at Lambeau Field.
