After the Yankees miss the playoffs this season. A-Rod who probably would have opted out even if NY won the world series, does just that. He opts out and the Tigers come calling. He moves back to SS and Carlos Guillen moves over to 1st base. the Tigers would be the hands down favorite to win it all for years to come!

1. Granderson

2. Polanco

3. Sheffield

4. A-Rod

5. Maggs

6. Guillen

7. Pudge

Thats 3 first ballot hall of famers, 3 guys with multiple all-star appearances and a 24 year old CF who is leading the Majors in extra base hits. Sounds like a good plan to me.

What has A-Rod ever won?
2 MVPs, 2 Gold Gloves, 8 Silver Sluggers, 1 batting title, 5 time home run leader, etc. This isn't basketball; you can't blame the lack of post-season success on one player.
How were his post season numbers last year? As a Tigers fan, you should probably know. You want this choker to be paid 20 million per year by your team? It's easy to hit home runs when you are up 8 in the 7th inning.

The Yankees haven't been up 8 in the 7th inning too many games this year and he is doing fine. I will admit, A-Rod has been bad in the 05 and 06 playoffs. Prior to that, A-Rod was a great playoff performer. In 5 post-season series between 97 and 04, A-Rod hit .371 I believe fully that if A-Rod came to Detroit, he would perform just fine in the playoffs.

You guys are nuts if you think he's going to opt out.
why? that's Boros's MO. If nothing else he'll get 5 more years at 27 million per year from the Yankees. Plus, this is the year if you're A-rod to break the bank since he'll be 32. Teams are much more likely to give him a long term contract at some astronomical number this offseason than in 2010.

Do you even watch baseball? Or do you just read the New York Post? He's the only thing holding that crap### Yankees team together right now.

Why in the hell would he move to Detroit when he could move to Southern Cal? Beach house or Detroit.........

I think the Angels, Cubs or White Sox would be more likely to sign him than the Tigers.

He's going to whoever puts up the most money. Boras wants 30 mil per year, for 6 years. Whoever offers that first gets him.

He'll be in Anaheim if he opts out.
either their or the Cubbies and it'll be much closer to 30 million per year than 20 million.
I don't think there is any doubt that the Cubs and Angels have the lead in the A-rod sweepstakes if he opts out which I think he will. The Cubs have to be sold first though which I think puts the Angels as the clear frontrunner. He would fit nicely in Detroit and I think the owner would pony up the $$$ to get him. However A-Rod would probably rather play in California where his wife can drop a trailer with a moon roof in the back yard so her relatives will feel at home when visiting. I also think Detroit will spend their $$$ on a 1Bman at half the cost and take their chances. But he's welcome in Detroit, no doubt. :goodposting:

White Sox? I doubt that.
why? them being so awful this year may have changed things, but sports radio in this town has always inferred that Ken Williams would love a chance to add a player like that. I don't know if Reinsdorf would write the check or not though. With Dye hitting free agency after this year, they could use a big bat and they have an opening at SS.you really think the Tigers are a more likely destination for him?

Sox could be a definite possibility after the disaster that is this season. Williams won't sit back and watch this again next year.

The White Sox are historically cheap and the Tigers have a better chance to win in the next five years. You're talking about bumping their payroll into the Boston Red Sox tier. I don't see it happening. He's going to the Cubs or Angels or staying in New York.

A-Rod Chicago Speculation

The Chicago Tribune's Phil Rogers breaks down the factors involved that might result in Alex Rodriguez playing in Chicago in 2008. Let's break it down in a nifty bullet-point format.

The Cubs

Rodriguez played under Lou Piniella in Chicago, and the two are said to have a strong relationship. That's where a lot of this speculation begins. But won't it just come down to money in the end?
Third base is fully blocked by Aramis Ramirez, where shortstop is fairly open. The Cubs won't exercise Cesar Izturis's option, but will have Ryan Theriot around. No matter how much A-Rod's shortstop defense is lacking, I can't picture it beyond worse than Theriot's. Piniella might prefer to use Theriot in a superutility role with a focus on second base.
The Cubs don't seem to despise Scott Boras, dealing smoothly with him for recent signees Greg Maddux and Jeff Samardzija.
While the Cubs showed a willingness to sign a player to a ridiculous contract with the Alfonso Soriano deal, the team will be sold after the season. That seems quite likely to interfere with an A-Rod megadeal, even if Jim Hendry says it's business as usual. The White Sox

It's well-known that the team's brass likes A-Rod. They flirted with him in 2000 when he first reached free agency.
The Sox could make room at short or third for Rodriguez, as Joe Crede has been mentioned in trade rumors for some time and Josh Fields is no sure thing. The team seems likely to decline its club option on Juan Uribe.
Recent White Sox clubs have not gone crazy bidding on free agents. However, the Sox have shown the ability to pony up major cash. In particular I'm thinking of the five year, $55MM deal given to Albert Belle before the 1997 season. That one made Belle the highest paid player in baseball. Like A-Rod, Belle had a clause to opt out if he wasn't the highest paid player in baseball.
Unlike the Cubs, the White Sox have had beef with Scott Boras in the past. However, Sox chairman Jerry Reinsdorf said that despite their differences, he would sign a reasonably priced Boras client. Not sure A-Rod would qualify, but if you're going to spend big bucks you might as well do it on a superstar.
If the Sox are able to replace Mark Buehrle internally, they'll have some free cash to account for the difference between Jermaine Dye's and Rodriguez's salaries. I would view A-Rod as Dye's replacement in the lineup.I have to give the edge to the White Sox here, as the Cubs will likely be in a state of flux next winter. The Sox seem to be leaning toward rebuilding, though, and I don't think a $100MM+ contract fits the plan. There should be plenty more speculation over the next several months but I don't expect Rodriguez to land in Chicago.
A-Rod Mania

Joel Sherman of the New York Post plays the greed angle, as if most baseball players, and people in general, shouldn't want to maximize their earnings. Sherman thinks Rodriguez is destined to play for the Angels or White Sox, wanting to stay in the AL. Never say never, but the day Kenny Williams negotiates an eight-year deal with Scott Boras...well, let's just say it's a long shot. But Sherman lays out a scenario I also expect: Boras asks the Yankees to extend his contract, they refuse, and that is the justification for the third baseman's departure.
:X I still think the White Sox are more likely than the Tigers.

Surprised no mention of SF. Heard they would be after him hot and heavy from somebody recently.
I have heard and read the same thing about SF, they would break the bank for him. If only the Phillies owners had any balls or care to land a megastar, he would hit 80 playing in our sandbox.

Several Tigers have Boras as an agent and the reason the Tigers drafted Rick Porcello is because many of the other teams have difficulty dealing with Boras. Dave Dombrowski has a long standing good relationship with him. Kenny rogers, I-Rod, Jeff Larish, Bobby Seay, Andrew Miller, Mags, Miner and Porcello are all in Boras' camp. I think the White Sox have one in Joe Crede. Scott Boras is going to decide where A-Rod goes and I think Kenny Williams is going to have to forgive and forget. Same with Boras. The chance of him landing in Detroit is small but all the speculation of guys like Phil Rogers trying to fill lines in Chicago papers (which said the same thing I said about the sale of the Cubs being an issue) isn't going to matter when Boras is involved. I'd say on that alone the Tigers would have an advantage but I'm not even sure Dombrowski wants him or that the Tigers would make that kind of financial commitment to one player. There are only two teams with the money, an ability to deal with Boras' and the desire to sign A-Rod and they are the Yankees and Angels. All the others have issues but I think A-Rod would be more likely to end up in a Red Sox uniform before a White Sox uniform.

Don't worry William Penn won't allow it...

I'd be surprised if he ends up anywhere but with the Yanks or the Angels next season. If Arod wants out of NY then Angels would be the softest landing spot. The Anaheim fans will worship him and from what I hear Moreno is a big fan as well. He stays in the AL and is on a stocked team. Plus it's a friendly hitting park. Arod is in a groove and in a walk year I can't see him agreeing to a move mid-season.

A-Rod talked up the city quite a bit a few weekends ago during the SF/NYY series. Why not put ARod at 3B if he goes to Detroit? Guillen at first is a terrible idea.

I didn't get that part of the idea either but forgot to mention it. Casey+Guillen > Guillen+Inge.
Inge is a gold glove caliber fielder who hits home runs. He's gonna be at 3B for awhile in Detroit and with the rest of the line-up he is not going to be asked to do too much except field his position better than most, hit 9th, and come up with an occasional big hit which he does. Guillen has leg issues and throwing issues. He'd be better off at 1B. SF would also be a place of interest for sure if they put the money up.

On Inge....

He's 5th in the AL among 3bman in OPS, 4th in OBP, 5th in runs created per 9, and 3rd in BABIP. Because of the injury to his foot he's had some issues with range but he has a career average at 3B that is .6 above the league average and compares very well with the best fielding 3Bman in the game.

On Casey....

He's 8th in the league among 1bman in OPS, last in HRs, 2nd in BABIP, 2nd in average. He's a good fielder not great, he's the slowest man in baseball, and he's the nicest guy in the world. He also fits well with the team doing what he needs to do.

3B is harder to find a good fielder at though and 1B should have better production. Casey is 17th among major league 1Bman in OPS Inge is 13th among 3Bman. In this day in age it's easier to find someone to play first to bump that production and the Tigers have both Sheffield and Guillen who can play 1B now and a host of options in the coming years with players becomming free agents. Both Casey and Inge are valuable to the Tigers Casey is less valuable as an individual player because of the position he plays. Casey's VORP is 2.4 while Inge's VORP is 13.4. That is a big difference.

Exactly why I would love it if they could land Teixeira.

No doubt in my mind Boras & Arod opt out.

He'll be looking for 30 milion per year and some team will give it to him.

My guess is the Angels.

If A-Rod leaves New York, his legacy will be the media crafted image of the big fish in the small pond that could never make it at the highest level.

I think he stays in New York.

Anyone see this from the ESPN Rumors section?

Jul 10 - Don't be surprised if this season is A-Rod's last in pinstripes. According to The New York Daily News, Alex Rodriguez is growing tired of life in the Bronx.

"I don't think there's any question -- he's out of there," a baseball person in San Francisco for the All-Star Game, claiming to have knowledge of the third baseman's mind-set, told the newspaper. "He's telling people how fed up he is with the media in New York and everything that comes with playing there. Throw in the fact the Yankees are facing a major rebuilding job this winter and all of a sudden the one reason he wanted to be there no longer exists. He can find peace and a winning team in Anaheim."

Although Rodriguez has deftly avoided discussing the Nov. 10 opt-out clause in his contract -- as has his agent, Scott Boras -- many baseball officials believe the Angels, Cubs, Red Sox and even the White Sox will be in the bidding for him.

Unnamed sources. It must be true.

Apparently he's already going to make 32 mil in 2009 and 2010 and can also become a FA after 2009:

Even if his client doesn't go the opt-out route, Boras told the Post that there are existing stipulations in the current deal that all but guarantee Rodriguez would earn a minimum of $32 million in both the 2009 and 2010 seasons.

"The way the provision operates, he either gets that or he can become a free agent after any of those seasons again," Boras told the newspaper.
Boros also claims he won't negotiate during this season.ESPN
