Leftwich could be cut? (1 Viewer)

With the Jaguars facing tough economic times, they must take a close look at quarterback Byron Leftwich's $5.145 million base salary this year.

Once Leftwich takes his first snap in a regular-season game, that salary is guaranteed for the year. If coach Jack Del Rio has Leftwich on a three or four-game leash, the Jaguars would be better off cutting the quarterback now rather than risk having him as a high-paid backup.

When asked after the Thursday night loss to the Green Bay Packers how long he could stick with Leftwich, Del Rio said that was a "hypothetical" question. But if he isn't committed to Leftwich for 16 games, the Jaguars are risking a lot of money by starting the season with him as the starter.

Jeter,

I take that as the author suggesting it, not JDR.

ETA-I'm no fan of Leftwich at all and don't think that would be a horrible move in terms of the future but with no one other than Garrard really "on deck" I don't think it's wise right now either.

Somewhat related, but what are the collective thoughts on Garrard's ability to be a consistent starter? From what I've seen of him, mostly when Leftwich was out injured, Garrard seemed like he could run the offense efficiently.

The chances of that happening are next to nothing. The Jags would never go into the season with just Garrard and Quinn Gray. This sounds like someone who didn't have anything else to write about.

The Jags are in a tough situation - but I can't see them cutting Leftwich. No matter how much Del Rio supposedly doesn't like Leftwich.

Del Rio is badly mismanaging the situation with Leftwich. Trade him, or support him. But don't keep the guy and then undermine him at every turn. Very poor coaching IMO.

Maybe nobody wants him , he is a lousy QB so how could you get anything for him.

I see Leftwich as possibly the most overrated QB

in the NFL today. Having said that, the chances of

JAX outright cutting him before week 1 are nil.

Garrard had his chance last year. He didn't set the world on fire.
He didnt even make smoke. Gerrard is the most over rated backup in the NFL. He is not really that good. He reminds me of one of those Canadian stars that comes here and does nothing.

Leftwich isn't going anywhere. Garrard is a solid backup, but a very mediocre starter, at best. Leftwich has the potential to be above average if he can stay healthy and get into a rhythm again. He's put up some pretty decent numbers in the past, and he doesn't turn the ball over much at all. He may not ever get them to a SB, but they do not have a better alternative on the team.

I was going to post something similiar, but was beat to the punch.

Jeez I hope LHucks doesn't see this thread - maybe I should alert the Scottsdale police of a possible suicide watch at the strip clubs

Zero shot Lefty gets cut. They ought to move on the from the Reggie & Matt era first. Garrard isn't an NFL starting QB either. And we will again see that again this year when Byron gets dinged.

Matt Jones had an era? It's his 3rd year as a WR... as in being a WR a position he didn't play until after college. :football:

2 thoughts. 1, there's no chance he gets cut. 2, I cant believe he makes that much. He just made my top 5 of most overpaid players in the NFL.

He fed Houston 4 INT's last year. He sucks.

You mean the americans that come to Canada to play football then go back to the states.Anyways, the jags will not release Leftwich. But they might release Reggie Williams at WR.

There's no chance Leftwich is cut. This is just the lastest example of the kind of garbage Byron has been putting up with from some of the local media and fans since he got here. It's amazing how many locals hate Leftwich, and I don't mean they don't think he's a good QB, I mean they hate him. That same newspaper has blasted Leftwich in the past with articles about how he wears his chinstrap, the way he walks out of the tunnel, how he wears his baseball cap, and several other silly things.

A lot of teams (Bal, KC, Oak, Chi, Det, GB, Atl, Car, TB) would have interest in Lefty.
He is nt any better then what those teams have at QB, except maybe for KC and if i was KC i would give a shot to Casey Printers he looked real good ( Better then Huard or Croyle they both looked liked garage league QB s ) of course he played against 3rd string defenses but still they have nothing to lose .

OOOOOOOOOOK

Leftwich isn't going to be cut. Maybe if the front office brought in some WRs who can play, this wouldn't be an issue.

Head coach Jack Del Rio agrees with his starting quarterback that three games into the preseason should not be a time to panic, but Del Rio also told reporters on Sunday the time for alibis is nearing an end.

“You don’t want to get too carried away, good or bad, with how things go in the preseason,” Del Rio said. “Certainly you get indicators throughout camp and throughout the preseason games in terms of what you can expect. I don’t think you can just discount everything. We’ve put in a lot of work and we do feel like we’ve made improvement and I think the regular season is the proving time.

“I think that’s where things become much more important, much more magnified. Whether it’s good or whether it’s bad, once you get into the regular season, there really are no alibis. It’s time to get it done and we feel like we’re on track to get it done. We feel like we’ve got a good football team and that we’re going to have some good days out here on Sundays,” Del Rio added.

IMO Jacksonville has set themselves up for problems at the Quarterback position for years to come. They can't draft a stud Quarterback because their defense is so good they'll always win enough games, sorta like the Miami Dolphins post Marino. Also, they're window isn't going to be open forever their defense is championship quality. I think they should have tried to trade both Leftwich and Gerrard two seasons ago and drafted Jay Cutler... Then I thought hey what about this Matt Schaub fellow... But the Jaguars have made poor a poor decision by waiting until Lefty's contract will be up... They've known what they've had all along, a slow clumsy quarterback with a painful time consuming windup and questionable decision making who gets hurt every year who just happens to have a cannon for an arm. They should have parted ways earlier than this.
