Lambeau might need its shoveling team

By MEG JONES

Missed out on shoveling Lambeau Field last month?

Buy a link hereDepending on the snowfall overnight, you might be in luck.

So get out the Ben-Gay, gloves and boots and check the Packers' Web site today to see if shovelers are needed.

The Green Bay Packers issued a "Lambeau Shovel Advisory" Thursday.

Depending on how much snow accumulated overnight, there could be a need for snow shovelers at the Frozen Tundra.

The Packers were to decide at 6 a.m. today if snow removal is needed.

That's when shovelers can check www.packers.com or call (920) 569-7100.

If help is needed, shovelers - who must be 15 or older - should report to the Mills Fleet Farm Gate on the stadium's west side beginning at noon today. Shovels are provided. The team pays $8 per hour.

And a tip for would-be shovelers - previous snow shovelings at Lambeau Field were very popular and hundreds of people did not get a chance to work.

Those who did, got to the stadium an hour or two before the 300 shovels were handed out.

The forecast for Green Bay called for 3 to 5 inches of snow. The Packers play the Seahawks at 3:30 p.m. Saturday.

Wow. That is unbelievable. Is there that little to do in Wisconsin?

Lots of people don't ever get to see a game at Lambeau so this is there chance to get inside and check it out.

There are more than 300 people in Green Bay and they pay to have it shoveled out.Green Bay 95,000 citizens 300 shovelers.

No, they consider it an honor to shovel the stadium. Many would do it for free. It's a Wisconsin thing you wouldn't understand.

Indeed I wouldn't. Different strokes for different folks.

They'll need the shovels for all the BS that announcers will heap onto the viewing public regarding Brett Favre. I have to think that, given the casual, blue-collar guy he seems to be, even he's embarrassed by it.

The Seahawks reporter from Tacoma News Tribune wrote about seeing it in person in his blog:

I have to say, the trip that Darrin Beene and I took to Lambeau Field today was well worth the five hours or so we spent there. When we first got there, there was a line of about 200 people outside waiting to get in to help shovel the snow. I was wrong in an earlier post, they did not shovel the field but shoveled the stands. All those people got turned away because 300 people ahead of them already got the job. They get paid $8 an hour to shovel the snow out of the stands. One woman who Darrin interviewed as she was walking away said, "I would have done it for free." It was a great scene. With a wintry wind blowing through the stadium, it looked like a bunch of ants at work. What they do is set up these aluminum slides -- they look like a slip and slide -- from the top of the metal seats down to the field. There is a front-end loader at the bottom of the slide. All the people pick up a shovel full of snow and send it down the slide, where the front-end loader hauls off the snow. After a section is done, the people pick up the slide and move it to another section and repeat the process. One of the supervisors said it usually takes about 3-5 hours to clear the stadium, but the sun earlier in the day had melted some of the snow so it only took 90 minutes. I love the accents here. The supervisor's name was Bill Miller. Darrin asked him how to spell Miller. In a deep Wisconsin accent, he says, "Like the beer. The right way."
And a side point that intrigued me, though I highly doubt it's a scandal.
The thing that blew me away was that it is a public company but there are no dividends. Basically, when you buy stock it is a donation to the team. So I asked the guy what happens when there is a profit each year -- as I'm sure there must be. "It goes into a general fund," he said. Who runs the general fund? The board of directors. Now I am not a business major, but the fact that a board of directors gets free reign over a "general fund" that has more than $100 million in it, and they don't have to pay dividends to investors, seems to me to be a bit of a racket. At some point, the money has to go somewhere, does it not? I mean, they have a waiting list 78,000 people long, so it's not like they are in danger of losing money or going under. Anyway, that was the reporter in me coming out.

This is considered pretty good coin in Wisconsin.

Living only 20 minutes from Green Bay this is not even news. This happens every time there is snow before a game. This shows how dedicated the fans are to this team and why their will always be a special bond with the team and its fans.

Dallas maybe America's team, but Green Bay will always be Titletown.

It is news, because most of the NFL fans don't know anything about this. It's not new, but it's news. I think it's really cool that they pay the shovelers because as most have said, they'd do it for free. Kind of a cool story about a team that can't ever be run like this again. The team/fan relationship in GB is unique. As a matter of fact, Holmgren's granddaughters are share holders. Although I don't think they were in there shoveling.
