Liking a new team? (1 Viewer)

I am a Panthers fan now and I grew up a Cowboys fan. I was die-hard and watched them all the time, but when all the core of Aikman, Smith, Irvin, Novacek, Moose, etc. started retiring or moving on I lost interest as that was the same time that Jerry Jones pushed out Jimmy and decided to put his stamp on the team. I can't stand Jerry and there were no players I actually liked and now that I have been in Charlotte for 9 years, I am a fan. I honestly don't really care how the Cowboys do. I just like the players on the Panthers more and have met/know ex-Panthers and my family is fans. Well, all but one who is somehow a Boston fan (loves the Pats and Brady even before this past SB). I don't know how that happened, but it's his thing.

Grew up a Phillies fan. In college, I started working for the Baltimore Orioles. I hated the Orioles, but being able to work in baseball was too cool to pass up. I started learning the players and got free tickets to games. Eventually, the began to grow on me. Now I'm a diehard Orioles fan and hate the Phillies.

I've been an Indians fan since 1968 and have lived in 5 different states...never even thought about switching teams. I will watch the O's and Nats if the Tribe is on the left coast/off/delayed, but that's as far as it goes.

I can understand why you now like the Orioles but why did you start hating the Phillies? It's not as if they're even rivals to the Orioles.

Hate may not be the right word, and it wasn't really the Phillies specifically. Philly fans just started grating on me. I actually dislike all Philly sports teams now.

Ahh ok well as an outsider living in Philly, I can't say I blame you.

it puts you in the company of curlynight so hey just sort of let that guide you brohan take that to the bank

Heresy to me, but root for who you want to root for, I wouldn't judge anyone else's choice of a team. I've always been a "stick with the teams you grew up with" fan. Good and the bad. I grew up in the Philadelphia area, so I have never experienced a Super Bowl, one WS, no Stanley Cups, and no NBA titles in my lifetime. I still root for the teams I grew up with, and wouldn't consider switching. I've seen some bad teams so far in my life, makes it all the better when they win like the Phils in 08 after all those dreadful 90s and early 2000s teams. If the Birds ever get a SB, I'm about 100% positive I'll be out of work for a week and hammered the whole time.
Its not so much you're going to the parade if the other team wins. Its just something to keep it interesting when our teams are awful. Which is a lot.

Browns because there were no Bengals until I was in 5th grade. Bengals are number 2 though.

Cincinnati Reds in baseball - grew up listening to almost every game. Miss those late summer nights.

I wouldn't root for the Islanders if they played in my living room. F that.

I'm a Dolphin fan living in NY. I've always liked the Giants a bit and have followed them more closely the last 10 years or so as my wife has become a big fan.

I still don't care that much if they lose though.

Only team I've added since elementary school is the Nats, a team I now have season tickets to. Since I knew I would eventually move to DC, I started following them as my NL team as soon as they moved from Montreal. When they play the Tigers (doesn't happen often), I'm at the stadium in my Tigers gear. I don't like any other team in this area, and hate the Caps, Orioles, and Redskins.

Go rot.

grew up a giants fan as a child mostly because of my father. Switched to the redskins in 87 after they won the superbowl. Been a skins fan ever since. :wall:

Not sure what I'm going to do when the Raiders move from Oakland to San Diego and the A's as well if they move from the Bay Area.

Will be loyal to the Seahawks forever. Same with U of Michigan football. Because of that, have had the Patriots as my #2 since Brady took over as starting QB, but that will change when he leaves.

NBA, I follow much less closely. My favorite team was Atlanta when Dominique was there, then became whatever team Chris Webber played for at the time (Warriors/Bullets/Kings). Now, in a pinch, I'd say I root for Cleveland because of LeBron and the Warriors cause of Curry but those allegiances are very fluid.

Baseball, insomuch as I root for anyone, I root for the Dodgers out of habit but can't name any active players.

Hockey, I root for the Canadian teams just cause Canada cares so much more about the NHL than most Americans, myself included.

I was like 12 or 13 when the Titans moved to Nashville. Before that we didn't have an NFL team so I became a fan of my dad's favorite team, the 49ers. I still claim the 49ers as my favorite team, and follow them a bit too closely. But it's hard to not cheer for the local team. I go to at least one Niners game a season (usually STL as it's most often the closest road game) and at least 4-5 Titans home games. So now I just have a 1a and 1b and I do hope my sons become Titans fans.

We can't be iFriends anymore.

I know I'll be in the minority on this, but here's an idea:

Why not leave the tribalism aside and just enjoy the games?

I saw the episode. He dropped the ball there too.
