Leinart Signed per MNF (1 Viewer)

ProFootballTalk.com reports Arizona has reached a contract agreement with Matt Leinart, the No. 10 pick overall.

Leinart is currently third on Arizona's depth chart but, as evidenced by John Navarre's dreadful play in the team's preseason opener, the Cardinals needed Leinart in camp badly. Head coach Dennis Green lashed out at Leinart and his agents earlier in the day, which may have spurred talks. Aug. 14 - 9:07 pm et

hmmm the way Denny Green was talking during the interview on ESPN, it didn't sound like Matt had signed. The pressure was definitely on Matt though to do so they way Denny was talking.

Like to see more details on this...

Cardinals | Escalators stalled talks with Leinart

Mon, 14 Aug 2006 21:53:23 -0700

Len Pasquarelli, of ESPN.com, reports Arizona Cardinals QB Matt Leinart's contract with the team was held up because of escalators in his contract. The proposal the Cardinals sent could have allowed Leinart to play in every snap of his first three seasons and not reach any escalators if he was injured for his fourth year and unable to play.
So, as people suspected, the escalators were (allegedly) the holdup. The bolded section is just ######ed. I wouldn't have signed it either if it's true.

This kid is key to the value of Fitz and Boldin this year IMO. Good to see him finally get in.

Anybody think he can jump in when/if Warner gets injured and not miss a beat this year? How much better can he be than Alex Smith his first year? I realize Fitz and Boldin are light years better than the WRs in SF, but I'm trying to evaluate how much of a hit his starting will be on these guys.

Pretty telling article on Matts deal

In the end, Cardinals officials agreed to an escalator package similar to the one featured in the contract of Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Byron Leftwich, a first-round choice in the 2003 draft. That contract, also negotiated by Condon and Kremer, stipulates that the escalators were triggered if Leftwich participated in 55 percent of the Jaguars' offensive snaps for two seasons, or 70 percent of the snaps in one season.

Under the Arizona proposal sent to Condon on Sunday, Leinart could have played every snap in his first three seasons, been injured in his fourth year and unable to play, and would not have realized any of the escalators in the deal. That proposal would have made the escalator thresholds the most difficult to reach of any quarterback chosen in the top 10 since 1993.
