L. McCOY'S HUGE TIP (1 Viewer)

Sorry... if you're a normal person you leave a tip every time. If you want make a point leave 10%.

You'd have to be a complete ####### to stiff minimum wage waitstaff if you're making millions.
even if the service is complete ****?
People need to get over themselves. It's a burger joint. Did someone take your order? Did you get your food? 10%
Was it their job to do it?

I am so sick and tired of this entitled bull#### mentality.

If I get crappy service, why the hell should I leave a tip? If I wanted lousy service or lousy food, I would make my own damn dinner.

I would never leave a tip like that. I might speak to management, but I'm not going to leave an insultingly low tip to make a point. That's just douchey.
Agreed. I'd leave nothing before I'd leave .20 cents. But the post he responded was about leaving a minimum of 10% regardless of service level. I don't think he was talking about the 20 cent tip.
Everybody's different. I'd never leave 10%. If it were up to me, waiters would not be exempted from minimum wage laws. But they are. Which means that an adequate tip ensures a living wage. Which is why I'd be far more likely to ask to speak to management than to just tip poorly to send a message. Particularly because bad service can be attributed to things beyond a server's control. Maybe the kitchen is behind or screwed up my order and had to restart.

In any case, I can't remember tipping below 20%, but I've also never received any worse than inattentive service. No server has ever been rude or anything. Maybe that's because I prefer only acting like a #### on the internet.

I guess I'm not normal. If you give me crappy service you get a crappy tip. Even if I hit the lottery next week.

Different strokes.

I'm going 17-20% pretty much no matter what happens and I don't remember the last time I went under 15%. Waitstaff don't get even minimum wages, work hard and generally need the money. I get paid even if I have a bad day or make a mistake and IMO they should too.
Yeah. In your world there is no difference between good service and bad service. You just tip the same amount basically every time. So, in your mind, what is the actual incentive for a server to provide good service if they get paid the same, regardless. Assuming a world filled with patrons such as yourself?

Lousy food has nothing to do with your server.

Do not agree with this. It is called a service job because you are a server. If you are piss poor, you deserve nothing or a good mocking.

Yes it does. Are you telling me the server does not know the difference between food that has been sitting and is cold vs. food that came fresh off the line?

So what? I go to a restaurant to get served food that isn't crappy. My overall experience is reflected in my tip. It's not my responsibility to determine which individual in the chain of service should be blamed or rewarded.

Do you go higher if the service is exceptional? If so, why?

His only mistake was not documenting the bad service on the receipt. With his celebrity, he has to think there's a decent chance the receipt ends up being posted somewhere.

I didn't read the article the OP posted, but the one I read said the waiter forgot the appitizer and wasn't around when they were trying to order. I'm not sure if I would have tipped $.20, but he wouldn't have gotten more than a few bucks from me if that did happen.

Wrongo... He paid what the cost of the food was and tipped for the service. My guess is it was accurate and got the point across.

self-righteous restaurant workers are more annoying than bad tippers.
This...And I feel bad for a lot of the good restaurant workers who now get a bad name from folks like that lesbian chick who falsely said that couple left an anti-gay slur on their check.

Yeah...I'm with you. One of my biggest pet peeves are when they bring out the appetizer, then like 2 minutes later bring out the entree. I intentionally order the app, then wait 5 minutes, then order dinner if I'm at a chain place. Nicer restaurants know how to time orders so folks get food at a decent pace. I eat VERY slowly, so this is a big problem for me.

That said, completely forgetting an appetizer is worse than bringing it late. I'd bet money that waiter was in the back telling all his buddies that he's waiting on LeSean McCoy and completely forgot to wait on LeSean McCoy.

Even forgetting something or screwing up my order is not a capital offense in my book. It happens. The kitchen can be slow. I get it.

Be attentive. You don't have to kiss my ###, but don't walk by my table five times without checking on me. Fill my water glass when it gets empty. Apologize for the slow kitchen. Send the manager over to my table if the kitchen is really screwing you. These things you, as the server, can control.

McCoy prolly got what he considered poor service because he is a professional athlete and thinks he deserves the royal treatment service. There are some egotistical athletes that care more about having the entire waiting staff buckle at their knees and bow down to his almighty rushing skills than the actual experience in the restaurant. I have never had this awful service more than once or twice that people speak of, and I go out to eat multiple times a week and have lived in numerous states over the past 6 or 7 years. I think a lot of it can be attributive to peoples personality and how they treat the people working for them. As great of an athlete as he is, he sounds like an arrogant #####.
I won't comment on the rest of the post because I know nothing about McCoy personally, but I agree with the bolded. "If you run into an ####### in the morning, you ran into an #######. If you run into #######s all day, YOU'RE the #######."

You mean, you don't think it is awesome when they bring the appetizer out with your dinner, too? LOL

Exactly. Figure your own program out. Besides, many if not most restaurants require the server to tip out other folks in the chain as well. The world is filled with examples of others paying for the mistakes of another person on the "team". If the server isn't aware of the fact that my experience hasn't been pleasurable then it is on them. If my server apologizes for the fact that my food order was messed up in some way and is proactive in resolving the issue in some way, I am not going to screw them over on a tip.

But I am so effing tired of the notion that because I left my house to eat dinner that I am somehow putting out a waiter or waitress because I have the audacity to expect an enjoyable dining experience where I am actually served. You know, where I receive good value for the food I am ordering, treated like a guest, and have my needs proactively met. It is called a service industry job. Serve me.

Don't make me chase you down for a napkin or wait five minutes after you drop my plate off because right after you dropped my plate off I didn't even get a chance to ask you for something that I needed to enjoy my meal.

Seriously, where does this notion that just because I walked through the door I am somehow inconveniencing the wait staff. The arrogance and entitlement in this area is aggravating.

Just saw this follow-up from the owner of the place in question. If what he said is true, kudos for sticking up for his staff (even though it was likely a bad business decision).

A MESSAGE FROM THE OWNER:

I would like to address the LeSean McCoy tipping situation and our role in it.

For starters, I take total and complete responsibility for sharing this receipt. It was not our server's decision, it was mine. I am to blame.

I decided to take action after some serious thought. And while I'd like to apologize to Mr McCoy, I cannot in good conscience do so. I stand by my actions one hundred percent.

Mr McCoy and his three companions came into my place on Monday afternoon, and immediately the whole staff was excited. Mr McCoy is a skilled athlete and is one of our beloved Philadelphia Eagles. A true Philly legend and a sports hero. Understandably my staff was really pumped, especially on the heels of they terrific win the day before. (Go Eagles!).

Mr McCoy and his friend sat inside at a booth next to my management and next to me. They were given excellent service. Impeccable service. If anything, our server was a little nervous as was our food runner, because they are big, big fans.

He and his group, from the moment they sat down, were verbally abusive to our staff in the most insulting ways. The derogatory statements about women and their sheer contempt for the staff serving them wasn't the end, however. After Mr McCoy and his group left I looked over and saw their server, my friend, with his head bowed down and with a very confused look on his face. I took the receipt out of his hand and I couldn't believe that anyone could be so callous. Mr McCoy had left a .03% tip for our staff. Our staff that was beyond excited to see him walk into our burger joint and was excited to serve him. That's twenty cents on a tab of over $60. Twenty cents that our server has to split with the food runner and the bartender. Two dimes from an insulting multimillionaire.

I bet Mr McCoy is usually an awesome dude. And everyone has their bad days. But I'm from Philly and have had the pleasure of meeting many of our bad ### sports heroes. Ron Jaworski I met as a kid and I love. Iverson I loved. Mike Schmidt! You name 'em. I love all of our athletes past and present. Hometown heroes who treat those below them with some respect. And maybe Mr McCoy was having a "bad day" after his big victory all that, but the reports of him receiving "bad service" is a complete slanderous lie, and my crew here is better than that and deserves better than that.

At the end of the day, I did what I felt my heart told me to do. And I don't want anything from Mr McCoy, but...maybe an apology to his server who gave him excellent service would be cool.

Again, I am the owner and I take full responsibility for my actions. Eagles fans, I feel ya. Id be pissed too. But a man's gotta do what a man's gotta do and stick up for his friends.

Hate mail should be directed to tommy@pytburger.com. I will respond to you right after I catch up on this mornings hate mail.

Where are these horrible cities you people are going out to eat? My wife and I go out several times a week to all different places and the service is usually fine. Seems like many of you are sitting there looking for things to get pissed off about or you're just cheap.

If true, then McCoy is a POS who should be ashamed. He's on his way having a tipping rep as bad as Tiger and MJ.

IF true, the Eagles should probably send him over with a few jerseys and some miscellaneous Eagles merchandise to smooth things over. Probably won't happen, but that'd be a nice thing to do.

What is really galling is these guys could just have a blanket policy of $100 or 50% tip, whichever is greater, and never feel it in their wallet whatsoever. It would be the equivalent of a normal person only tipping 5 cents. And that measly sum would make that lowly server's day, and give them a cool story to tell. Why go out of your way to be a complete turd of a human being?

I think the owner owes Mr. McCoy an appology. It was not a 0.03%, it was a 0.3% tip.

Probably some other Eagle or two will quietly do just that and leave a massive tip, and tell them not to publicize it. That's what I would do.

Damn...guess I need to unload Shady if it's not too late.

Sorry... if you're a normal person you leave a tip every time. If you want make a point leave 10%.

You'd have to be a complete ####### to stiff minimum wage waitstaff if you're making millions.
I am so sick and tired of this entitled bull#### mentality. If I get crappy service, why the hell should I leave a tip? If I wanted lousy service or lousy food, I would make my own damn dinner.
Lousy food has nothing to do with your server.
Yes it does. Are you telling me the server does not know the difference between food that has been sitting and is cold vs. food that came fresh off the line?
He didn't say cold.
So what? I go to a restaurant to get served food that isn't crappy. My overall experience is reflected in my tip. It's not my responsibility to determine which individual in the chain of service should be blamed or rewarded.
Exactly. Figure your own program out. Besides, many if not most restaurants require the server to tip out other folks in the chain as well. The world is filled with examples of others paying for the mistakes of another person on the "team". If the server isn't aware of the fact that my experience hasn't been pleasurable then it is on them. If my server apologizes for the fact that my food order was messed up in some way and is proactive in resolving the issue in some way, I am not going to screw them over on a tip.But I am so effing tired of the notion that because I left my house to eat dinner that I am somehow putting out a waiter or waitress because I have the audacity to expect an enjoyable dining experience where I am actually served.

Yes, the servers are definitely the arrogant and entitled ones here.

Where are these horrible cities you people are going out to eat? My wife and I go out several times a week to all different places and the service is usually fine.
Same here. 99% of the time the service is fine. When it is not, someone needs to know. The waitstaff is my point of interaction with the restaurant. I don't talk to the guy that buys the produce. I don't deal with the guy that unloads the beverage trucks. I don't even speak with the chef. Everything flows through the waitstaff, including my money. In the 20% of occasions where things are exemplary, I let them know by thanking them and tipping even more than the standard 20%. During the 1% of the times when things are terrible, I similarly let them know with my words and my money.
Seems like many of you are sitting there looking for things to get pissed off about or you're just cheap.
Yeah, those are the only other possibilities.

Judging by the posts here, there is an epidemic of bad service in restaurants these days. I asked the question, where are these people eating? It hasn't been my experience.

Am I the only one who doesn't buy the owner's story, at least in full? I'm guessing this isn't the first time McCoy and his friends have been at a restaurant. If he was the type of person who would tip 20 cents on what was IMPECCABLE service (which is obviously so far beyond bad service, it's simply a "#### you"), I'm guessing we would have heard a bit more about him in this regard in the past. For example, the recent Warren Sapp story about the non-tip because he was called "boy" by his waitress. Not many people were surprised that he did that, and that he found a way to misconstrue "how are you boys doing?" which is a very casual, normal greeting and turned it into something slavery-related.

I haven't seen anyone say that every time they go out service is terrible, but it happens.

But yeah, if everyone on the highway is going the wrong direction...

Why is the assumption that those of us who bemoan the entitled nature of some servers and express their willingness to tip accordingly assumed to somehow have bad experiences 99% of the time we eat out? Some of you act like we go around looking for straw wrappers on the floor so we can stiff the waitress. Most of the time service is decent, nothing exceptional. You get 15-20%. If your service is exceptional you get 20% plus tip, plus a kudos to the manager thanking them for having a great employee, etc. In those rare times when you get crappy service, then you get what you get. I don't really understand the mentality of some people who think less than mediocre service warrants tip amounts that is customarily reserved for good service.

There are a whole host of other services you pay for where if you received mediocre service, you would never even consider paying full price, tipping, etc. But somehow, we are supposed to act like every server in the food service industry is a humanitarian entitled to a handout so that they can go feed children at the homeless shelter.

Was judging by the level of outrage. This is always such a contentious issue, restaurants should just add an 18% service fee to every check and be done with it. Most people wouldn't care, and those who did could stay home.

I find it suspect that after he basically threw a can of gasoline on his business that he waits until after the fall out to go into McCoy's behavior, etc. What is more likely in this situation, a millionaire who is supposedly greeted by fawning fans who are so enamored with him being a hometown hero that they answer his every beck and call who subsequently leaves a terrible tip...or, a business owner who thought he might whip up some free publicity (any publicity is good publicity, right?)?

I guess I've never encountered a server who I felt had an attitude of entitlement. How would I even tell? And if poor service is so rare, why the outrage? It sounds like you're with the majority who usually gets good service and tips the customary amount.

It's much easier to believe they got good service than bad. Say what you want about Philly fans (and I have) but they love their sports teams.

Arrogance and entitlement can generate pretty high levels of aggravation in others. Absolutely boggles my mind the evolution of the tip mentality in this country over the last 20 years. Hell, you probably go into the self serve yogurt joint, grab your own cup, pour your own yogurt, add your own toppings and then manage to pull your own wallet out to pay and feel obligated to leave a tip at the counter.

I personally think it is much easier to believe that they weren't even aware that he was who he was until after the bad service/name on receipt than to believe that a millionaire is going to stiff a hometown restaurant joint where they were supposedly being treated like royalty. But who knows.

Just my experience caddying at a country club in CT -- the richer and more elite the golfer, the less the tip. Seriously, the level of variation was less than 5%. The handful of members who were the salt of the earth types, and the membership was their one big luxury in life, tipped huge. They also were the least demanding. The whales wanted you to pick every speck of dirt out of the grooves in every clubface, haul their clubs out to their Rolls and Bentleys, you name it. And literally tip you $2 for 5 hours of chasing their crappy shots into the woods. They'd get pissed if they had to break out a new ball. And seriously, how many times have we heard about famous people treating underlings like garbage? There is nothing at all surprising about this story IMO.

Seems like you go through life thinking everyone is trying to rip you off or something. I'm annoyed by the trend of tip jars at walk-up places too. Guess what, I usually don't tip, and nobody cares. If they're exceptionally nice or I'm in a great mood, I'll throw a dollar in there.
