Leftwich Named Week 7 Starter (1 Viewer)

How in the world anyone can be complaining about Harrington being benched is beyond me. The guy is one of the worst "starting" QB's in the league if not the worst. If Leftwich is 1/4 of the QB he was in Jax it will be a huge improvement.
If the line isn't blocking and the WRs aren't catching the ball, who cares if it's Ryan Leaf or Joe Montana throwing it? I thought he played, and has played, fairly well so far and his stats from MNF are absolutely not his fault. Lefty may be better, who knows, but Joey was doing a very serviceable job in there and unless Lefty goes in there and lights it up like crazy then it's just a change for the sake of change and not at the right position.

I wonder how many dropped passes Lefty throws before he gets benched. Say what you will about Harrington, he had about 6-7 drives stopped short by stone handed receivers. I doubt someone who chucks the ball even harder than Joey is going to have more success getting the WRs to pitch in and keep the balls off the turf.
My this sounds awfully familiar. If Vick were the QB, you'd be called a Vick apologist.

:o My biggest problem with this it's not that they made a change, it's that they made the WRONG change. How can you stand in front of the press and talk about trying to find a spark, and not make the RB change? ESPECIALLY after the Monday night game? They had 35 yards rushing without Norwoods big play. 35 yards. And you change QBs? Insanity.

As bad as Leftwich will probably be from a fantasy perspective, anyone think this could bump Alge Crumpler?
:goodposting:
I don't see why it would. Lefty has never been the kind of guy to dump it off to the TE. He likes to over use his inaccurate cannon of an arm and throw down the field.Crumpler is just gonna have to suck it up and realize he doesn't have Vick there any more.

Seems that Crumpler was always more of downfield type of receiver than a dump off TE....at least with Vick at QB. I think he needs someone who can throw it farther than Joey......Harrington throws a terrible ball with no touch. That's why receivers drop so many. It's high or low, or too fast...or too much air under it. He has his moments but that is it....I've seen all his tricks.

Hey, we'll take him in Seattle. We love us some Crumplers in the Pac NW and Matt knows how to use the TE. Brother Carlester was a long time Hawk and we have his cousin Shaun Crumpler "running" the ball for us now. Bring on Algernon!!!

blah blah blah..hits receivers in 2 hands..blah blah blah. These are professional WRs, many of whom had dropsies with Vick in there. With the money these guys make, if they get the ball on both hands they should catch it. The drops they had Monday night were flat out stone handed drops. When your QB is on the run and winging it he doesn't always have time to buter it up and serve it soft and in stride. But the drops I saw Monday would make even Seattle fans feel sorry for Joey. Of the 7 drops I saw, only one of them looked like it would've beena tough catch.

Obviuosly to me:

Rich McKay and Arthur Blank are going for the draft pick and save what fans that buy tickets they have left. I was thinking that Petrino has to be the worst coach in history to pull the stuff he has done in and around the locker room and playing field, but now I am thinking Crumpler was right and there is a MAJOR shift in thinking on saving this season. It will only be to sell tickets and the drops by the WR's just maybe they subconsciously or consciously did not give a s### any more.

That being said it is a shot in the dark who will be a fantasy risk or not. I say bump Norwood and Robinson as they are McKay's and Petrino's newest gadgets. Leftwich was given his shot because he was becoming poison in the locker room himself and he just wants this one year to prove himself. (BTW none of the other 31 GM's wanted Lefty this season)

Algernon!? Sounds like a villain from the PowerRangers.

here comes the drama with the man who calls himself "the slowest black quarterback".

If you ask me, he will do worse in Atlanta than Jax as Jax does a better job in actually catching footballs and protecting their QB.

I find it difficult to believe that they're tanking the season, but I haven't got a better explanation. Is there any room on the Patriots bandwagon?

I'm also wondering if Crumpler might be a huge buy low potential (back to back 0 pt weeks). Any thoughts?
If you're buying, I'm selling. The guy is worthless this season regardless of where the blame lies. The strategy of waiting for a TE kicked me square in the jimmy this year.

Am i reading things right in this thread?

The majority are actually pulling for one of the worst starting QB's in the history of the NFL to keep the job when he's failed with 3 teams now.

Leftwich has had a winning record and better passing numbers across the board over Harrington.

I keep thinking i'm in the twilight zone or something when i read this thread.

I hear ya, but Leftwich was cut for a reason. I'm only saying that of the three, Joey is the best option. I actually wanted them to make a move for Derek Anderson before the season started, while the Browns still thought Frye might be worth something.

As I understand it Lefty was cut because he didn't get along with Del rio. Not to mention harrington has been cut not by one team but two teams. I have to agree that it's ridicuous for ppl to act as if harrington was a godsend and leftwhich is a scrub. I don't know if lefty is the answer but IMO there's no question he's a better option than harrington. The only thing I wonder about is why it took them so long to make the switch. BTW redmon did have a 4,000 yard season in the year petrino was his qb coach so I'd keep an eye on him also.

Joey Harrington has a fairly large sample set to look at and his numbers are not just bad, they are horrendous.Leftwich has at least played respectable. In no way is Joey harrington a better option.

And what reason was that?

He was injured constantly, he has a horribly slow release, and he's completely immobile in the pocket. I've also heard a lot of people say he's not terribly accurate to boot, but I haven't watched that closely. Sunday against the Titans would seem to support that.

Yes, Leftwich has had better stats, he's also played on a better team. I'm no Jags expert, but I'd say their D has been responsible for as many or more wins than Leftwich. Don't read into this that I'm the Joey fan club president. IMO, he's the better option if, for nothing else, having learned the offense all pre-season.

I will say this. Maybe Leftwich's ability to throw downfield will open up the run lanes and let Petrino do more with the offense. I hope so, but I'm not holding my breath. I think we're more likely to see him limping off the field before halftime after having memorized the SuperDome ceiling.

I guess I just don't understand the, "Sure he's put up good stats, but he has a slow release" argument. What difference does it make? Leftwich came to a terrible Jacksonville team and was part of the rebuilding process. Up until his short season last year he showed marked improvement in his game every season after getting off to a pretty good rookie year. He's started 16 games over the last 2 seasons and put up 25 TD, 11 INTs and 3,300+ yards while going 10-6. This on a very conservative offensive team with questionable at best talent at WR. But he has a slow realease and is slow in the pocket? Isn't it the results that matter?

As far as the reason for him being cut, the 3 major issues were injury concerns, his salary of 5m this season compared to Garrard's of less than 2m paired with David and Quinn Gray playing well in preason, and he and Del Rio did not get along. Leftwich's performance when healthy was never an issues. Another layer to think about when looking for why the Jags cut him is that Leftwich only had one season left on his contract. He and Del Rio don't get along, Jacksonville is a tiny NFL market with very limited opportunity to make money from endorsments, commercials, etc, and tough place to become a national star. The idea was being floated around that Leftwich wasn't coming back to Jacksonville not matter what happened in the 2007 season. If he played poorly or even average, the team wouldn't want him back, if he played well he'd just take that to free agency and get his money somewhere else. I personally think that was the main reason the Jags cut him. The didn't want to invest a season in him, have him play well and say thanks you very much and go sign with someone else. Better to save the 5m and give David a shot.

Good info. My point on the slow release is that he's going to killed, just like Joey did for holding the ball too long. Difference being Joey sometimes held the ball too long, Leftwich always has a slow release. Again, not a Jags expert, but I suspect the Jags O-Line is considerably better than Atlanta's.Again, my main point here is the Falcons are replacing the steering wheel when they have a flat tire. Maybe I'm dead wrong on Lefty, and that's fine, won't be the first time. But it's the running game that's broken, and saying your "looking for a spark" and not giving Norwood a shot to carry the load is just silly in my mind. Or to put it another way, you just put up 35 yards and you're replacing you're QB. And by they way, as to your sig: 2!

I don't think that anyone is arguing that. At least I haven't been. What is being said is that Harrington has not been the problem with the Atlanta O. Regardless of his past, this season he isn't in the top 3 problems with the O.

While I've never been a big fan of Leftwich, I'm a  is half full kind of guy.

The positive spin I'm hearing here in Atlanta, is the big arm Leftwich has & how it could bode well for our speed guys like White & Robinson. Apparently Lefty hooked up with them for some deep bombs during practice this week & maybe...just maybe...our O'line can give Lefty enough time against the Saints, to heave the pigskin for a few deep plays this weekend.

I'm also hoping Norwood showed Petrino enough in practice this week, regarding his pass blocking skills, to be a bit more involved in the offense this week as well. I love Dunn to death, great guy in the community & has carried the rock for us successfully ever since he's been here, but I think a changing of the guard at RB, is due.

Who stands to benefit/lose?
Roddy White. He's been putting up decent yardage (50+ in 5 straight games). If Leftwich can get him the ball like he did Jimmy Smith in the past White can be a pretty good option.

lefty > joey. i dont care how bad the wrs were monday. lefty gives them a better chance to open up the offense.
I don't see how if the WRs continue to drop passes that hit him in both hands. I am not arguing for or against Joey or Byron. I just think it's silly to bench a guy who continuously hit receivers in both hands. That could have been a good game, like it was in the first quarter, if even half those dropped passes were caught. I just don't see what Joey did, especially compared to how bad Lefty looked last week, to get himself benched. He is clearly not the problem on their O. No line, no running game, no time to throw the ball. And then when he puts the ball in a catchable spot he takes a big hit while the ball hits the ground.
Joey isnt very mobile. Maybe the think is that Lefty could just run the ball ala vick.

This makes perfect sense! After all, they're both black, right?

Hehe. Somebody hasn't seen Leftwich. He makes Joey look like Vick.

Has Lefty always been thought to be an inaccurate passer or is this based on his mop up performance? I just don't recall that being a knock against him. I never have followed him closely.

My comments were purely on the TEN game which, to be honest, is not fair. In the same boat as you, haven't followed him closely, don't know what his historical accuracy is. The stats aren't too promising, tho. High of 60.5%, Career avg of 58%

2007 Atlanta Falcons 25.0

2006 Jacksonville Jaguars 59.0

2005 Jacksonville Jaguars 57.9

2004 Jacksonville Jaguars 60.5

2003 Jacksonville Jaguars 57.2

Leftwich has a strong arm and can make all the throws easily. He's more accurate than most on medium to deep balls but sometimes has trouble with taking something off the ball in the short passing game. He also trend to throw a lot of balls away, which is reflected in his completion percentage. In Jacksonville, the WRs had trouble getting open and Byron often would survey the field and find no one open, feel the rush and throw the ball into the ground or over a WRs head or behind a WR. Some fans locally have seen this and decided that Byron doesn't have an accurate arm. But the reality(at least according to me) is that Byron often didn't want the ball close to the WR in the first place, he's was just getting rid of the ball to avoid a sack because there was no good option. Byron's biggest stength or weakness, and what may eventually determine his future as an NFL QB, is that like a Brett Favre, Byron is not at all afraid to throw the ball into a small window. He has no problem trusting his arm strength and accuracy on what appears to be dangerous throw into coverage. When Byron finds a WR he trusts, he'll continue to target that WR, even into coverage as long he feels there's even a small opening. That's why I'd keep a close eye on targets this week, if Byron plays well whoever becomes his go to guy would have a very big upside fantasy wise moving forward.

 The two favorites to be that guy have to be Roddy or Crump. Well, I still don't think I like the move, but I guess all I can do is hope.

Um, what? Leftwich is one of the most immobile QBs in the league. An unbelievably ignorant comment.

I disagree that White was the go-to guy though he should be. He averages only 1.3 targets more per game than Jenkins and they both have 3 red-zone looks. Harrington's propensity to bolt the pocket at the slightest pressure and inability to make quick decisions forced him to more underneath and intermediate stuff.I believe Leftwich's ability to make plays downfield and the ability to make better reads will help White the most. I'm tempering my enthusiasm however since all of these WR (with the exception of Horn, too bad he can be covered by lamppost nowadays) absolutely do have stone hands.

White did have some serious skillet hands, but has very few drops this year, done a really good job, despite a drop Monday night. Horn has joined the stone hands group tho, dropping a surefire TD against CAR and a key 1st down against NYG, among others. He needs to move to number 3-4 and give Robinson a shot, IMO.Interesting target numbers, I thought the targets were a lot more in White's favor. Catches certainly have been.

I don't disagree with all you've said here, but keep in mind that Leftwich has a winning record on what has been widely-regarded as one of the most physically dominant teams in the NFL the last few years, and that that team appears to be better off without him. Harrington has never been on a remotely good team.I still think they made the right move to go with Leftwich, but the gap isn't as big as you might think.
