Lions in search of a running back. (1 Viewer)

CBS Sports' Jason LaCanfora reports Lions GM Martin Mayhew has been calling other teams in search of a running back.

This report suggests not only that the organization is aiming higher than free agent Ryan Grant, but also that Kevin Smith's ankle injury could end up leaving his status up in the air for the season opener. Saints power back Chris Ivory makes a lot of sense; he's fourth on the depth chart, and undrafted rookie Travaris Cadet has impressed in preseason action.

It would be kinda of funny if the Packers cut Starks and Detriot picked him up. (It probably won't happen since they need a healthy back that can play now.)

Ivory seems one-dimensional in terms of being a straight-ahead runner with little receiving ability. Surprised that he would be a fit there.

Helu/Royster have yet to play bc of injuries. Why not MJD? Could you imagine that offense with him? Lions are in win-now mode and this could put them in the driver's seat in that division.

Not sure I'm seeing how Chris Ivory is "aiming higher."
I've always liked him. He runs damn hard. But he's had pass pro/fumbling/injury issues in the past.
Looks like a total bad ### on a highlight reel. But can't really scrape himself any higher than #4 in a decidedly mediocre stable of backs in N.O., and is pretty much regarded by that organization as trash to be left by the curb at this point.

I was just thinkg out loud as to who has RB depth and would part with one of them? Id rather the Leo's take Pierre thomas than Ivory, but Pierre has good value to that team.MJD would come at a huge cost, like Fairly and a first or something, then you have to pay him, which the lions cannot they are up against the cap

I think they should look into Anthony Dixon from SF, as the 49ers are down to ge and Rock Cartwright for a roster spot. Cartwright is pretty good on special teams, not sure if Dixon is. If he's not, he could be expendable.

washington isn't trading it's starting rb
between them two, hightower and the kid getting all the action in pre-season they have depth to trade one, considering the two teams already made a deal for a CB, maybe they are talking about a RB, but Shanny likes a big stable

tough to think of who would constitute a real upgrade that they could afford then. Ivory or DJ Ware from the Giants might be their best bet. Carolina is not going to trade either of their backs, and Tolbert wants to play in the South so he won't play for Detroit.Maybe Atlanta would part with Turner? Doubtful there. KC likely does not have enough confidence in Charles to trade Hillis or vice versa.Probably some journeyman who gets cut, like Jackie Battle or something like that.

Carter has never really shown that he is a starting back, has been injured, and is fourth on the DC on his current team.

Slaton is interesting. Reggie Bush is even more interesting. Bush in Detroit could be downright scary.

Lions will trade for Felix Jones. The Lions are never dissuaded from acquiring running backs with questionable durabilty.

I will take Maurice Clarett at this point.

Getting a little concerned about Mayhews decisons. First of he did not cover his bases in the secondary nor at RB. With Best a huge question mark and Mickey LeShoure coming off a torn achilles, and Kevins Smith being injury prone this should have been addressed long before Septmeber.

Mo-jo is the first to come to mind but I doubt he's going anywhere.Wasn't there some chatter about Reggie Bush to Pittsburgh from the Irsay twitter-trade flap? And IIRC their was some rumors that the Cowboys dangled Felix Jones around draft time.I'm not sure how high the Lions are aiming or what sort of back they are looking for but the Browns have a lil-bit of depth so its possible that either Monterio Hardesty or Brandon Jackson could become available depending on what the Lions have to offer, maybe some sort of player-for-player deal could work.

I think Ivory is actually a great fit, nobody really know's if he can catch because the Saints already have 2 great receiving RB's in Sproles and Thomas, Ivory has never been given the chance. But he is definitely a 1st and 2nd down power back and as another poster stated he runs damn hard and has pretty good speed.

The guys that I think fit the type of role they had in mind for Best are Moreno, Taiwan Jones, and Felix.

would LOVE to see Taiwan Jone's speed on the turf..

Trading history with those three teams? Not sure but someone mentioned a Lions/broncos trade fairly recently (last few years).

Patriots love to trade for picks. Maybe Vereen.

Most expendable of the bunch: Moreno, no doubt.

I think MJD would be a nightmare. Would cost a ton and probably hurt Calvin's value (I mean, you gotta run some to justify the price of a MJD...you don't bring him in to give him 10-12 a game).

Whats their cap room?

Burn it, grab MJD.
Pretty sure they are in one of the worst cap situations in the league. They'd have to cut a TON to make room for MJD.
Damn, idk what the Lions would do with an elite RB, but I would be willing to put some money on it lol.

Love this idea.
As much as I dont like him, I think we need the depth
