Lawrence Maroney (1 Viewer)

I wanted to gauge what peoples thoughts were regarding Lawrence Maroney. He didn't do much last year in New England's pass-happy offense, though towards the end of the year, they started to balance out the attack and he really shined (scoring at least one TD in the last five games). I guess the big question is whats going to happen with the Pat's offense this year? Will they come out gunning like they did before, or will they try to run the ball more? Maroney seemed to prove that he can get the job done with more than 15 carries a game (which only happened six times last year).

What are your thoughts? Will he finish top ten? or will he be relegated to RB2 land?

No offense, but this subject has been discussed at length in multiple threads. A quick search will easily reveal many of these. Most are quite recent.

sorry, didn't search. Just scrolled through the first couple of pages.
No problem. And, not to say this thread has to just completely die, but this has been an oft discussed subject and many of the questions you've asked have been discussed with multiple answers. Especially pay attention to what David Yudkin has said on the subject as he is VERY in tune with what goes on in Pats-land.

To summarize my position, I do not think the Pats look at Maroney as a workhorse back and I believe they will continue to give him 15-18 carries a game if healthy (like they have done the past 2 seasons). I also see their other RBs having defined roles and Morris getting a decent workload (10-12 carries a game) with Faulk playing on passing downs (which for NE is a lot). They also are still exploring other RBs to add to the roster, which would further dilute the opportunities for Maroney. I also think NE will again try to keep Maroney fresh and limit his workload to have him healthy for the playoffs.

Those suggesting that NE will go back to running the ball more need to look at two things: 1) NE did run the ball a fair amount (and did it slightly better than most years) in 2007 and 2) most years they did not put up huge rushing totals and were middle of the pack or worse. So IMO Maroney is splitting the pie and the pie is not a great one to split in comparison to other teams. I haven't finished my player rankings yet but I would guess he'd fall around RB20, maybe a smidge higher. I don't see NE changing their usage pattern or their philosophy, and I would expect anyone thinking Maroney is going to approach the Top 5 RBs will be very disappointed.

I already moved him in one of my dynasty leagues. I basically agree with Yudkin - I just don't see his ceiling being that high.

He's a RB2 unless/until he and the Patriots demonstrate a willingness and ability to give him 20+ carries consistently. He's worth even less if he takes a back seat once again to a guy like Morris.

I'm not sure he ever took a back seat to Morris. Here was the carry breakdown in the 3 games both played (and when Maroney was banged up) last season:Maroney: 20, 15, 19Morris: 11, 10, 12I suspect we will see a similar ration this year. BB will also not shy away from going with the guy that is more effective in that particular game. Morris also seems to have earned a rep as being a tougher runner and better suited for short yardage carries, but who knows if that is accurate and if the Pats will use him that way.

Sorry, that was sloppily worded. Morris got the valuable goalline carries that made him the hot commodity in the NE backfield while he was playing. I remain unsure how much of that was due to some grand design versus necessity dictated by Maroney's still-healing shoulder injury.

Ive gone on record having said Maroney is going to be a top 10 back this year. And that opinion wont change. Any ranking placing him in the 20 range is gonna result in extremely strong value for the kid this year. That offseason shoulder surgery last year had alot to do with how New England used him early and throughout the year. People who understand and trust that logic and draft Maroney will be rewarded.

 Just traded for Maroney in one of my dynasty leagues as I saw him as a buy low this off-season.

You gave up a draft pick? Probably Stewart or Mendenhall? And got a couple of picks and a backup Q? Good god. Sign me up. I applaud that.

The guy took Mendenhall and that was a huge surprise to me.... He is a D. Williams owner.

Well, atleast now he's got the backup RB spots secured in both Carolina and Pittsburgh. :homer:

Great trade for you, and congrats on finding a clueless trading partner. Unreal.
