Let's Talk Penn State Football (1 Viewer)

The players are starting to pick up the offense and feel comfortable in it. It's noticeable. They could be 4-1 if not for a horrible kicking day.

Big 10 ESPN Power Rankings:

6. Penn State (3-2, 1-0, last week: 9): The Big Ten's hottest team makes the biggest move of the week, rising three spots after another impressive win against Illinois. Linebacker Michael Mauti is leading a revived defense, while quarterback Matt McGloin continues to perform well in the new offense. You can't say enough about the job Bill O'Brien has done in his first season as Lions coach. Penn State faces its biggest test since the season opener this week against Northwestern before a challenging stretch with three of four on the road.

Slow first half. Hackenberg looked ok overall but was pretty late on a couple throws including the INT.

Ive been waiting for a decade for them to start off with a true freshman at QB and groom them as a 3-4 yr QB instead of all the middling upperclassmen (minus Robinson) theyve played for 1-2 years and then onto the next guy for 1-2 years. So, I'll take the bumps that go with starting Hackenberg this year.

Bad INT, but not unusual for a freshman QB to not read it.
Overall I thought he got better as the game went on though.

Certainly you dont want the INTs, but 22/31 for 278 (9.0 YPA) is a damn fine start for a true freshman, and I dont think Cuse are bad either.

I think that UCF QB Blake Bortles is the real deal. He made a bunch of great throws against Penn State and is extremely mobile for a tall, pro-style QB. It seems like he has a great combination of arm strength and accuracy. I read that some NFL scouts apparently like him more than AJ McCarron and Aaron Murray. I think we will be hearing a lot more about Bortles this season. As much as it hurts to lose to a small conference opponent at home, I don't think Penn State should get too down on themselves. Bortles played a hell of a game.

Rather get the loss out of the way now. They're not that good, but they could beat some good teams this year. Bortles is a good QB.

More than happy to take a few losses the next few years. Worst case scenario would be going 10-1 in a season like this. BOB bolts to the NFL and doesn't get to develop Hack fully. A tough home loss to pretty damn good QB is alright in my book.

His girlfriend is smoking hot too.

Lions fans won't feel so bad about losing to UCF at home after The Knights take down Javedon Clown and the Cocks this week. Bortles IS the real deal.

Was very glad and sort of surprised to hear this yesterday. NCAA clearly admitting they overstepped with the punishment. It would be sweet to be bowl eligible for Hackenberg's senior season.
Rumors are already floating around that the team will be allowed to attend a bowl for the 2014 season.
I would be very surprised if this did not happen. Likely won't be announced until after signing day (probably summer 2014).

Congrats on not covering for any child molesters for the past couple of years, here's your scholarships back

good job!

What are the odds that the NCAA ever restores JoePa's victories? Pretty low I think.
Who'd care?? Do people really believe they are "gone" This is as dumb as removing 'championships' as a punishment.
While I agree that removing championships and wins is a stupid punishment, not just for PSU, but for Ohio State, USC, whomever, there are a lot of ex PSU Football players (Franco Harris, most vocally) and alum who are really pushing for those wins to be reinstated. I'd say if you asked a lot of alum what the single biggest punishment was, they'd say forfeiting those wins.

My guess is that sanction is also the one that no amount of reparations will get the NCAA to overturn. If the NCAA said, "OK, we'll give them back," then they've basically said "our record book is arbitrary," even more loudly than they already said it when they took the wins in the first place. So dumb.

Utterly pathetic and sad, if true.

I think it was the dumbest, but I always think taking away wins/championships or putting asterisks are stupid. The games were played and won or lost.

Why??? I know it doesn't take away the memory or truly change the outcome, but if you were a player, wouldn't you be upset that all the games you played in were now considered losses, especially when you personally did nothing wrong? The scholarships eventually come back. The bowl eligibility eventually comes back. The forfeited losses don't.

I would see the bigger picture and understand what the "punishment" is actually about. This isn't about some stupid game. It's about child molestation. I didn't think the NCAA should be involved in any of PSU's problems around this, but it sickens me that players would focus on themselves and these games rather than the victims. In a situation like this, football games are insignificant. That they can't get away from their self centered view to see that sickens me.

It's just stupid. Normally there was some type of cheating involved when you abandon wins or championships, or have an asterisk in the record books, and it's stupid to do those things even then. This is a criminal matter that had nothing to do with players on the field. So it's even dumber really. Fine the hell out of them, take away bowl eligibility and scholarships etc. as punishment to the school if you want to. Vacating wins is always dumb, but here there isn't even a casual connection between what happened on the field and with this monster. Put the criminals in jail who performed the act, perjured themselves, or swept it under the rug. Personally I think that the $60M fine is the biggest deal and this means the least as everybody knows who won games, it's just the dumbest form of "punishment"

Don't disagree at all. That's why I don't understand why these players would care about wins and losses being on the books. In the grand scheme of things it's dumb.

Terrible. Everyone but Robinson was brutal. Playcalling was pretty bad too. Needed more power I with ZZ. Oh well. Hopefully a learning experience.

I wonder if the players still shower in the stall where Jerry was raping that kid, that would be a bit weird
Seriously? What a #### thing to say. No place or reason to piss on a great win for a program going through some tough times that are of no fault of the people presently in the power structure.

Well, O'Brien can eat a big bag of dirty Sandusky ####s. I thought he'd at least stick around for 4 years.

Hopefully we can land one of the "lesser" names that are being thrown around as going to Texas like Franklin, Shaw, etc.
