Lets talk Calvin Johnson (1 Viewer)

There is lots of talk how great Calvin will be in Detroit for years to come and he should be a top 5 Wr in dynasty leagues.

Some compare this combo to Reggie Wayne and Harrison, but they do not have Peyton Manning.

So my question is - if Roy and Calvin share balls, also with Furrey and the backs - will Roy's numbers drop and Calvin's be a top ten WR?

Can the Lions produce two top ten WR's year in and out?

Something has to give - or does it?

Calvin has all the tools, mentally and physically, to be one of the best wr's of all-time from what I've seen of him in college but the fact remains he is still a rookie in a offense without an elite qb and alot of other options. For dynasty purposes I have no problem putting him in the top 10 range but in a redraft I doubt he'll crack the top 20.

I think there has been plenty of evidence over the years to support the idea that 2 WR on the same team can still be very productive fantasy weapons:

Wayne/Harrison

C. Johnson/Housh

Fitz/Boldin

Holt/Bruce

Moss/Carter

Only that it is not common. That should not come as any surprise though. It's not easy for NFL teams to assemble the components necessary for such success. You would have to have at least 1 stud WR, a WR 2 who more than likely would be good enough to be a WR1 on most NFL teams, a solid QB and the offensive scheme to allow it in the 1st place. It would probably help to have a D that is suspect so that the O feels more pressure to score, but I'm not sure that is supported statistically. Needless to say, I think the pieces are in place for both ROY and Calvin to be such WRs in the NFL. ROY we know is a stud. Martz we know is apt to such offensive scheme. Kitna is a solid QB. Really the only thing we have to wait on is if Calvin can fill the enormous shoes everyone expects him to.

Not sure how he will do in yardage but I would be surprised for him to get 10+ TDs. He should be a primary target in the end zone.

I think they both go as far as Kinta will take them, I also suspect Bell/Jones may improve the running game enough to take some yards away from the WR's

I think a lot of Calvin Johnson's success in the next 6 years (the contract he just signed) is going to depend on someone who isn't even on the team. (unless you think it's Stanton.....eek)

Kitna has this year and maybe next year realistically. That's Calvin's first two years as a pro.......I highly doubt those will be his most productive years as a professional. So, with that line of thinking established, who the Lions decide to bring in to throw the ball to this guy is important to his success.

Do the Lions go to the draft for a QB? If so.........Calvin's numbers aren't going to be great. They aren't going to bring in some rookie QB in 1 to 3 years and he'll start putting up huge numbers right off the bat as a QB.

I think the best recipe for success for Calvin's stats would be to find a free agent QB who's not over the hill and pay him the bucks. That's not easy to do obviously, because you have to outbid everyone else who goes after him.........but I think the Lions will be DESPERATE for a QB here in a year. I don't believe Stanton is the real deal and was a wasted 2nd round pick. He'll learn very little now his first year as he's been placed on the IR already.

So, in discussing how good Calvin is or is going to be.......part of the success or lack there of it will be who the Lions decide to lead their team after Kitna. Do they go to the draft or get someone like the Saints got in Drew Brees and can come in and play the game.

Stanton will be the QB. The bigger question may be who will be the offensive coordinator when Martz leaves for ..... Cleveland???
