League Rules Reformulation (1 Viewer)

I am moving my league (10 team) out of fanball's Exit42, and have been working with league members on the scoring rules and roster requirements. Believe it or not, we all agreed very quickly on the scoring rules ( 1pt per 10 yards of performance, 1 per 20 yards passing, 4pts per TD pass, 6pt per TD) and such, but the bump in the road comes with roster requirements.

More of the guys want to keep E42's starting requirements (1QB, 1 RB, 2WR, 1 TE, 1 Flex, 1 K, 1 TM), while a smaller group (me, too) want to go with 1 QB, 2 RB, 2 WR, 1 TE, 1 Flex, 1 K, 1TM.

Their argument is "That's just the way we've always done it."

I want a more challenging league where I have to build a deep team. I already tried floating out the 2 QB roster, but the resistance was amazing.

I would love to hear some other pro and con/ideas for both starting lineups.

In a 10 team league you need more than 1 starting RB because the value of a top ranked RB (LT,LJ,SA) can not be offset by the other teams selecting out of the top 3 with a better combination of backs. Simply put it give to much of an advantage to teams drafting first.

Thanks, that's an excellent, simple way to put it. Exactly what I was looking for.

Our league went through the same debate 2 years ago., and we we split 5/5 on the issue. The argument that in a 10 team league you need to start 2 RB's got some traction, but then the argument that it wasn't fair to require 24 came up. The compromise, that has worked out very well is going to 2 flex players. Some teams start 2 RB's some 3 WR's. It has made the league very competitive (with the exception of a couple of guppies that would blow it if you gave them LJ and LT).

one league I am in uses offensive sets with 16 man rosters

standard

1QB 2RB 2WR 1TE 1K 1D

run n shoot

1QB 1RB 4WR 1K 1D

power

1QB 3RB 2TE 1K 1D

makes for some interesting draft strategy trying to follow what a teams likely "set" will be. Most people draft for standard set to allow for some flexibility, but the guy who won last year pulled off a run n shoot team at the end of the RB run by snagging two of the top WR at the turn.

One option for going with a 2nd QB that can help overcome some of the normal objections is to make it a flex spot with some other position(s).

One of the big objections is that there aren't enough QBs to go around for everyone to have 2 starters plus a backup. (Though numerically there are in a 10 team, it is still an issue in practice.)

Making it a flex solves that since a team can start another player on their bye week, or in emergency if their 2nd QB goes down. But in most scoring systems, the 11th-20th or 13th-24th QBs will outscore the other flex options, so the spot amounts to an extra QB.

My personal favorite right now is 1 QB, 2 RB, 1 flex QB/RB, 4 WR, 2 TE, and 1 flex WR/TE. But that's a huge change from what your league has.

You could do various options around what your league is generally preferring at the moment. 1/2/2/1 with a QB/RB/WR/TE flex. Or with a QB/WR flex. Or a 1/1/2/1 with a QB/RB flex and a second RB/WR flex. Or... the possibilities are pretty much endless.

Good luck with it. The more players you use in a season, the greater the role that skill plays, IMHO.
