Lidge out as closer, Wheeler in. (1 Viewer)

Surprised they'd do it so soon as there's no recovering Lidge now. I guess they know a lot more about where he is now mentally and they just don't see him bouncing back. Kills the last shreds of his trade value but a team like the White Sox or Yankees or maybe Baltimore that are desperate for bullpen arms might take a look.

Outside of overuse, bullpen arms are the least of the White Sox's concerns

Any team that thinks it's a contender needs more bullpen help unless you're the Twins. And overuse is probably the #1 bullpen problem teams have.

Thanks for the heads up. Just grabbed Wheeler in my 5x5 12 team roto league, and he should be a nice boost for me as far as saves go.

It about time! Lidge was horrible last season. I know he only had 6 blown saves but he was clearly a different pitcher than before Poo-Hole went 500' on him.

I was at the game yesterday. There were Cards fans with seats right behind the Astros bull pen. I was right to the side of it in RF. They were cheering "Bring in Lidge". At the time they were up 5-0. And Lidge comes in in the 8th for some time since he hasn't pitched since blowing the save on opening day. Lidge gives up 5 runs before being pulled!!!

Lidge would probably do well somewhere else. He has/had great stuff and likely needs a change ala David Carr.

New York? Mariano's looking for a long term extension at a high price tag. The Yankees don't really have a solid young arm they envision taking over his spot when he leaves at this point as far as I understand. They could always take a flier on him and see if what you said comes true.

Groundout to 1st. 2 up, 2 down.

They cut to a shot of Lidge earlier. He didn't look too happy, I wonder why, his team is winning.

In what freakin league was Wheeler available? He went a round or two after Lidge in my drafts. Wheeler should have been the #2 or 3 non-closing RP taken, up there with Zumaya and Rafael Soriano.

:lmao:12 teams 5x5 with only three bench spots including anybody that is hurt! NO DL unless you agree to keep him for next year. Keep 5 majors and three minors (bench of 6 minors who must be under certain ML thresholds to qualify) from year to year; the issue becomes if D. Lee gets hurt and you want him for next year you can put on your Dl where he stays for the rest of the season but would you do the same for Dotel? No likely.Start 9 pitchers, and 13 sticks. Basically there is not any room to carry squat. I speculated on Wheeler last night when I saw Lidge get lit up like a pinata'. I had a choice between letting go of Encarnacion(CIN), Dotel or Julio to do so. Yea, I waived Julio.FYI - Wheeler was only picked up in 31% of all Sportsline leagues headed into this week. Depending upon the scoring system, it is probably not that unusual he was available.

In my 12 man leaugue on ESPN he is still available. Stupid ####### ESPN has had technical problems and we haven't been able to pick up players since last week. :hot:

If Wheeler falters, Qualls would be in line to close. Long term, perhaps Fernando Nieve gets moved to the bullpen. His stuff is conducive to closing.

There are lots of league types out there. My league is only 9 teams, 3 RPs with only 3 bench spots so yeah, he was available.

That doesn't have disaster written all over it. If he's a headcase now, what would happen to him once he started getting the A-Rod treatment? :tfp:

Is there anything in fantasy beisbol more infuriating than having your close brought in to a game when he's got a 4 run lead?

I'd LOVE to see stats run on "Closer's brought in to pitch when there's no possibility of earning a save". Anecdotally, I'd say their ERAs are 11.00 and WHIP is 3.00 since saves started being kept as stats.

Wheels give up 1 run on his first 5 pitches....

Albert Pujols should have Brad Lidge's head mounted above his fireplace.
I think that screwed him up mentally, but I'm wondering if there's a physical component here, as well....
The people in Houston think he's tipping his pitches.
He was tipping his pitches last year. Not sure what his problem is this year. I know he struggled last season with runners on base cause he wouldn't pitch out of the stretch with a runner on. That's when he'd lose a lot of control and walk batters.

He pulled the same #### last week as well...............

How long do I hold onto Lidge waiting for him to be traded somewhere?
He has zero trade value right now. If they were going to do something with him, they should have done it in the offseason. I'd cut him loose.
Agree that the Astros have no leverage to trade him so I'm not sure they will. They're likely asking too much and other teams won't be offering enough. That being said, Lidge pitching elsewhere would be the best thing for him.In fantasy though, I would hold him if you are in a deep league. He should still have value. Maybe you could trade him instead of cutting him. Let someone else worry about what happens to him.

6 teams have contacted them since Sunday night to inquire about Lidge. I'm still trying to get my friend to tell me who and will certainly post it if he gets back to me.

FWIW, they were talking about Ldige on 610 in Philly. Eskin doesn't think the Phillies have what it takes to trade for him though.
