Don't get me wrong, I want Redd to stay...I want them all to stay...but if they don't want to stay, let 'em go and good riddance. I'll feel a lot better about rooting for a team of guys who are loyal to PSU, win or lose, than guys who at the end of the day I feel are just trying to get to the NFL or there b/c of no other options, or are playing out this season to transfer next. If the relationships with the school/students/teammates mean nothing to you after playing there for a season or two, leave. I walked into Beaver Stadium as a fan and after that point, I was a Nittany Lion fan come better or worse.

God bless 'em. That's the kind of kid I want to root for...win or lose. There's not a PSU fan in Beaver Stadium who will boo these kids for losing this year. There's not a fan who won't cheer for them for electing to stay when given the opportunity to go elsewhere...I worry more about recruiting than anything else as those guys don't have the loyalty built up yet.

Hackenburg and Breneman are the keys. Dont know much about Hack, but Breneman is a really solid kid from a really solid family who really wants to play for BOB. Id be shocked if he leaves (unless of course everyone bails).

I definitely agree. I was worried losing Douglas was the start of a wave of de-commits...every day that goes by is one step in the right direction.

I think even in 2013-2014, the real damage will be from the recruiting impact. I think guys who are already there will have already drank enough of the "PSU coolaid" to want to stay...there are obvious exceptions. I think Rob Bolden is on the first bus out of town. He's been unhappy since BEFORE this.

Awesome. Zordich and Mauti look like such bad###es as well. Based on this and all the other little things, I seriously think less than 5 players transferring is becoming a reasonable thought. Recruits are another story.As for Redd, he seems to be the most likely of the bunch to leave, but you would have to think it would be a big character plus on his NFL draft stock if he stayed. At least I would look at it that way if I worked for an NFL team.

Agreed. Hard to believe any Jr or Soph that stays around would leave after this season for 1-2 years somewhere else, for the most part at least.

This spring, Penn State still seemed to be able to attract some of the nation’s top players. The recruits were fully aware of the problems that came last fall, but they were impressed with the new coaching staff and felt they could be a part of the rebuilding process.
Now, it seems they don’t know what to think. The shock of the NCAA’s penalties, which came down Monday, has some of the prospects reeling.
Adam Breneman, a tight end who is Penn State’s top-rated recruit (No. 27 overall) in the Sporting News Top 125, was one of those recruits. He has already turned into an unofficial spokesman for the class.
“I guess the word would be shocked,” Brenaman told Sporting News on Tuesday afternoon. “Nobody in our class expected sanctions to come down like this. None of us thought it would be this bad. Of course, there’s a little bit of anger. Everybody completely understands that what happened at Penn State was wrong and that kids got hurt, but at the same time it really bothers me that the NCAA hurt so many other kids by taking things away.
"They didn’t have to do what they did to get their point across.”
Breneman is from Camp Hill (Pa.) in the heart of Penn State fandom. He grew up a fan of the program and Joe Paterno, so the whole situation has been hard to deal with.
He said his bond with new coach Bill O’Brien is what has kept him on board.
“I feel bad for Coach O’Brien,” Breneman said. “I knew there would be some rough things ahead but never expected this to happen. He’s such an awesome guy and he’s the main reason we have been on board. Coach O’Brien has committed to our recruiting class that he’ll be there for the next four years at least.
"I asked him a while ago if he felt a lot of pressure replacing Joe Paterno, and he said because he had a special needs child, he didn’t feel pressure anymore. If anybody can do this, it’s definitely him.”
Penn State recruiting hasn't been harmed significantly by the Jerry Sandusky scandal, but the Nittany Lions aren't guaranteed of retaining top commits like Adam Breneman.Breneman said he is committed, but he does want to keep his eyes open to the way things play out.
Brendan Mahon, one of his fellow Penn State recruits and another SN125 player, told Sporting News that he’s in the same situation.
“At this point I am committed to Penn State and you can tell everyone that I love everything about Penn State and Coach O’Brien,” Mahon told Sporting News on Tuesday. “But I am going to keep my options open just in case anything drastic happens.”
Defensive end Garrett Sickels, one of the top players committed to Penn State, said Monday that his commitment is solid.
Ranked the No. 32 overall player in the 2013 class by Sporting News, the 6-foot-, 230-pounder from Red Bank Regional in Little Silver, N.J., talked to the Penn State staff Monday as well as some other commitments.
“All day I didn’t really talk to any reporters, didn’t really talk to any of my friends, my parents were at work, and they said, ‘Hey, you know what you have to do, it’s your decision.’ So I just weighed out the options and thought it out, and I don’t want to play for another staff,” Sickels told 247Sports.com. “All my friends, we’re the type of kids that say bowl games are bowl games, but there’s a great opportunity here that we can really grab, and that’s what we all decided to do, we stayed with it. This is our best shot.”
A four-star defensive end, Sickels is the No. 176 overall player with 247Sports.com.
“What it comes down to, I was looking at other options today, wondering what would happen or where I would go,” he added. “I was thinking, ‘What’s best for me?’ The best place for me is Penn State. I had options, Big 12, Pac-12—this is the place for me. This is why I committed in the first place.”

Silas Redd would be foolish not to go elsewhere imo, he needs to make himself as attractive of an NFL prospect as possible, and he'll be hard pressed to do that at Penn State this year. Having said that, given the amount of competition for carries he'd have at USC I don't think that'd be the best place for him either.

Unless he can find a team in the SEC that will let him start immediately, and isnt terrible and hurts his numbers, he'll be facing the best defensive competition he can in the B10 as well.

I dont believe any of these kids are leaving because of the impacts of the sanctions levied against PSU. Just a chance for a "re-do" on the recruiting process for players that are either buried on the depth chart or have significantly raised their stock since HS (Redd), without having to worry about any of the consequences. Other than Redd, none of these hurt the team too bad. PSU should push to have the scholorship reduction begin this year. We'll probably be near it anyway.

I'd have to disagree with you there...losing 8 - 10 players off of a team is bad no matter who they are because it eats away at your depth. I am a Wisconsin fan, and if we had 8 players transfer in a week, no matter who they were, it would weaken the team. Also, as with any football team there are going to injuries, these are 8 - 10 guys who are not going to be around to stave that off, and you essentially will be forced to play walk ons in some situations.Additionally, there is no way the penalties are being modified, so you might as well forget that. You guys have a tough road ahead of you, I don't wish any more ill will on your program, but man...you are going to see some tough times.

Losing Fortt will hurt the depth on defense - he was expected to see more time this year. Fera's loss could hurt depending on what kind of kicker they find to replace him. When he was out for the first three games last year the kicking game stunk out loud.

Talent's not there on offense, but this was the most imaginative gameplan I've seen in a long time from Penn St. Ohio U is just good. I hope these guys stick with O'brien, won't win more than 4-5 games this year or anytime in the next few but if they hang tough during this stretch they'll come out of it quick once the sanctions are lifted.'ffldrew said:
