LaGarrette Blount (1 Viewer)

Glad we're back on topic. Here is my take on the Rams game:- This game was really a tale of 2 halves for Blount.- In the 1st half he was not in on a very high percentage of snaps. The few runs he had were impressive. A few were called back for oline penalties. This would be a recurring theme throughout the day. The offense seemed bent on passing and they sputtered scoring only 2 field goals.- Lumpkin got in early and got the call on a 3rd and one which he blew miserably. From the look of the blocking on the play, Blount would have converted easily. This must have stuck in Morris's mind because we never saw Lumpkin again.- The 2nd half Blount was in from the 1st play. The offense seemed to go through him on 1st and 2nd down. He really was impressive. Again a couple of runs were called back for stupid penalties. One run was a gem for 46 yards. He only came out on obvious passing downs.- The offense didn't JUST run when he was in. By my count they passed at least 6 times during his snaps. He did pick up a blitz once. Once he ran a clear out pattern but Freeman never looked his way and ended up scrambling. Most of the time he would sneak thru the line and become the dumpoff man. He never got a pass.- The two drives he was in went for 2 more field goals but they should have gotten more. They kept shooting themselves in the foot with stupid penalties. Seemed like several times he would bust a nice run only to have it called back. The next play Williams would come in because it was 1st and 15 or 20.- The last drive for the win he never saw the field. In fact, I'm not sure if they ran more than once or twice but it was out of a passing formation.- Williams was a non-factor in the game except for the final drive which was all passing.- The offense looked much better when Blount was the focal point. If not for stupid penalties they may have dominated. - It seems to me that Blount's role would be similar to Cedric Benson's going forward. That is, of course, dependent on Morris.
From the sounds of things, a scenario where the Bucs go down a couple TDs early and must turn pass-happy could make for a disastrous fantasy week for Blount.
Yes. Hopefully he is in the gameplan going forward. But if they are pushed out of that gameplan and need to pass alot to catch up, he probably wouldn't be a part of that. Evidenced by the fact they had at least 4 minutes to score the go ahead touchdown this week and chose not to include him at all.He is still very new to this team though and my guess is he will become more and more an integral part. But how often is Benson in when the Bengals need to play catch up?

It’s funny that you mention Benson. When the Bucs beat the Bengals up in Cincinnati, all the local sports talk guys were thanking Marvin Lewis for not having a brain. Benson was chewing up the Bucs, and then Marvin decided to abandon the run.I don’t think Raheem Morris will do likewise. If Blount is ripping off nice gains, he’ll feed him the rock all day.

http://newerascouting.com/2010/legarrette-blount-scouting-report/Pro Potential: Deuce McCalister – New Orleans Saints

http://newerascouting.com/2010/legarrette-blount-scouting-report/Position Traits

http://newerascouting.com/2010/legarrette-blount-scouting-report/Acceleration/Burst/Quickness: Can explode through a hole when he is moving downhill. A quick north/south runner that gets to top speed quickly when he diagnoses the hole. Does not move nearly as fast when forced to move laterally.

http://newerascouting.com/2010/legarrette-blount-scouting-report/Ball Protection: Runs with an aggressive style but does a nice job of keeping the ball tight to his body.

http://newerascouting.com/2010/legarrette-blount-scouting-report/Elusiveness/Feet/Agility: Has surprising ability to make himself small and miss the meat of a hit. Can slither his way out of a tackle and keep him momentum moving forward. Does look stiff in space, does not always make the effort to miss a tackle. Has light feet for a 240+ pound back.

http://newerascouting.com/2010/legarrette-blount-scouting-report/Pass Catching: Just four receptions in his two years at Oregon. Was not used as a receiving option. He showed soft hands at the Senior Bowl, but it was easy to notice the lack of fluidity when it came to running routes and seeing the ball in.

http://newerascouting.com/2010/legarrette-blount-scouting-report/Pass Blocking: A force when it comes to picking up the blitz. Delivers a strong blow and maintains the control of the engagement. Seems to enjoy this aspect of the game, willing and physical.

http://newerascouting.com/2010/legarrette-blount-scouting-report/Power: Strong and violent runner. Once he gets all of his momentum moving north, defenders bounce off him. Breaks tackles on nearly every run. Can get his pad level low enough so that the maximum power can be exerted to the defender. Uses a strong stiff arm to toss away the unbalanced tacklers.

http://newerascouting.com/2010/legarrette-blount-scouting-report/Size/Length/Hand Size: Huge body with a long frame, long arms. Carries 240+ pounds comfortably. An intimidating ball carrier at the second level for defensive backs to deal with.

http://newerascouting.com/2010/legarrette-blount-scouting-report/Speed: Does not have the elite speed in the open field, but he has shown enough speed to run away from some defensive backs. Reaches top speed quick, making him appear to be faster than he is.

http://newerascouting.com/2010/legarrette-blount-scouting-report/Vision/Balance/Running Instincts: Outstanding vision, locates the inside lanes quickly and gets in to them in a blink. Has experience in an offense that uses elements of a zone blocking scheme, giving the back the option to sit and wait, or explode through the trenches. Is a patient ball carrier that consistently makes the right decisions in the backfield.

http://newerascouting.com/2010/legarrette-blount-scouting-report/Final Word: When just talking about his talent and ability to carry the football, Blount is one of the most intriguing backs in the 2010 class. He is a powerful ball carrier that has the athletic ability to break one loose down the field. He has underrated speed and quickness and I’ve seen him make some cuts that very few backs are capable of at 240+ pounds. Like every prospect however, the intangibles/character have to be looked in to and unfortunately for Blount, there are a few red flags. The beginning of his 2009 offseason training involved him being suspended for missing workouts and struggling academically. The well documented punch to a Boise State player following the week one loss put Blount on the bench for almost the entire year. Considering he was a junior college transfer prior to his strong 2008 season, having just one year of Division I experience under his belt is a concern. However the strong week he had at the Senior Bowl showed the kind of ability he has. He will be a gamble but the upside is enormous, as he has the skills to be an every down back and contribute right away in a dual back system. Middle round grade that could be bumped down to the 5th-6th round area because of the red flags with his character.

"Stock Watch: Blount heats up By John Hansen 10-28-10

LeGarrette Blount(RB, TB) – He was inactive in Week 6, but with Kareem Huggins(notes) (knee) on IR, Blount was back in a position to get significant carries for the Bucs, and he did in Week 7. He had 11 carries and turned that into 72 yards (6.5 YPC), and he looked good doing it. He ran with power, and he broke tackles, so you have to think he’s going to get more opportunities going forward. They will use Cadillac Williams on 3rd down because of his blocking, but Blount could be getting 10-plus carries most weeks going forward, if not more."

nothing new here....

The Bucs are 4-2 and I really believe Morris knows he has to win to keep his job. He's going to make the right decision here.
I'm surprised Morris has such a short rope since the Bucs are rebuilding. I didn't think the expectations were so high for his team to win a lot of games this year.
He doesn't have a short rope at all. He may very well be one of the safest coaches in the league after this start, and Freeman's development.
ya, they've essentially turned over the entire roster and the future is pretty bright IMO.
I didn't say Raheem is on a short leash right now. But to be clear, he's a DB Coach turned Head Coach and the jury is still very much out on whether he will be successful. He lead the Bucs to a 3-13 record last year. I don't think he would have survived another 3 or 4 win season. He can't afford to leave any wins on the field.Blount Trauma is going to start getting a lot of touches sooner than later.

Just a supposed fantasy "guru" getting on board a week too late.

"The Glazers won't leave him in there if he's letting defenders tee off on their franchise QB. I'm cautiously optimistic about his chances to pick it up quickly."I agree. He's a huge, powerful man with quick feet and pretty good vision, from what I can tell. Assuming he (or Freeman) recognizes it, no blitzing DB or linebacker is going to get through him. Brandon Jacobs was an outstanding pass blocker from Day 1, and he's no rocket surgeon, I assure you. Probably a better blocker a few years ago than he is now, in fact.
Freeman has been taking a lot of punishment this year. Partly due to poor pass blocking, but largely because they have had NO legit running threat to take pressure off of him. Even if Blount struggles a little with pass protection, I think the net of adding a running game that has to be respected will lead to fewer hits on Freeman.

From Rotoworld:

"Bucs RB LeGarrette Blount (illness) was added to the injury report with a limited practice on Thursday.

This isn't a major concern. Blount should return to a full practice on Friday in preparation for an increased role at Arizona on Sunday."

If Brown is healthy and starting... I think you have to go with him over Blount.I'm a Blount owner, but I'm still weary for now.
dude if you are "leery" and/or "wary" and combined that into a new word "weary" that is the most awesome post of the year!

Comments from Rotoworld. Despite what they say about the oline I'm still starting Blount this Sunday.

"LeGarrette Blount (illness, probable) returned to a full practice Friday.

While the rookie has an intriguing matchup against Arizona's No. 29 run defense, the Cards aren't playing as badly as their rank (just 4.3 YPC, five rushing TDs allowed). Blount will also run behind a line without three starters (RT Jeremy Trueblood, LG Keydrick Vincent, Jeff Faine). Their replacements, in order, will be James Lee, Jeremy Zuttah, and Ted Larsen."

Trueblood is the only one that played last Sunday. The other two were out already. Trueblood is a penalty machine. Coming into this year he wasn't a very effective run blocker either.

Maybe he's just tired and worn out after spending sleepless nights thinking about Blount's situation.

I think Graham will be playing this week as well. Do we expect him to be a factor as well, or is he likely to be strictly FB? I'd like to think HC Morris believes Blount is the most effective runner, but coaches get to see their players every day....

You're right. The 46 yard run by Blount that was called back was due to a holding penalty on Trueblood.

I don't think that Graham will be a factor. I think they like what they have with Blount. He has way more upside than Graham. That being said, Raheem has done some things that I just shake my head at. At the most, I would expect 3 - 5 carries and maybe a pass or 2. With a gimpy hamstring, I can't imagine they will work him much.

I'm desperate at RB this week and have C Williams as an option. Heavy TD league. Do you see C Williams getting GL carries??? He was in the GL situtation last week.

Only in situations where they intend to pass or run in a passing formation. For straight bust it up the gut goal line that's Blount.

GL will either be Grahm or Blount, most likely Blount. Caddy was only in because it was a pass-only situation with like 15 seconds left and no timeouts.

Still trying to decide between Blount & Fred Jackson....likely will roll w/ FJax to see how much Blount is used (Mathews rotting on my bench); Blount will be in play every week going forward as my RB2

Who is starting Blount this week?
I am forced to start him with my 2 starters on BYEs. I will be happy with 50 yards, but I will not be shocked at all if his final stat line is 7 rushes for 6 yards. Then I will curse the Shark Pool for yet another overhyped player who failed to deliver, then I'll end up cutting Blount for James Starks.

Let's see

McCoy - bye

Collie - hurt

Bush - hurt

Deangelo - hurt

Hart - Looks like Brown's a go

Yeah, I'm starting Blount.

rolling with him as my flex over F. Jax, M Williams (TB) and Dez. I think Blount's going to have a nice day today and if you don't have him on your roster, it's going to be tough to get him.
