Larry Johnson refusing to report to camp (1 Viewer)

i hope those that think this is posturing & doubt a hold out are right...as to KC holding all the leverage because they can franchise him next year... whether he reports or not, that is a given that the team can franchise him in '08, so it isn't like playing 16 games this season improves his lot in that respect (unless he secures a guarantee that he won't be franchised as a condition for reporting, like nate clements got in '06... but than he can just walk)...unless peterson comes to his senses, i'm starting to think holdout or trade most likely, & latter not that likely...
 I see a bitter 6 game hold out to start the season. KC opens with Houston, so they might go 1-5 during the holdout. It's @ Houston though, so even that's not a sure thing. Are KC fans going to sit for an 0-6 start? Especially if it looks like the reason they're 0-6 is because they're cheap?

LJ birthdate 11/19/79LJ number of touches last year 447LT birthdate 6/23/79LT number of touches last year 429 including playoffshe may or may not be worth it, just noting that age and number of carries shouldn't factor that much (unless you feel LT isn't worth it either)

I am as big a fan of LJ as there is but I am getting close to decision making time. I can only franchise one player and outside of LJ I would only consider Addai. Now if LJ does not hold out I keep him hands down. I am just concerned about a lengthy holdout. Even 6 games would be a death sentence in FF to get 0 points from your franchise nearly 1/2 way through a FF season. What would you guys do if your draft was Sat. Aug. 11th?

If things are still at this much of an impasse by your deadline, you have to franchise Addai. Some would argue you should go with Addai even if LJ does play.

Yes, Addai looks like the safe play. I just am going to be pissed if LJ signs and someone else in my league rides him to the title.

Its a tough one if you have your drafts early. I have my redraft league draft this Sunday and I am almost certain LJ will be available to me at pick #9 due to the obvious reasons. I will be praying that someone takes him prior to my spot so I dont have to make that decision.

Thinking of trading McGahee and Randy Moss for Larry Johnson in a dynasty... not sure though.
if that's offered to you, take it and run!
It was not offered, I'm thinking off trying it (He has been shopping LJ) we start 3wr's and 1 (flex)my only other wr's are AJ,Evans, R. Brown, Cotchery, Steve Smith 2, Dwayne Jarrett, then a bunch of scrap my rb's are LT2, McGahee, Caddy, DeAngelo, then junk.

There are now two independent reports that the Chiefs and LJ are close to a deal.

Here they are:

Yahoo Sports

NFL Network

Keep in mind folks, this is costing him $14,000 per day [~$100,000 per week]; at this point LJ has spent nearly $300,000 on this little charade. I doubt he had even close to that much sitting in the bank in cash and he is starting to really feel pinched ...

It's coming soon folks ... LJ is in Camp before August 27, 2007.

I've got 3rd pick in a 12-team redraft, and this is music to my ears:fingerscrossed:

I'm sure his new 18-20 mil guarenteed bonus will more than make up for that. :nerd: In fact they'll probably waive the $300k.

Make that three sources......

Chiefs :: RB

Chiefs Close To New Deal With RB Johnson

Adam Teicher, Kansas City Star - [Full Article]

According to multiple sources, the Kansas City Chiefs and RB Larry Johnson are closing in on agreement on a contract extension that could put him back in a Chiefs uniform in time for their third preseason game on Aug. 23 against New Orleans at Arrowhead Stadium. These sources said today that the two parties had narrowed their once-considerable differences and a deal could be struck by the end of this week. One source indicated Johnson might be at Arrowhead for Thursday night's game against Miami. Publicly, Chiefs GM Carl Peterson said he didn't believe a deal was imminent. "I'm cautiously optimistic a deal will get concluded, but exactly when I can't tell you. I really can't," Peterson said. "I would say we're still communicating. Are we real close? Not from where I sit."

I want him signed as much as the next guy, but I need to point out that those are not "two independent reports". It's the NFL.com report, and a wire story on Yahoo reporting about the NFL.com story. It's still only one source for the story, albeit a pretty good one.

Uhhh, the sooner the better for the LJ fans...it's usually not too good when a RB holds out and is not in camp. Most times...it leads to injury and no championship for the owner who's 1st round pick goes to waste.

Multiple sources said Monday that the Chiefs and Johnson had narrowed their once considerable differences over terms of a contract extension and a deal could be struck sometime this week.

If Johnson and the Chiefs have an agreement by Friday, he could be ready to play in the Aug. 23 preseason game against New Orleans at Arrowhead Stadium. One source said the sides were so optimistic about a forthcoming agreement that Johnson might be at Arrowhead Stadium for Thursday night’s exhibition game against Miami.

I read this article first thing this morning. But if you look at Carl's comments in that article, it says the he is not aware of any deal being close. So who do you believe at this point? Is Carl just being difficult by not stating the truth, or are those "multiple sources" who are reporting this off-key?

My .02 would be on Peterson being difficult. This extension could blow up before they start handing out cigars, kissing babies and scheduling the press conference, but it appears that there's been significant ground made up between Johnson and the Chiefs.

This is how CP is. Until the deal is signed he will act in this manner. Believe me when I say you can't take CPs comments to heart, he is a master at this game, he's the Bilichek of negotiations.

Carl Peterson will say a deal is far away until LJ is signed, that's just the way Carl is and has always been. http://www.chiefscoalition.com/Forums/index.php?showforum=10

Take a look through the Chiefs board and you can learn alot about Carl Peterson, after sifting through the forums there you'll never believe a word out of Carls mouth.

True, and it really needs to be that way during a negotiation which is just like playing poker and which requires a poker face. Why would you want something any different from a GM?

The only reason i wouldnt want this from a GM is if it ends up deferring FA's from coming to KC, or being able to retain some of the good talent thats currently on the roster

Peterson can be a stubborn ####, but I'd trade the ability to carve a player's salary down in exchange for pulling in premium draft selections instead of his normal picks every spring.
