Let's Talk Penn State Football (2 Viewers)

Franklin has lost the fan base and seemingly the team. Was bood soundly yesterday when starting lineups were announced. Bood even more after the game. Situation increasingly untenable. Lots of smoke that change will be made by mid-week.

Two weeks ago, the team was one play from beating Oregon. This all collapsed quickly.

For Penn State Fans, who would you like to see next?
The “usual suspects” and names you’ll hear are Rhule (letterman), Cignetti (Pennsylvania roots), Golden (letterman), and Diaz (former DC). All have pros and cons. Coaching, player development, and the ability to recruit and retain at a high level in an NIL/portal world and compete for and win championships will be key. Mixed bag with each of them IMO.

Dark horse is Urban Meyer. He was all but signed, sealed, and delivered as Paterno’s immediate replacement before the NCAA brought the sanctions hammer down and scared him off and to tOSU. The man has a ton of baggage and character concerns, but he checks all those other boxes and is only 61 (younger than Cignetti). Will be interested if he is interested in a redemption arc to wash the stink of his Jacksonville experience away.

I'm not sure I can be on-board with that personally. I've always thought Meyer was dirty, and I don't think we need that at PSU at this point.

I know we're all focusing on all the bad about Franklin this week, but over the long-haul, he was immensely beneficial to a program that was coming out of some dark times when he was hired. He ran an ethical ship and helped restore some of the shine that was lost, and he pulled in some massive recruiting classes. His mindset and morals were exactly what PSU needed at the time - and he did help restore the program to being a perennially competitive team, even if they couldn't get over the hump.

I don't want to take a step back in that regard hiring a guy like Meyer.

I was a defender of Franklin up until now. This was the right move, despite the buyout $$. That Oregon game was set up perfectly for a big win (finally): they basically had a pre-season schedule, then a BYE week, then a home primetime White Out game -- and they blew it. The game plan was terrible, and then Allar threw another clutch-time career defining inexcusable INT. Going cross-country for UCLA was ripe for a slow start, but again they just looked terrible against an 0-4 team with coaches who never even called plays in-game before. Then you lose homecoming to another team you were favored by 3TDs over. After a pre-season #2 ranking with a HUGE number of returning players from last season, you have to blame coaching. And the complete inability to ever win big games was going to start to hurt recruiting.

I would hope for someone with PSU or PA ties that cares about Penn State tradition who views it as their top job and intends to stay as long as possible.

Really? #3 in the country 15 days ago.

And Playoff Semi Finals recently.

Things do move fast though.
Franklins record against top teams has been awful. He built good but not great teams and could not get the team ready to win big games year after year. For a big program like PSU, there has to be bigger aspirations than a winning record.

2-18 vs top 10 teams since he came to PSU (11.5 years).

I'm a big Josh Pate fan, and he was kind of bashing firing the guy.

But i agree with you. Penn State has a massive budget, they have NIL money, they don't have an SEC schedule, and they should have first crack at every high schooler in the Northeast.

Wouldn't be shocked if they take a shot at Cignetti, and really, he has to consider it. Amazing story at JMU and IU, but this is a job of a different level

Assuming Indiana doesn’t completely flame out, Cignetti should be Penn St bound in January. If I was Cignetti I’d go to UCLA but he seems like more of a Penn St guy.

UCLA?
I think the interim guys have been doing quite well
