Laptops at the draft (2 Viewers)

I have been reading a lot of posts that say owners are not allowed to bring laptops to the draft. Why? I dont get it. I commish a ton of leagues and I would never think of having that as a rule.

Why do leagues have this rule and what are they trying to stop laptop having owners from doing?

I get the whole info on the Internet but in this day and age, anyone that has a cell phone can get the info. Im just confused about it, please enlighten me

Some people feel it gives others an edge. In my money league we had three owners in one state, 8 in another and even on overseas and did it all via conference call. The three of us here had a computer and looked on it once in a while but honestly it should not give an edge if the owner is already prepared and is not reading out of a magazine as he drafts.

THE reason in my money league is that not everyone has a laptop so my league voted it out and also the commish will not let u on the cell phone when drafting bunch of #####s that are unprepared is what it comes down to,,,,,, but i sure would like to use my laptop for the DD during the draft,that what happen last year i brought my laptop and use DD and won the league so thats what brought up the argument LOL

oh well i will have to do a lot of printing things out before my draft day on wensday

Just because everyone in the league doesnt have one is the most awful rule I have ever heard. I dont own one, I borrowed one from my sister in law. In fact, I thought the laptop and DD was so benficial that I may go out an buy one this week for next year. (There is one for $400 at Best Buy) I dont know I just think that is a strange thing, just because not all owners have one. tell them to buy one and then you can bring yours

We had a wireless router set up at our draft location so everyone with a laptop could get on. Also, it was cool because this year the commish actually made the picks into our website so all the rosters were loaded immediately as the draft went along.

Exactly, I think owners are afraid they are going to be distracted by images of scantaly dressed women found on those lap tops!

Took my laptop yesterday to my money league's drat for the first time, used the DD, it was awesome how I had everything happening under total control...great advantage to have.....

We allow them. We have 3 out of 16 team owners using them and of course all 3 using the Draft Dominator.

I see no reason to ban them, especially if it is a money league.

Laptops at the draft are the best thing especially if you have DD installed. Everybody has their own way of ranking their players either by excel, DD or going by a list or a combo of these. Two years ago I looked at the laptop guys like that's overkill this year i used it and I will probably never go without a laptop again with DD

Back in '01, i was the only one at my draft who brought a laptop...and was subsequently the target of a whole lot of jokes that night...then i won the league that year. This year, 10 of the 12 have laptops.

Its just like the prep work that you do, its all in the interest of gaining an advantage. To not allow a laptop because its "unfair" is completely against the whole competitive spirit of FF

In my local leagues, that are very old school, I "do the commish a favor" by bring ing my laptop and sending him an excel file of the picks. At least that is how he sees it. It makes it very easy on me. Everyone makes sure I get the picks down right.

In couple of my local drafts, I am the only who uses a laptop. Nobody minds that I do. They all actually like it. After the draft, they ask if they can look at the DD team strengths to see how they did in the draft and see how other people in their division drafted. The next day, I email everyone the rosters so they don't have to wait for the commish. Also, I put sound clips and movie sound bytes on my laptop and hook up some speakers, everyone seems to get a kick out of these.

To say it doesnt give an advantage is false. This guy may not have done well because he didnt know what he was doing. Laptops by far give an advantage but an advantage that anyone can have.

I'd have to disagree that they give some big advantage. If you are prepared with or without a laptop, you will do just as well. In the pre-laptop days I tracked most of what DD provides anyhow. DD is just another tool to speed up the process, but for some it is more cumbersome if they don't use PCs often.

Overall though, a laptop is still only as useful as the information the user puts into it and manages out of it. Garbage in, garbage out.

We did have an issue this year with on owner freaking out about his DD draft order being all screwed up after a few in-draft trades were made... so if users delay the draft because they can't function competantly with a laptop... then you have an issue.

Gives you info at fingertips. Internet during darft is nice. Last year during my draft I caught that a player got injured during practice and was out for year. It saved me from drafting him.

You shouldn't allow a laptop to delay the draft at all. His problem for not keeping up. The only exception is if the exploding laptop causes a fire and burns the house down. In that case, the commissioner should grab the draft tracking mechanism (board, list, spreadsheet, etc.) and the draft should continue in the front yard.

Why do you say that. What advantage does it give?

Ability to do calculations faster. To find the player quickly when he's picked. To have a piece of software that shows you at a glance what positions other teams have already taken, what their bye weeks look like, etc. Ability to have the software find for you a player who has a schedule that is complimentary to the players already on your team.I mean, it's a computer. Anything you can think of that would be useful that you can find a way to do, you can do.

It really comes down to your league's mix of owners. If everyone is on the same page that if it's your turn to pick, you pick, then you should be ok with laptops. But if some owners think they can take 5-10 minutes to "research" their next pick while they are "on the clock"... your draft will do a death spiral...

I could get just as prepared without it, but the laptop makes it soooo much easier to prepare, ao why not?? Thats the whole point. To make preperation and draft execution easier. Its not like the computer makes the draft picks (or maybe in some cases they DO but thats another thread. )As commish, the laptop makes my job that much easier, allowing me to focus solely on the draft, much like everyone else gets to. Without it, I have to pay closer attention to make sure too many players at each position arent drafted, I dont have to watch the timer, etc

Not necessarily true.If you don't use the custom dropoff, and your league doesn't draft even close to ADP, then you're in for a major surprise.

Not necessarily true.If you don't use the custom dropoff, and your league doesn't draft even close to ADP, then you're in for a major surprise.

Ok, assuming you do and they do I do, and my team is always the "strongest", which in reality dont mean a damn thing.

nice!!I don't mind if people bring a laptop to the draft, if they want to type and look at graphics and pie charts and get online for last minute info, thats cool..they'll pay less attention to the actual DRAFT..

Pardon me for saying so, but isn't that a ridiculous rule, since nearly everyone has an internet capable cell phone? I can just bring my cell phone/blackberry to the draft, and go online to look up information on players, I don't need a laptop to do so..
