Lidge To Phillies In 5 Player Deal (1 Viewer)

Phillies acquire RHP Brad Lidge and infielder Eric Bruntlett from the Astros for outfielder Michael Bourn, RHP Geoff Geary and third baseman Mike Costanzo. We're not at all impressed with Ed Wade's first move as Houston's GM. Bourn could have a long career as a fair regular, but he's basically another Willy Taveras for the Astros. If Lidge's arrival in Philadelphia results in Brett Myers' return to the rotation, this could be a big winner for Pat Gillick. Geary is an average middle reliever and Costanzo's a long shot to have a career, so this basically boils down to Lidge for Bourn. Lidge is only under control for one more year, so it's not a huge slam dunk. Still, turning Myers back into a starter gives the Phillies a bigger rotation upgrade than they possibly could have picked up in free agency. Nov. 7

Fantastic move for the Phillies! Myers should be in the rotation. Just give Lidge the weekends off that they play the Cards.

ughhh, I don't like this

Wanted to see Myers stay as closer, but regardless I hate to see Bourn go

Another good move for Ed Wade tho

Does this mean that the Phils try to re-sign Rowand? Or does Dobbs see some spot OF duty? After Burrell-Victorino-Werth, there isn't much depth. Chris Roberson has had a couple cups of coffe and hasn't proven he can hit in the majors.

Good point. I am a little skeptical of this deal, given Lidge's recent history, though I'm not overly concerned about what we gave up.

I like the move to get a reliever and put Myers back in the rotation, though. There are many more available RP than SP.

Myers is better then any starter available. I'd rather have Myers/Lidge then Lohse/Fogg / Myers.Does Bourn start in Houston right away?

Sounds like they want him to "set the table"....though he'll be TEH SUCK if he can't get his OBP above .350.

I love this move for the Phils. They add the starter they needed (Myers) without expending any of their budget. Lidge only has 1 more year left, if he doesn't work out for them they can easily move Myers back to the pen. Personally, I'd like to see them go after a Linebrink or a Riske as well. This move also allows them to resign Rowand if they want.

Bourn reminds me of Wesley Snipe's Willie Mays Hayes in Major League. "He can run like Mays but he hits like ####." Doesn't really field all that good either.

How does it "allow" them to sign Rowand?

Because they have an internal budget. I believe they have about 20MM to spend (maybe more but I'll use 20MM to illustrate).Their priorties were to go out and get pitching, both starters and relievers. By trading for Lidge and moving Myers to the starting rotation they get the starter they were looking for for about 4MM (the difference between what Lidge will cost and what Geary and Bourn cost). That will leave them with about 16MM to resign JC Romero and Rowand. If they didn't do the trade they would have had to sign a FA which in all likelihood will cost in the neighborhood of 8-10MM (and that might get you a Kyle Loshe type pitcher). That would leave them with about 12MM to resign JC Romero and Rowand. Big difference. Especially considering that Rowand will get 10-12MM.

I like this move b/c I REALLY wanted Myers to move back to the roatation. Lidge was pitching better last year, hopefully has his mojo back

Plus, he only has to face Pujols about 6 times a year (if the situation calls for it) rather than 18 a year against the Cardinals.

Phils close to re-signing Romero

The Phillies bolstered their bullpen and rotation yesterday when they acquired Brad Lidge from the Houston Astros.

Lidge immediately became the Phillies' closer, which returned Brett Myers to the rotation.

But the Phillies aren't finished yet. The Phillies seem close to finalizing a multiyear contract with lefthanded relief pitcher J.C. Romero. There are indications that a deal could be announced as early as today.

Romero went 1-2 with a 1.24 ERA in 51 appearances last season for the Phillies, who signed him to a minor-league contract after the Boston Red Sox released him.

Is it a definite they are moving Myers back to the starting gig? I think Lidge would be better in middle relief with Myers as the closer.

They were saying he was starting on 610 FWIW. I have to think that Myers would be more valuable in the starting rotation.

He was pretty dominant in the pen, though. Obviously the Phils might not have the luxury to keep him as the closer, but if they can find a starter, they would be wise too.

Gillick already spoke with Myers, he's in the rotation.
