Let's Talk Penn State Football (2 Viewers)

You can definitely see the speed a lot of the young guys (Barkley, Polk, Reid) bring to the game.

Hack still seems lost, though it didn't matter Saturday.
Honesty, I think they'll get better after Hack is gone. That is not a knock against him, I just don't think he and Franklin's scheme mesh. Hear me out:

Hackenberg was recruited by O'Brien, a pro-style coach who ran a pro-style offense. Hackenberg was incredible in his freshman year in that system. Franklin comes along and he's a college coach from the SEC. He values speed. His style and Hackenberg's talents do not mix. I honestly don't think Franlin and Donovan know how to coach a kid with Hackenberg's skill set. I think its trying to fit a square peg in a round hole. Granted, coaching does not atone for the throws at the feet or over the heads of receivers.

I think it's a combination of coaching and poor play on Hackenberg's part. But, he's been put in a tough situation, having to play in a system completely different than the one he was promised. Its a tough situation and a lot of times, I feel bad for the kid. I think they (Hackenberg and Franklin/Penn State) will both be better off when he leaves. It's unfortunate.

So how exactly are you related to Hack? :P

I'm jockeying for a slice of his signing bonus.

Did we lose everyone to the yoga pants thread?

Not sure which is worse...sitting in the stands in Beaver Stadium each week watching the play on the field, or getting rained on while doing so.

4-1 with Indiana and the rest of the Big Ten schedule looming. Hoping for a better Homecoming showing next week than NW last year.

I was moving today, so only had my phone to glance at occasionally to check the score. I read a few articles online this morning.

It must have been ugly. Only 260 yards total offense? Maybe I should be glad I missed it.

It was a rather pedestrian affair. Army's triple option gave the defense some trouble, but PSU scored 10 points off turnovers which saved the Nittany Lion's bacon.

What are you guys expecting going into the 'Shoe this weekend?

More like 2013 (steamrolled) or 2014 (unexpectedly competitive)?

It's been almost 25 years since we've knocked off the #1 team in the country (11/7/90 vs. ND).

Is there enough magic left in the universe for a repeat?

Me personally? I'm expecting a 2013. I'm still not sold on the fact that the OL can keep Hack upright. I'll be happy if we make it out of there within 21 points of OSU and without an injury to Hack. I'm probably a little more pessimistic than most.

Hoping for 2014, expecting a lesser version of 2013 (around 21 points). I'll be watching Doctor Who for part of it.

I'm starting to change my tune with Hackenberg. A lot of the time he seems to be a fair to make mistakes. Sometimes you just have to throw the ball. 4th aND 2 inside the OSU 15, down by 14 points in the 4th quarter and he takes a sack.

You have to throw the ball. I don't care where you throw it, but throw it somewhere. He's done that a few times tonight and seemingly a lot in the past.

This program's ability to ruin top QB recruits is uncanny. I used to think it was Jay Paterno, but maybe it's something else. I don't get it. With a few exceptions, why do QBs continually regress in this system?

Jay was the problem for years. The footwork of every QB he coached was awful.

I'll be tailgating with the Penn State alumni association doods in Baltimore next weekend and then going to the game very drunk.

They should be able to beat Maryland...I would think.

Hackenberg might declare for the draft before the end of this game.
I heard all about this kid preseason and only saw snippets before tonight. Finally watched the bulk of the game last night and holy hell how was this kid proclaimed the next big QB? He cant throw, cannot move and is about as inaccurate as can be. He is just not good and looking at his stats from the year man did the scouts or experts have this one wrong.

so what's happening with Hack? Square peg in a round hole?
The coaching on the offensive side of the ball is pretty bad. I think with Hack the issues are in his head rather than his mechanics. His receivers are also pretty bad.

I keep wanting to give Hackenberg the benefit of the doubt after his freshman year and the success that he had.

But I think it's just bad. I think everything is bad. I think the coaching staff around him is bad. His oline is bad. His receivers are either young and inexperienced or bad. And I think that there are aspects of Hackenberg himself that are bad. I think he's beat up, I think he's tired of getting hit, and I think that's affecting him more than anything else. I think he's mentally checked out. It's going to be best for all involved when he leaves, and I don't mean that in any sort of bad way.

Let's talk about the positive....Barkley, Godwin, Nassib, Zettel n and the rest of the defensive line....Holy cow, how good are those guys??

On the first drive on third down Hack tries to throw to the outside into coverage. He had time and missed wide open in the middle of the field. Settling for a FG was huge for the tone of the game. I saw the big TD run and left the room. How bad was the holding call?

Hack had a good arm, but his decisions and timing need work still. He also cannot move at all basically.

Damn shame Winbush switched to Notrw Dame.

Are you guys going to fire Franklin? He seems in over his head.

I know there is an argument that he needs to get his guys into his 'system', but honestly I feel the best mode of operation for any coach is to tailor the system to players that are there. After all, we are talking about football, they are not out there trying to cure cancer or split an atom!

The holding call was legitimate.

I swear, this team gives me manic-depression.

I just read something that kind of put things into perspective: "Penn State is 6-2, with their only two losses coming against undefeated top-20 teams".

Hack shows flashes, but his mechanics are just bad. I think a good QB coach could turn him into something

ugly win

To their credit, they finally realized Maryland was selling out to stop the run and they could be beaten deep. Godwin gets better every game.

Godwin saved Hack repeatedly today. Hack does not look like he has the accuracy to play QB in the NFL.
agree right now. Thing is, he was more accurate his first two years. That tells me his mechanics have gotten bad and there's no one there to teach him.

For all you #NittanyNation #PennState fans, I'm the guy in the OU sweatshirt that started the "WE ARE" chants today at M&T. :)

Was at M&T yesterday.

Although the play was sloppy, it was an unexpectedly entertaining game. Sort of like the 2013 Michigan 4OT game.

Hope they consider playing future PSU-Maryland games there too.
