I guess I just don't understand the, "Sure he's put up good stats, but he has a slow release" argument. What difference does it make? Leftwich came to a terrible Jacksonville team and was part of the rebuilding process. Up until his short season last year he showed marked improvement in his game every season after getting off to a pretty good rookie year. He's started 16 games over the last 2 seasons and put up 25 TD, 11 INTs and 3,300+ yards while going 10-6. This on a very conservative offensive team with questionable at best talent at WR. But he has a slow realease and is slow in the pocket? Isn't it the results that matter? As far as the reason for him being cut, the 3 major issues were injury concerns, his salary of 5m this season compared to Garrard's of less than 2m paired with David and Quinn Gray playing well in preason, and he and Del Rio did not get along. Leftwich's performance when healthy was never an issues. Another layer to think about when looking for why the Jags cut him is that Leftwich only had one season left on his contract. He and Del Rio don't get along, Jacksonville is a tiny NFL market with very limited opportunity to make money from endorsments, commercials, etc, and tough place to become a national star. The idea was being floated around that Leftwich wasn't coming back to Jacksonville not matter what happened in the 2007 season. If he played poorly or even average, the team wouldn't want him back, if he played well he'd just take that to free agency and get his money somewhere else. I personally think that was the main reason the Jags cut him. The didn't want to invest a season in him, have him play well and say thanks you very much and go sign with someone else. Better to save the 5m and give David a shot.
