League I am in about to crumble ! (1 Viewer)

I had a draft last friday night with 9 other guys. ( I am NOT the commish ) - Total redraft/10 teams/ live bar draft/100 dollar a team buy in. We got 1 guy that knew NOTHING about fantasy football but when the commish asked him a few weeks ago to fill in the last spot he agreed. Said he would read up a little before hand and dominate us  .

Anyway -- with the 1.2 pick ( we drew draft position the night of via pick a number from a hat ) He selects Matt Leinart at 1.2. Not only that brags about it afterwards. the person picking 1.3 is totally giddy and can't yell out Sjax fast enough. I pick 4th and am actually kinda pissed becasue I have to make the choice between Gore and LJ ( I took LJ ). Everyone else was up in arms like WTF is this BS etc etc. A few owners cried imballance etc. Commish resotred order and after adrink owners settled down. his 2.11 pick come out Calvin Johnson ( bear in mind this is a REDRAFT league ). Poeple strat getting Irate again. I in the meanwhile and just :jawdrop: laughing.

Anyway we finish -- the guys team ends up being - M. Leinart , B. Favre - J. Lewis, F. Taylor , D. Rhodes , L. White , C. Brown, D. Foster, C. Johnson, M. Muhammed , B. Berrian , L. Coles , Rod Smith , kicker , Bears D ( 4TH ROUND PICK ).

All ####ing week emaiols are flying around with most of the people in the opposite division asking for their money back. I work with the commish and he doesn't know what to do.

Thought I would bounce it off the shark pool see if anyone has a suggestion.

If he paid, I see no problem. The big concern might be if he makes bad trades so hopefully your league has a way to reject them.

Wouldn't it be funny if he does indeed dominate the league?

Tough one - I would want to avoid a redraft at this point and just play it out. And stranger things have happened so this team may pull off a couple of wins.

The key is not to give an inherent advantage in $$ or playoff spots to the one divisions' teams for getting to play against this team twice and beefing up their W-L record.

To accomplish that, you can make the playoff slots fixed per division rather than have it based on best 6 records or however many playoff teams you let in, i.e. 3 from each division no matter what the records are. That way, the divisions aren't necessarily competing against each other until the playoffs.

Tell them all to grow up! Hell, their first teams were likely similar. The guy will get better each year, and I hope he beats the snot out of the ones that are #####!n!

I suppose the perceived advantage one division would have over the other is why they are crying. As Ted suggested, perhaps your playoff qualifying could provide an answer - 3 teams from each division advance. Also, with ten teams, I assume you are split into just two divisions of five. That would leave room for everyone to play every other team once and each team in your division twice in a 13 game regular season schedule ... meaning everyone will get at least one shot at him and those of you in his division will each get him twice, somewhat blunting the advantage.Bailing because of this would be much less fun than playing it out, helping a noob get hooked on the game and having one great thing to gab about all year as you wait to see who loses to him first. Good luck with it and good luck to him, hope he steals a handful of wins from those guys.

Congrats for getting a free 100 bucks thrown into the kitty. I agree you have to keep him from making bogus trades but aside from that I don't see it being a big deal. It's not like every owner didn't benefit from his foolishness on draft day by getting players who should have gone earlier. If the guy is sincere and wants to learn ff let this be a learning experience and try to help him out so he'll be more educated next year.

All 9 owners are in the same boat. This guy didn't just puke on one he puked on all of you. Tough. If the playoffs are 2 from each division then what the hell does it matter. The 5 team div. becomes a 4 team race. The 5 on the otherside are still going against each other. Or you can make the playoffs be Div winners, and the next top two point scorers, thus it doesn't matter if one team got lucky and played this team twice while another only played him once.

By the way what happens if the guy that drafted SJax watches as he blows out his knee in the preseason? Or a team in the other division loses his top two RB and starting QB and barely can field a team?

It looks like a real bad team but there are too many variables to say it lopsides the league.

Everyone here had to start somewhere... it's unfortunate that he didn't do any pre-draft homework. That said, just move on and make the best of it.

Maybe you guys could drop the "other division" and run a single 10 team division... play double-headers to even things out a bit. It might help ease the frustrations of all teams involved.

FBG's has a schedule maker here to help ya out :

Ten Team Schedules

Good Luck

thing is this guy also took B. Leonard in the later rounds -- would that be funny !

It looks like he actually made a few decent picks along the way. I would have taken Gore over LJ

No chit. Stranger things have happened in fantasy football. Sounds like the real problem is the rest of the ####bags in your league who don't feel comfortable taking the guys money.

Honestly, I have seen worse. He at least drafted guys all with a legitiamte chance at scoring some points this year. This reminds me of the "there is no way" trades in the AC forum. About 1/3 of the ones that look horrible im July are genius in Dec. Do us a favor and pull this back up at the end of season.

I wish I could remember all the picks, but a similar thing happened a few years ago in a league I'm in. Guy drafted just as bad, people were up in arms that he didnt know what he was doing etc... He never made a single trade throughout the season, and actually made the playoffs. Sometime you just never know how the season will turn out.

I agree this isn't terrible - it is just one team..and much as we hate to admit it, ff isn't all skill. Post back at the end of the season and let us know where he finishes!

I'm somewhat of a newbie,... but I've done my homework this year by reading Footballguys.com day in and day out,...literally. I have no idea why someone would be so upset with all the picks that he made. I know I'm still a rookie at this game, but only for another month. Poke fun at me if you want,... it wont bother me. Explain why the dismay of his "unorthadox" picks?

It's the money thing - the more people spend the more frustrated they get when someone seems to either a) not take it seriously or b) be a complete tool. Not saying this guy is doing either, just how most of the league may be feeling. Like he's tanking in the other division, giving those guys an unfair advantage.

Was ina $50 league last year where on guy in the 12 spot picked a team many thoguht was odd and a waste of space. made the playoffs and a run - team wasn't as bad later as it appeared when we first looked at it.

Things may be different in your league come Sept, much less January.

in part it is, as said, the money. in part, it is the division thing mentioned above. i.e. if you play the teams in your division more than others and you divison has a bad team, your chances of adcancing as division champ *theoretically* increase. and sorry, but some of it is ego. leinart, as an example, shoud not go in the first few rounds. therefore, this person gave up the chance to draft a better player in that spot and still get leinart later. and, in some cases, it is ego.some people who've played awhile think there way is the right way, refer to themselves as sharks, and think it is beneath them to be in a league with someone who thinks leianrt should be an early pick. others realize everyone has to start somewhere and that it is only one team and just go about there business. hopefully that's the kind of league you are in.best of luck! you'll learn a lot to help you here btw.

Putting it as simply as possible:Matt Leinart at 1.2 - that's 4 rounds too early, minimum. If he drafts Manning there, they chuckle - but it's not generating e-mails. Basically, even if Leinart ends up the #1 overall QB, he screwed up, because he could've gotten him much later.I really don't mind the Bears D in round 4 at all. It's early, but a dominant D pays dividends, especially in high-scoring elagues for D. I've won a title drafting team D in round 4 or 5, just going for as many positonal edges I can get.The guys in the other division neeed to shut their pieholes.

If they are still complaining, I'd throw out the idea of having one division. Take the top six for playoffs and then no one can use him as an excuse for not making playoffs.

My first draft back in 2002 without knowing anything about FF in a 10 team, points only league, drafting from the 4 spot.

1st--Daunte Culpepper (went to UCF with him)

2nd--Ricky Williams (was a big fan)

3rd--Ed McCaffrey (lol...so I liked him...a lot)

4th--Deuce McAllister (2nd year in the league with only 16 carries to his name...I heard his name once)

5th--Jerry Rice (All-Star WR, right?)

6th--Martin Gramatica (fantastic)

7th--Chad Lewis (what?)

8th--Miami defense (good Lord)

9th--Emmitt Smith (All-Star RB, right?)

10th--Tom Brady (did well as a rookie, had to do well again)

11th--Antonio Freeman

12th--Johnnie Morton

13th--Ron Dayne

14th--Adam Vinatieri

15th--New Orleans

Ricky and Deuce went on to have career years and Daunte threw for almost 4000 yds and 18 TDs and ran for 600 and 10 TDs. Also ended up with Peerless Price who caught 1300 yds and 9 TDs. Finished second just a few points behind the Priest/TO owner. I look back at this draft sometimes just for a good laugh. Most all of us were there at one point. These guys shouldn't be complaining but should be happy for the free money, although I wouldn't be surprised if this guy makes the playoffs and does well. Always happens that way.

I could totally see a scenario where this guy wins the league. He NEEDS 3 things...

1) Lienart makes a Brees-like leap in year 2.

2) An early season significant injury to MJD.

3) Grossman says "F*** the naysayers!" and comes back to post Pro Bowl numbers.

You look at his team and tell me I'm lying. As others have said, I'd love to see you bring this thread back up at the end of the season. As WTF as this guys draft was - he at least took players that he can win with if certain scenarios play out.

I love how other owners think they have the right to tell other owners what to do. Unless they are listed as owner of that team and pay money for that team they have no right to make any of the descisions for that team.

This is the correct attitude... there are no reason in the world for other owners in a league get upset that a novice pays his dues and drafts the way he/she wants.

The division thing has been addressed with the suggestions above.

Every shark smelling blood in the water is probably going to cause a trade problem.

You might try to head that off by finding out how committed this guy is and explaining the impact a stupid trade would have on all in the league. Dumping players might be mentioned to. These are basic concepts we all learn. Maybe give him the AC forum link to bounce off any trade offer he is considering to help him out.

Otherwise, sharks are going to try to be the first owner that gets his players (and not watch someone else do it.) Good Luck.

PS: I don't have a problem with his draft. Nice to have a crazy Ivan in the league. I ask the one in my league who his first pick will be this year. He says RB or QB(not Manning.)

Let me add that changing divisions is the absolute WRONG thing to do. Unless there is a rule requiring a certain amount of fantasy football experience that this guy has broken, which i'm 99.99% sure isn't in place, then you don't go changing rules about divisions after a draft has taken place. As stated above, these other owners can't say ANYTHING. The guy paid his dues and drafted. End of story. What's the difference if he has 0 years experience or 10 years and drafts the same team? He paid his money and drafted.

If you start making changes bc of how he decided to draft, then you might as well shut the league down. I've never heard of something so absurd as to change around divisions or schedules because a guy didn't draft how you'd like.

Should the NFL shut down the NFC North this year or rearrange the schedules because Detroit and Minnesota suck? Why should Chicago have it so easy when the AFC has to work so much harder to win?

 The wildly unbalanced trade that stacks somebody's team will ruin the league.

It won't be collusion, but it'll still be screwed up.

If the guy paid, it's his team. He didn't hurt anybody so far.......

I would watch out for the trades though, that is where people would have a real complaint.

If the "sharks" think he did such a bad job of drafting - why would they WANT his players. Seriously, I think too many people take themselves too seriously and forget to have fun with this hobby. $100 is not that much money. Certainly not enough to lose your mind over.

Your league deserves this disaster. The commish asked a guy who knew nothing about football to play in the league? Unless he's a good friend, that makes no sense. Why play with a stranger who doesn't know what he's doing?

I understand that anything can happen, and he could make the playoffs, and blah blah blah. To be honest, if a guy took Leinart at 1.2, I'd stop the draft, explain how absurd that is and hand him a cheat sheet. If allowed to carry on, I wouldn't take the league seriously and probably just get up and leave. This isn't Manning, or Palmer, or even Willis McGahee. It's Matt Leinart. There's a 100 percent chance that Leinart is there for him at the turn. It's a wasted pick.

I know that everyone can run their team the way they want...but I wouldn't want to waste my time with a league like that. I'm in enough leagues without having a joke one on my roster. Sorry.

What makes the guys who are whining think that their teams are competitive? I want to be shocked that a couple of owners have the balls to say another owners draft isn't good enough but I've run across enough morons not to be shocked anymore. Tell them to grow up.

Who are you to dictate when another owner is allowed to draft a certain player? Sounds like you want to play in leagues that only draft straight off an online cheatsheet. Who's the real joke here?

Here's another vote for eliminating divisions and just have the top 6 overall make the playoffs.

Other than that, who cares? Do the whiners in your league really proclaim to know how the season is going to play out? If they pre-determined where every player "should've" been drafted then why have a draft at all? Just pull the order and assign everyone players off of an ADP list or something. Geesh.

I'm actually rooting for the guy now. Let us know how it goes.

 Also, no matter how hard people try, stupidity will never be able to be legislated.FWIW, that team would have had some monster performances just a few years ago....maybe the guy was going off stats from 2002-2004?

If everyone knows who should go where...why even hold a draft at all? Would there have been any issues from the top half of the draft if this guy chose 10th and took the same players?

Bottom line is...he paid and made his picks. It's his team and no one has the right to complain if it was all done on the up and up.
