Lena Dunham on Bill Simmons, 14 Jan 2015 (1 Viewer)

Even if she did, which I doubt, the response has been disproportionate to the point of hilarity. She's a writer in her late 20s with limited influence and she's probably second to Obama when it comes to being the target of conservative bile. You (following the cues of conservative blogs, I'm guessing) went at her in that other thread for stuff she did when she was seven. A seven year old girl! Do you really not see how laughable that is? Demonizing the actions of a seven year old girl? It's hilarious.
I went after her largely for her false rape charge. And you know that. Should we direct people to that thread?
Sure. Are you denying that you (and others) demonized her for her actions when she was seven? I may be wrong but I remember it pretty clearly, because it was hilarious and pathetic.

Becase here's the thing- no matter what you claim you "largely" went after her for, you lose all credibility when you attack the actions of a seven year old girl. Once you do that you're a joke. There's no turning back from that.
I think once you defend Lena Dunham naming a "college Republican" as her rapist when it turns out to be an NPR-loving Democrat, then you're a joke. I think that UVA thread might be instructive for people that might be a bit confused about our previous debate.

I don't think the way you presented yourself in this thread -- as objective -- is anywhere near accurate. You've always defended her, down to the fake rape charge. That's the joke. I think people in this thread that didn't read the other one might be duped by your veneer of objectivity.

Like I said, speaking of disingenuous jokes. Nope. Not happening here.
Almost every word I've posted in this thread is the truth: (1) I don't particularly care for her work, although I respect what she's accomplished; and (2) you attacked the actions of a seven year old girl. Also, I was right, it wasn't just you- it was conservatives, too. If wasn't just bloggers, though- the guy who wrote the National Review article did it too! So my bad on that, I guess. Everything else was the truth, though.

A seven year old girl. That was (is?) the target of your anger. Here's a bunch of other seven year old girls. See any other evil monsters you want to vilify in this group?
Like when I linked to the other thread, you kept defending her on the false rape charge.

Again with the link. http://forums.footba... dunham&page=6

eta* I love reading it again. Your obduracy is stunning.
I have no problem with anything I said there.

Here's where you went after the actions of a seven year old girl (not once but twice, and with crude terminology!). You as comfortable standing behind that as I am standing behind what I said?
Yes, absolutely.
Cool. I admire your integrity, if not your attitude towards seven year old girls (which is appalling). Have a great weekend and keep fighting that fight. Tell those second-graders what's what!

I never do this, but :lmao:

You defended a woman who issued a fake rape charge in her memoir. In that memoir, she also admitted she stuffed marbles in her sister's ###### and tried to "woo" her for sexual favors while admitting to masturbating in her younger sister's bed.

In some circles of the legal world, that might be considered abuse.

But you keep defending that fake rape charge and her subsequent legal settlement thereto. Especially when that rape charge was against a "college Republican" when it was -- maybe -- a college Democrat. And people also keep defending her indignant statement about it. This is obduracy and idiocy. Sorry for pointing that out. History now sort of proves you've lost the debate, and not much else besides casting aspersions at people who picked up on this will do you any good.

There are definitely two people acting like 7 year olds in this thread.
Honestly, that's too bad. I think if you dishonestly portray yourself as an objective observer of Lena Dunham when you've previously been in the tank for her, then people in the thread should know that.

I was willing to stay out of it until Tobias started hemming and hawing about (paraphrased) "have you realllllly listened to all of the interview? Well I'm not going to, and I listened to fifteen minutes, but have you? I have a harrrrd time believing that..." After rhetorical crap like that that I found it necessary to post his previous defense of her fake rape charges and possible molestation of her sister.

Sorry if that ruined the thread, but I think his posturing was leading up to a disingenuous argument.

At what point do they they discuss the rape controversy? I listened to the first 22 minutes and they seemed to only discuss the stuff about her sister.

The more I read about her, and listen to her, the more I dislike this woman. She was prematurely the 'it' girl for whatever reason, she doesn't seem all that talented from what I can tell, and she just keeps revealing herself to be more and more of a butt hole.

She needs to get over herself, and stop with the constant apparent self image of her in a world against her, but she is a shining light. Its tiresome.
I'm not a huge fan by any means, but I'm curious as to your basis for this assertion. I mean, she made a movie and created and wrote an HBO show that's now in its third season at age 26. That seems like it would require a decent amount of talent. I personally got tired of the show pretty quickly and long since abandoned it, but I'm not really the target audience. The target audience and critics both seem to think it's pretty good.
I am not a huge fan by any means, but I am going to defend her any chance i get!!!

Bet nobody can guess why that is...

I listened for 29 minutes and didn't know about any book or controversy and decided I prefer him talking to Cuzin sal more.

She's definitely talented since she's on her third season (not that I like the show, bailed on season 1).

Not that's it's a particular issue, but I have never understood the constant nudity on her part. It served no purpose on her show. It felt that because it was on HBO someone had to get naked to justify it being on cable. Then she wonders why there's such negative comments about her body on social media.

Listening now... And I have of chime in... But she's a dizzying mix of living in a New York bubble and being young and rich.

She's not the first vapid dense celeb but she is the subject of this thead and she also seems to think she's separate and above (but don't we all)

It does to me speak volumes about the two Americas we live in though. The fact that she had no idea about how she her words would be received and her sexual mores are going to be far more open than flyover country is just head shaking.

But at the same time she opines about "rape culture" and can speak at length with certitude about how these are such problems in this country.

I can't castigate her because she's young and stupid. But it is frustrating to me to see a snapshot of the disconnect artists that are in theory commenting on a time and place.

I dont know if she ever apologized to the false rape guy but she acknowledged regret while saying she was trying to "open a dialogue". That explanation leads me to hold the opinion that her pantomime is that of a liar on that subject.

Hardly seems worth worrying that much about though.

I could only get through about 15 mins of this. Simmons needs to stick to guests who can intelligently talk sports and gambling.

I happen to stumble in on my fiancé watching the show she is on and Brian Williams daughter was having a man face deep on the backside made me take notice for a second.

Girls is awful and I've never found her to be funny nor did I appreciate having to see her naked when I did watch that show... That being said, she found her niche audience and that supports her life so kudos to that I guess. As other's have said she is definitely in her own little bubble.

I love Simmons' podcast. I was searching for the Simmons thread to post that I was going to go ahead and skip the Dunham one. Turns out there's a whole thread on it, lol.

This is not a good look for Simmons. I heard they talked about her armpit hair? WTF.

She's 28 and insanely accomplished. Could be the next Nora Ephron. I can take it or leave it with her but she could be a major player in Hollywood for a long time. It's a great relationship for Simmons to forge for himself/Grantland.

How is she insanely accomplished? She's done one thing.

She has a show. And she's obnoxious.

I'm not sure that the show that has a weekly feature with "Cousin Sal" really requires a detailed analysis of a guest's resume before having him or her on. Simmons finds her interesting, so he has her on.

I've read this 5 times and I still have no idea what this means.
Brian Williams has a daughter named Allison Williams. Allison Williams is an actress who plays the character Marnie on the show Girls. In one scene of an episode of Girls, Marnie gets her butt eaten by a guy. Dirtyjay is engaged to be married. The person that he is engaged to happened to be watching the butt eating scene when dirtyjay walked into the room. He noticed that the butt was being eaten, at least for a second.

Now that is some good clarity. Thank you, citizen.

I googled Brain Williams daughter before reading this and now I'm actually intrigued to see her anooooos being snacked upon.

That's the worst part of the show. Williams is hot as balls but does not do nude scenes on this show. And Zosia Mamet, while odd looking, has gigantic tittays. Yet, she never shows them either.

Off course butterface+butterbody Lena Dunham gets naked with the frequency of a cheap ham radio.

Well, I did more googling after Fatguys post, and Williams does show a butt cheek blowing in the breeze, so to speak. So there's that.

I also made the mistake of googling Dunham naked. That was not wise.

Don't downplay this. That's a great podcast.
One of my favorites. I'm not sure what that remark is supposed to mean.
Maybe fatguyinalittlecoat will explain it for you.
Or you could since you wrote it. I'm sorry I don't get all of the references to everyone's stuff.

Cousin Sal is the cousin of Jimmy Kimmel. He has gained some notoriety primarily through being shown on Jimmy Kimmel Live (and possibly the Man Show?) So his credentials are essentially that he is the cousin of a funny, famous guy, though he may be funny enough in his own right. He is also does a podcast with Bill Simmons about once a week, as the two of them know each other from when Simmons was a writer on JKL. Accordingly, it seems silly to nitpick about the credentials of any guest on his show, particularly one who has written and starred in her own sitcom, as well as at least one other movie, when one of his most frequent guests has virtually no credentials of his own (not to mention that perhaps the most frequent guest is a lawyer who happened to be Simmons' roommate in college).

And thus ends the FBG explanation corner.

Oh, okay. Well yeah I knew who Cousin Sal was, I guess I just didn't get the whole "resume" thing. My problem with Dunham is not her "credentials," it's that I find her obnoxious personally, and she's not in the normal vein of who Simmons has on his podcasts. He does dabble in the entertainment/pop culture area I guess, but it's usually dudes and there's at least some tangential relationship or discussion of sports.

And I know he's known as "Cousin" Sal because of Kimmel, but I believe he is a comedy writer in his own right, in addition to writing sports/gambling articles on Grantland and appears on ESPN shows and whatnot. It's not like he's hanging out in his basement just being a "cousin," and even if he was, I wouldn't care. He's a good listen and they have a great dynamic.

But okay if someone wants to argue that Dunham has more "credentials" than Cousin Sal, that's fine, I just don't see that as relevant at all.
