Lions sign FA OG Leonard Davis.& Kevin Smith (1 Viewer)

ORIGINAL STORY

Lions Reportedly Work Out RB Kevin Smith, OG Leonard Davis

by Brian Packey

Yes, former Lions running back Kevin Smith and the three-time Pro Bowler offensive guard Leonard Davis, according to Scout.com.

As a rookie, the third-round pick Smith ran for nearly 1,000 yards and eight touchdowns, but injuries prevented him from building upon it. Smith actually looked good at times during his limited action last season, but the Lions obviously had other plans (Leshoure for instance). Smith did a nice job not burning bridges when the Lions didn't tender an offer and, assuming he's been working hard and staying hungry, could help him wind up back with the "big blue." The Lions continuing to work out running backs does make me wonder about the status of Jahvid Best, though.

As for Davis, he's a former first-round pick, a 6-foot-6, 355-pound mauling blocker, who started every game his last five seasons. It's no secret that the Lions need OL help wherever they can get it, so Davis could come aboard and make an immediate impact.

It'll be interesting to see if this picks up any steam and the Lions opt to bring either aboard.

Leonard is already onboard.....Detroit News reported this earlier. Burleson restructured his contract to make room. I am guessing that he will get about $1 million for the rest of the season. Not sure how the OL is going to look, but I assume some changes will be made at OT as a result of this.

the OT's were the biggest problem on that OL not the interior(as much) both Backus and Cherilus are horrible.

True, but Davis could play guard and we could move a guard to tackle. Right now Davis is slotted as a backup guard, but there is some flexibility in where lineman can play. I believe Davis has played some tackle, but he was disappointing.

True -- this was when Davis played at AZ. But I wouldn't put too much faith in how AZ rated him, because they also let KVB walk when he was clearly their best DL-men.

found this list of all 24 players the lions worked out during the bye week. Thought it'd be more interesting than another thread on one players performance from last nights game.

The Detroit Lions have signed guard Leonard Davis, according to theRep1Sports.

Here is the tweet by Rep1Sports:

"REP 1 client and 3-time Pro Bowl offensive guard Leonard Davis is joining the Detroit Lions."

Davis, 33, played six seasons with the Cardinals and four with the Cowboys. He started every game from 2006 through 2010, but was not on a team this season. Davis has appeared and started in 155 games.

Previously, Davis was a former University of Texas standout and first-round selection (second overall) by the Arizona Cardinals in 2001.

The signing of Davis wraps up a busy week at Allen Park.

While players were enjoying a bye week, Detroit had 24 players workout last week, according toProFootballTalk.com.

The report said Detroit worked out receiver Antwaan Randle El, receivers Sam Aiken, Aaron Love, Charly Martin, and Terrence Toliver, quarterback Brian Brohm, running backs Aaron Brown, Lonyae Miller, Wynel Seldon, and Kevin Smith, defensive tackles Tony Brown and Jovan Haye, guards Garrett Chisolm and Leonard Davis, defensive end Chauncey Davis, tight ends Ryan Goleski and Jonathan Stupar, linebackers Nic Harris and Lance Laury, long snapper Jake Ingram, punter Jeremy Kapinos, defensive backs Robert McClain and Kevin Payne, and center Chris Morris.

So far, Davis is the only player signed from last week's workouts.

Davis is a terrible tackle. AZ fans were clamoring for him to be moved to guard in AZ, but it never happened. He goes to Dallas, gets moved to guard and becomes a pro bowler.AZ let KVB go after a couple of injury plagued seasons and the strong showing of Bertrand Berry. Plus, I'm sure he wanted to reunite with Dave McGinnis, the guy who gave him a shot.
