sorry if this has been posted already.

I drafted Jordan realizing he had a rough strating schedule but figured I would at least get PPR points becasue of the QB dumping it off to him ! Their line is getting desdtroyed yet they seem to be determined to try and throw deep ???

Is this Art Shells system NOT to throw to the RB , Is Jordan just being kept in all the plays to Max protect , or does The QB just not realize Jordan play for the Raiders ?

New head coach and offensive coordinator installing a different system than the Raiders have run the past couple of years. You've got to go back to '94 to have an idea about what Shell and Walsh have done together.

Shell doesn't really have a history of throwing to running backs. The most receptions a back ever caught in Shell's previous stint was 47, by Harvey Williams. That was 19 more than any other Shell RB caught between '90 and '94.

Here's an article from yesterdays San Jose Mercury News.

It's going to be a looooonnngg season in Oakland.

Raiders | Running backs to be involved in the passing game

Tue, 19 Sep 2006 10:34:42 -0700

Jerry McDonald, of ANG Newspapers, reports Oakland Raiders head coach Art Shell intends to incorporate his running backs in the passing game. "That's one of the things I wrote down,'' Shell said. "We need to get the ball to our backs out of the backfield. We need to do that. We need to put more pressure on the defense by doing that.''

I'll believe it when I see it. Glad he was writing something useful down other than his Wendy's order.

Would have been nice to make that adjustment when they were getting their asses handed to them the last two games. Glacial reaction time, Art.

News flash _ despite the 70 catches last season, Jordan is not an exceptional receiver. He’ll catch the dumpoffs and little else. His 10 drops last season were more than any receiver in the NFL, according to STATS, Inc. And he wasn’t handling tough chances.

The worst part is he has been wide open for a dump off several times and yet Brooks/Walter continued to look deep either being sacked or throwing incomplete. You would think that the Raiders would try to get their offense started by running some dump offs, but than thinking would be involved.

This analysis would be innacurate. Art Shell's Raider teams in his first go around threw on average somewhere in the 70 attempts range to their RB's with able QB's running their team. The only years that Shell's Raiders did not complete many passes to their RB's was in the years 1990-1991. Coincidently for those who don't remember, the starting QB for the season in those two years were Jay Schroeder. Schroeder was absolutely horrible at throwing the short pass...any short pass. Schroeder had a gun for an arm and loved throwing the deep ball. But his accuracy was among the worst QB's of his time. This guy threw a ton of balls in the dirt on dumpoffs and short routes.

In '89 the Shannahan (4 Games)-Shell (12 Games) HC combo completed 66 passes to their RB's with Steve Beurlein as the starting QB. With Jay Schroeder the following two seasons as the starting QB, they completed 26 passes to their RB's in '90, and 47 completed passes to RB's in '91. In '92 when Schroeder split time with Todd Marinovich and Vince Evans, the Oakland RB's caught 76 balls. In '93 the Oakland club had a horrible contingent of RB's under the guidence of QB Jeff Hostetler, but still managed to complete 60 passes. In '94 under Hostetler they completed 85 passes to Raider RB's with a slight upgrade to the RB position.

Granted these Shell teams used their talented receiving fullbacks to catch some of the balls in the name of Steve Smith and Tom Rathman. But if you research the passes to the halfback, one will see that there is no reason why Jordan won't see 40+ passes his way this year.
Talk about over analyizing.. Man I could barely get through that... Here it is.. Last year Collins was the type of QB that LOVED to dump it off to his RB when he got in trouble.. We saw it in preseason and it continued all year.. Now look at Brooks.. He NEVER looks at Jordan when he is in trouble. He rather scramble and run then dump off to Jordan.. Maybe it will take time but I think 30 catches is his ceiling this year. Sorry but if you took him based on last years catches you are going to be disappointed. I although thought he would improve on the ground which obviously the OL won't allow him to..

What don't you understand  about the writer claiming Shell and Walsh's system doesn't use RB's for pass receiving, when in fact they actually do as was pointed out by the statistics given. In Deuce McAllister's two healthy years as starting RB in New Orleans, he caught 47 and 69 passes from Aaron Brooks. That and the fact that you are basing everything on just one game (Brooks was injured week two) kinda deflates your "Brooks never throws to his RB" balloon.

And I don't see anybody here saying they took him based on last years catches.
It's not 1 game.. Look at all preseason.. The fact is he doesn't have the instinct to look for his RB in an emergency. Preseason is more then position battles. It's about how they play together. From last year I can tell you at least half of Jordan's catches were not drawn up for him to catch the ball.. Collins would drop back look for his #1 then #2 and if he was pressured he would swing it to Jordan. Now if you watched Brooks in preseason and regular season you would have seen he doesn't turn to Jordan. It's a shame too because they might have looked a little better. Instead Brooks pulls it down and scrambles. The difference between a pocket passer and a scrambler.
