Bears Pro Bowler ready to sit out season

Jay Glazer / FOXSports.com

Posted: 2 minutes ago

The standoff between Chicago's Pro Bowl linebacker Lance Briggs and the Bears is officially moving to the next stage.

"I am now prepared to sit out the year if the Bears don't trade me or release me," Briggs told FOXSports.com via cell phone Monday. "I've played my last snap for them. I'll never play another down for Chicago again." ...

Yeah, ok Briggs. At worst...he'd come back in time to accrue another NFL season.

I bet he ends up signing the tender after the Bears agree to not tender him again next season. This would make Briggs an UFA next offseason and give the Bears a player highly motivated this year.

They all say they'll sit out the year in March. It's in the handbook.

Name the last player to sit out a full NFL season.
Ki-Jana Carter, but I suspect this is not a candidate you'd agree with.
Did Carter sit out?? Branch gave it a run but ultimately played. Briggs will do the same. For the record, I think the Franchise Tag is borderline illegal.Imagine working under a contract at your local 9-5. You improve your skills and your contract expires (...and your survived your state's "at will employment" status). As you exit the door, your employer yells, "Hey...not so fast!".

I might be wrong, but I believe the Franchise/Transistional Tag is a standard write-in for NFL contracts. And comparing my job at "my local 9-5" to anything that happens in the NFL raises my blood pressure. :tfp:

If my company offered to pay me an average of the top 10 salaries at my position I would not complain!

Contract is the big word here. Lance Briggs may not have signed any contract with Chicago, but he is part of the union which signed the CBA. That means he has agreed to the Franchise Tag as a rule. He either signs his tender or he doesn't play.

What sort of collective bargaining agreement is in place? Get out of the union if you don't like it.

exactly. this is freaking pathetic. it seems like more players than ever are whining about contracts/salaries & all that jazz even when they're offered good deals.

Stick to the topic Cindy Sheehan!
:confused:I thought I did.

This is definitly on topic and it's true. Except the military doesen't pay you any extra for the additional time beyond your contract they force you to work for them.

He wants his 10 million signing bonus now before he gets injured
Hey may not have a 10M signing bonus right now but he does have, say, a $6M signing bonus with a $1M salary for the year right? And if he gets franchised again next year, he gets a $10M tag or smtg like that (top 5 avg of all players, not just LBs).....not too shabby uh?Oh, and he gets 2 shots at the SB too instead of rotting in San Fran or Cleveland or Tenessee with a 6-10 to 8-8 team.

Most ridiculous post of the day. The Franchise Tag was collectively bargained. me a river for guys that are often no where near top 5 at their position receiving a salary equal to the average of the top 5 salaries at their position.Lance Briggs should just shut up and play football.

You don't think Briggs is "near" the top 5 WLB's in the game?

You don't think he's worth more than what he's getting paid this year under a franchise tag? This is a violent game and he could easily get seriously injured this season (see an Ed Hartwell or Rosevelt Colvin) and be worth half of what he could command this year, next year. Also, didn't Keenan McCardell sit out until Tampa traded him to San Diego?

Is it just me, or did this situation get really ugly really fast? I know players hate getting tagged (and I think it's more about their having no say in who/where they play than the $ they get this year), but I thought there was usually some discussions about a long term deal before the "sit-out" card is played.

Out of curiosity, anyone know who his agent is?

Then maybe he should be pissed at his union reps instead.....Personally I think the whole union concept is outdated and a scam anyways. It's not like we live in the 1920's with sweatshop factories.

His agent is Drew Rosenhaus

How can you feed your family on a lousy $7.5 million a year?

:lmao: I take it Lance is so put out that he didn't personally bargain that he's going to forego all of the protections that the league CBA affords him as well?

I don't think that has anything to do with how Lance bargained for a franchise tag, which was a gift for owners. He and all the elite players bear that cost, while most of the benefits are spread out uniformly. (Not that I'm saying Lance Briggs is in a ####ty situation, but merely I don't see why you feel like Lance Briggs bargained for the franchise tag.)And yes, unions are teh suck.

Fairly sure he gets top 5 LB, not top 5 WLB. And no, I don't think he's a top 5 LB.

I think the only player in the last decade is Lavar Arrington. I also think he joined the PA at some point, but I'm not sure. He definitely wasn't in it a few years back.

What happened to them the following years? If I understand correctly, the Bears own his rights for one more playing year, not calendar year. If Briggs sits out the entire year, wouldn't the situation be the same as it is now? Briggs wouldn't have made any progrees and would be $7.5M poorer. I'd also think that the Bears might be able to fine him or even sue for breach of contract costing Briggs even more. Briggs put himslef into a no-win situation by saying "he played his last down for the Bears". In order for him to put in his "year" doesn't he have to play a certain number of games? If he doesn't, he can't leave. If he does play, he looks like an idiot. I am sure that if he ever becomes a FA he will find a number of takers, but this attitude will reduce the number of suiters.

LaVar Arrington removed himself atleast partially from the NFLPA when he refused to sign licensing rights agreements. Frankly, it would be fairly dumb for the players to disband their union, if previous strikes have proved anything its that the players in the NFL are fairly replaceable.

This situation was settled way back when Galloway wanted out of Seattle. A player MUST report for 6 games for a year to expire off the contract.

Gilbert got traded to the Redskins and was never the same, not sure about Williams. Not sure if they had the 10 game rule in effect at that point or not... Perhaps it was put in because of those dudes?...
